Jaguar. The jaguar (Panthera onca) is a large member of the cat family native to South and Central America. ... The jaguar's habitat ranges from the rain forests of South and Central America to more open country in Mexico, but they are rarely seen in mountainous regions including in Costa Rica. They can grow up to 2 m. They are very rare in Costa Rica and their numbers continue to decline drastically.

The jaguar has featured prominently in the mythology of numerous indigenous peoples of the Americas, including those of the Maya and Aztec civilizations.

It is threatened by habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, poaching for trade with its body parts and killings in human–wildlife conflict situations, particularly with ranchers.Priority areas for jaguar conservation comprise 51 Jaguar Conservation Units (JCUs), defined as large areas inhabited by at least 50 breeding jaguars.

JAGUAR HABITAT

It inhabits a variety of forested and open terrains, but its preferred habitat is tropical and subtropical moist broad-leaf forest, wetlands and wooded regions. The jaguar is adept at swimming and is largely a solitary, opportunistic, stalk-and-ambush apex predator that is not preyed upon. As a keystone species, it plays an important role in stabilizing ecosystems and regulating prey populations.

The jaguar is a compact and well-muscled animal. It is the largest cat native to the Americas and the third largest in the world, exceeded in size only by the tiger and the lion.Jaguars have the most powerful jaws of all the big cats

 Panthera's Jaguar Corridor Initiati

SYSTEMA NATURAE

Panther's Jaguar Corridor Initiative aims to connect 90 distinct jaguar populations across the Americas. It stems from an unexpected discovery. For 60 years, biologists had thought there were eight distinct subspecies of jaguar, including the Peruvian jaguar, Central American jaguar and Goldman’s jaguar. But when the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity in Frederick, Maryland, part of the National Institutes of Health, analyzed jaguar DNA from blood and tissue samples collected throughout the Americas, researchers determined that no jaguar group had split off into a true subspecies. From Mexico’s deserts to the dry Pampas of northern Argentina, jaguars had been breeding with each other, wandering great distances to do so, even swimming across the Panama Canal.  https://www.panthera.org/initiative/jaguar-corridor-initiative >>>

Melanistic jaguars are informally known as black panthers

Melanistic jaguars are informally known as black panthers. The black morph is less common than the spotted one. Black jaguars have been documented in Central America and the above image is from Panama.  Best estimates indicate only 600 black jaguars exist in the wild today

🇨🇴 LOST CITY, COLOMBIA (CIUDAD PERDIDA)

OST CITY, COLOMBIA (CIUDAD PERDIDA)

Hidden deep in the jungle of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains in Colombia sits Ciudad Perdida, the "Lost City." Built by the Tairona people more than 1,000 years ago, the archaeological site only became an attraction after it was uncovered in the 1970s.

Los Sepúlveda was a small family of looters in Colombia; their story leads to the beginning of one of the greatest archaeological discoveries in modern times. The family went hunting in the forests of Colombia when they shot down a wild turkey. Upon retrieving the turkey, they noticed it had fallen on a piece of an exposed staircase. This staircase would lead them to find La Ciudad Perdida. For years after its discovery by the looters, “Treasures from the site, including gold figures and ceramics, soon began to appear on the black market”.

Although La Ciudad Perdida is one of the most impressive sites, it's not alone, only about 30-40% of the sites in the Sierra Nevada region have actually been explored. Thanks to recent widespread lidar access, more and more of these sites are being discovered, and the search for new lost cities has just begun

Ciudad Perdida consists of a series of 169 terraces carved

Ciudad Perdida consists of a series of 169 terraces carved into the mountainside, a net of tiled roads and several small circular plazas.

Ciudad Perdida was probably the region's political and manufacturing center on the Buritaca River and may have housed 2,000–8,000 people.

Named Teyuna by the Tairona but dubbed Ciudad Perdida upon rediscovery, the ancient wonder is perched on hillsides and tucked into a dense rainforest.

Dressed in all white, a color the Wiwa revere as holy.

The Wiwa people are descendants of the Tairona who have been left undisturbed for centuries. They have a deep spiritual connection with the land - have stated that they visited the site regularly before it was widely reported, but had kept quiet about it. They call the city Teyuna and believe it was the heart of a network of villages inhabited by their forebears, the Tairona

The importance of the Poporo (Danburro)

When the coca leaf is chewed by itself, however, not all of its ingredients are released. The adults, therefore, always carry another very important and sacred object: the Poporo (also called a Danburro)

oporo (also called a Danburro)

This device made from a gourd that holds powdered lime from seashells, which when mixed with the coca leaves creates a mild stimulant effect.

In the Wiwa community, a boy receives his poporo as a rite of passage into manhood.

MACAWS SQUAWK

Macaws are king-sized members of the parrot family. Their large, strong, curved beaks are designed to crush nuts and seeds. Their strong, agile toes are used like hands to grasp things. Loud, screeching and squawking voices help make their presence known in dense rainforests.

Macaws usually live in pairs, and after the nesting season, in family groups. When adult macaws choose mates, they usually stay together until one of them dies. This close relationship is called a pair bond. The pair reinforces its bond by preening each other's feathers, sharing food, and roosting together.

Macaws are king-sized members of the parrot family

Macaws are intelligent and curious birds that like to explore and keep busy. They are very aware of their surroundings, which is necessary to keep watch for predators.  Macaws have been known to use items as tools, and they like to play with interesting objects they find. They exam the objects from different angles, moving them with their feet, testing them with their tongue, and tossing them around.  Most macaws like to take baths, and they play in the water as they splash around.

🇵🇦 QUICK TIP ON MAKING CALLS IN PANAMA WHATSAPP RULES !

Info for everyone coming to or in Panama. If you are calling a business or person in Panama, you will sometimes see a 7 digit number but more often than not you will be calling an 8 digit number. Not to worry. As it was explained to me, usally the 7 digit number is a land line, and the 8 digit number is a cell phone. So if you see a listed number that is only 7 digits in Panama not to worry, its not a mistake.

May i add: ( of course ! Outventure)

..And mobile numbers start with a 6.

Therefore you also can only whatsapp with numbers starting with a 6.

Whatsapp is very much preferred here also for businesses; in contrast to email to which you usually never get any response.

FIRST PANAMA POSSE VESSEL ENTERING CUBAN WATERS

Madawaska's entry into the Speed Gonzalez Award

FIRST PANAMA POSSE VESSEL

We’ll share what we have learned and our experience here, for those interested in coming to Cuba. We left the San Blas after a cold front in the Gulf of Mexico and northern Caribbean Sea had dissipated. This was the window we were looking for. We had 2 days of “upwind” sailing. (We are a catamaran, so 60 degrees) - after that it was a sleigh ride all the way. 740nm and didn’t turn the engine on once. Averaged 7knots, top speed 13knots.

We arrived in Cayo Largo at sunset and dropped the hook in the outside anchorage for the night. In the morning we proceeded to the marina, where the most amazing manager Pierri greeted us.

We had already emailed him prior to our arrival. Always best to do so.

We arrived with a negative covid test from Panama, Bocas. We had a test here upon arrival - at a cost of $30.00 pp.

within 1 hour the negative result allowed for check in procedures to begin.

The official arrived with The manager in attendance to assist with translation.

We got our clearance, visas and the next day our cruising permit.

All went very smoothly.

There Are No, and I mean NO provisions available. Well except rum and wine.

The country is truly in dire straits.

Covid numbers in Havana are very high- and the country is pretty much locked down. Nothing is open.

Here on Cayo Largo all the hotels are, restaurants and closed, and have been for over a year. . One tiki bar is open for the workers on the island.

Other cruisers told us Cienfuegos is equally as desolate. Nothing on the shelves in the shops.

No eggs, no meat, no veggies.

I can’t emphasize this enough.

American dollars are still the preferred currency for tips. Don’t believe anything that tells you otherwise.

Many of the places one would cruise to in the south shore are closed to tourists and cruisers, such as Isla de Juventud.

Finally cell service is quite expensive here.

We will monitor this chat line for any questions.

We’re off to explore some of the uninhabited cays and anchorages that are on route to Marina Hemingway.

Happy sailing everyone.

ciudad peredia lost city

🇨🇴 LOST CITY CIUDAD PERDIDA

Fortifications of Cartagena 🇨🇴 COLOMBIA

🇨🇴  Castillo San Felipe de Barajas & Fortifications of Cartagena,  Colombia

San Felipe de Barajas Castle

The Castillo San Felipe de Barajas  is the largest fortification and the crowning glory of the Spanish Empire’s defensive network  in the city of Cartagena Colombia. The castle is located on the Hill of San Lázaro in a strategic location, dominating approaches to the city by land or sea. It was built by the Spanish starting in 1536 during the colonial era.
San Felipe de Barajas Castle
It was originally known as the Castillo de San Lázaro, It was expanded in 1657.

San Felipe de Barajas Castle
The fortification consists of a series of walls, wide at the base and narrow toward the parapet, forming a formidable pattern of bunkers. The batteries and parapets protect one another, so making it practically impossible to take a battery without taking the whole defense system.
The castle is striking for its grand entrance and its complex maze of tunnels.
San Felipe de Barajas Castle
It is organized into 8 fortifications to defensively to protect against pirate and foreign power attacks.

Key features include the triangular Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, surrounded by these batteries
de Santa Barbara,
de San Carlos y Los Apostles,
Del Hornabeque
de la Cruz
de la Redencion
de San Lazaro

It is the most formidable defensive complex of Spanish military architecture. It is 41 meters (135 ft.) above sea level

San Felipe de Barajas Castle
The San Lazaro battery's terreplein included aljibes, while channels and breakwaters dealt with rainwater. The main underground gallery runs along the perimeter of the complex at sea level. Chambers within it could be exploded preventing the advance of overhead attackers.[4]

Starting out with just eight cannons, and a small garrison of 20 soldiers and four gunners, the castle was continuously expanded. It was given further repairs and improvements is it was often in need of repairs due to the unfortunate habit Cartagena had for attracting pirate raids.

San Felipe de Barajas Castle

The castle first fell to an assault in 1697 by the French privateer Sir Bernard Desjean, Barón de Pointis and Jean Baptiste Ducasse, during the War of the Grand Alliance, a nine-year conflict fought between Louis XIV of France and a European coalition which included the Spanish Empire. Sotomayor’s subsequent repairs included strengthening the defensive capabilities of the fortress, with the addition of extra fortifications and gun turrets.

Diquís Delta Precolumbian Chiefdom settlements 🇨🇷 COSTA RICA

Diquís Delta Precolumbian Chiefdom settlements 🇨🇷 COSTA RICA

Located in the Diquís Delta in southern Costa Rica these Chiefdom settlements  illustrate a collection of unique stone spheres  of the Precolumbian period. The four sites represent different settlement structures of chiefdom societies (500-1500 CE) containing artificial mounds, paved areas and burial sites. Diquís stone spheres, which are rare in their perfection of large-sized (up to 2.57m diameter) spherical structures .

Diquís Delta

Stone Spheres of the Diquís illustrate the physical evidence of the complex political, social and productive structures of the Precolumbian hierarchical societies. The chiefdoms which inhabited the Diquís Delta created hierarchical settlements expressing the division of different levels of power centers,

Archaeological Investigations in Sites with Stone Spheres, Delta del Diquís"

The four property components contribute specific elements which allow for the understanding of the chiefdom settlement structures. Finca 6 is the only site retaining stone spheres in linear arrangements, Batambal is the only chiefdom settlement visible from a far distance, El Silencio contains the largest single stone sphere ever found, and Grijalba-2 site is unique for its use of limestone and its distinctive characteristics as a subordinate centre, as opposed to the Finca 6 site, which was likely a principal center.

Archaeological sites with sets of stone spheres have been affected for decades and individual spheres have been removed, altered or destroyed causing a great loss of the Costa Rican cultural heritage. For many years, archaeological investigations were scarce, but since the early 1990s, investigations began to progressively fill information gaps.

Diquis Stone Spheres

They appear to have been made by hammering natural boulders with other rocks, then polishing with sand. The degree of finishing and precision of working varies considerably. The gabbro came from sites in the hills, several kilometers away from where the finished spheres are found, though some unfinished spheres remain in the hills. They are used for decoration.

Since 2005, the National Museum of Costa Rica has developed the project "Archaeological Investigations in Sites with Stone Spheres, Delta del Diquís" aimed at studying the pre-Columbian occupation of the delta, focusing particularly on archaeological sites with the presence of stone spheres. At the same time trying to contribute to the discussion of various issues of regional relevance such as the emergence of rank societies and their particularities, in light of local developments proposed from the genetics and linguistics of current indigenous groups.

Diquís Delta

The regional and medium-term focus of this study has allowed a growing accumulation of information on different periods of occupation and establish the great potential of knowledge despite decades of agricultural work. The activities have combined inspection, evaluation and partial excavation of various settlements.

Diquis Stones COsta Rica

The spheres were discovered in the 1930s as the United Fruit Company was clearing the jungle for banana plantations.[4] Workmen pushed them aside with bulldozers and heavy equipment, damaging some spheres. Additionally, inspired by stories of hidden gold, workmen began to drill holes into the spheres and blow them open with sticks of dynamite. Several of the spheres were destroyed before authorities intervened. Some of the dynamited spheres have been reassembled and are currently on display at the National Museum of Costa Rica in San José. The collection at the National Museum of Costa Rica is made up of six of the spheres.  A lot of the spheres also ended up as lawn decorations for many Tico citizens

Precolumbian Chiefdom Settlements with  of the Diquís Stone Spheres  VIA YACHT MAP

All the information also served as the basis for the documentation of the candidacy file of the Finca 6, Batambal, Grijalba-2 and El Silencio sites as world heritage sites before UNESCO, which focused on their relevance as representatives of pre-Columbian chiefdom settlements with spheres stone from the Diquís and in general from the societies that occupied the tropical forest areas of southern Central America. The candidacy was approved in June 2014 and now, together with research at the regional level, work is being done on the conservation and management of these sites.

Tikal at Sunrise

Tikal is the ruin of an ancient city which is located submerged in the northern rainforests in the = Petén Basin in Guatemala. It is one of the largest archeological sites and urban centers of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tikal was the capital of a conquest state that became one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Maya. monumental Architecture at the site dates back as far as the 400 BC, Tikal's. Between 00 to 900 the city dominated much of the Maya region politically, economically, and militaril and traded throughout Mesoamerica as far north as Teotihuacan in current day Mexico.

HAWAII IS IN GOOD NAUTICAL

 HAWAII IS IN GOOD NAUTICAL

About the design of the hawaii flag

About the design of the Hawai'i State Flag

In 1794 when King Kamehameha I. received a gift of a British flag (a Union Jack) from British Captain George Vancouver. Kamehameha and Vancouver had become friends, and King Kamehameha wanted assurance that Hawaii would be under British protection.

By 1816, a unique Hawaiian flag had been created, though its precise origins are not known. It is believed that King Kamehameha I had some help from various people in creating this Hawaiian flag.

Alexander Adams is thought to be the person who first placed the Union Jack at the upper left corner of the flag. Adams first came to the Hawaiian Islands in 1810 aboard the ship Albatross and was soon placed in charge of several ships owned by Kamehameha.

The Hawaiian flag’s eight horizontal stripes are said to represent the eight main Hawaiian Islands. The flag’s red stripes are said to symbolize Hawaii gods, while the white represents truth, and the blue signifies the ocean.

The Hawaiian flag originally represented the Kingdom of Hawaii. After the overthrow of the monarchy the flag came to represent the Republic and then the Territory of Hawaii. Eventually it represented the State of Hawaii. There was originally a ninth stripe, but after statehood it was reduced to just eight.

We did a little video post showing how we had a poorly set anchor in bad holding vs what it looked like when we moved a few hundred feet over to find better holding. We thought these illustrated the importance of diving the anchor whenever possible and to just move the boat for peace of mind.

The anchor in the first shot is in what, according to Stephen Pavkidis guide books, the locals call "slate" hard, crusty, scoured sand that is difficult to get an anchor to set in.

The 2nd shot is after we pulled that anchor up and moved a few hundred feet to the east. That anchor isn't going anywhere on a 8:1 scope.
