3) Welcome to the Panama Posse
Winds of the World - Dan & Fernando currently in
Manzanillo

4) VOLANTE  III
is still waiting in Huatulco for a weather window to cross the
Tehuantepec. I was hoping Thursday would be the day but that
window closed. Fred Again arrived last night so that makes four
Panama Posse boats waiting to do the crossing. I was talking
with one of the long term boats here in the marina and their
weather window going north ended early. They had 15 foot 6 sec
seas. The sea state was so bad they lost their engine and had to
be rescued by the Mexican Navy.

5) RESPITE
Question for all of you further south of Mexico. Are there any
specific things we should stock up on before leaving? Are things
pretty available and reasonably price in El Salvador?
We may be leaving soon! Autopilot is installed and we are doing
a sea trial today. Hope to see you soon

(answer - Tequila is much more expensive - think at least double
)

Respite and Dads Dream are leaving Chiapas this morning planning

6) JULIA MAX - Cost Rica

Julia Max, Marina Papagayos Costa Rica. We could not check into
the country here unless we paid $580 for an agent and waited 48
hours. So we took a panga into Playas del Coco and checked in
along with Crossroads who shared the taxi into the airport. Took
5 hours due to waiting at Liberia and with Port Captain and
Immigration. Misunderstandings with the National Zarpe led us to
believe we had to detail every stop along our way sourth. That
is NOT the case. Dan, the Harbormaster at Papagayos Marina will e-mail
the port captain in Playas del Coco with a national zarpe from
here to Golfito and ALL PORTS IN BETWEEN. This will make your
cruising much easier. You still have to check in with the port
captains along the way, but no worries about going ashore
wherever it looks enticing or you want to anchor for the
night.
Marina Papagos has many slips available with special for Posse
participants, fuel @4.75/gal, electricity, potable water on
the dock, trash, laundry, swimming pool, restaurant, marine
store and a concierge for car rental and excursions. We took 2
excursions from the nature center in the peninsula resort
attached to the marina.
This is a 5 star+ resort and community. Dan, the Operations
Manager, from Florida, will take you on a property tour to see
the lovely environment with all the amenities available to you
for a price.

We have rented a car and are presently on a personal tour of
the national parks in the north country. No guide yet.

7) CARINTHIA - Nicaragua -  3 day Land trip to Leon -
Managua - GRANADA

4 hour drive to Lake Nicaragua via Leon and Managua ( GREAT
PROVISIONING ) to the fabled city and Unesco world heritage site
of GRANADA.
Absolutely "must see" and lots of global explorers and expats in
town - we stayed at a local condo Hotel Xalteva and walked
around all day - Stunning

Multiple Spanish
colonial landmarks that have survived repeated pirate invasions.

The city’s main plaza, Central Park, is dominated by the
colorful, neoclassical facade of the
Cathedral of Granada, originally dating to 1583.  All of this of
course set to a Sandinista backdrop.

Heading to San Juan del Sur Nicaragua on Tue/Wed.
The Marina owner and former cruiser Robert at Marina Puesta del
Sol is working on making cruising in Nicaragua easier.
Stay tuned for updates - We need to check in and out of every
port ( and pay a nominal fee) and even some port anchorages are
subject to a fee.

8 ) MY CROSSROADS

Some days cruising are perfect....,others not so much! Two
nights ago we were at Bahia Portrero, CR. The next day was one
of those cruising days where not much of anything went per plan.
The plan was to leave Portrero at 4:30am to be able to get into
Bahia Ballena, CR before dark so as to avoid the numerous long
liners we have been warned about as you come around the point
into Gulfo de Nicoya. It started unraveling almost immediately
when I spotted several pangas in the darkness with their little white lights
in my intended path. Having seen their long lines in the
daylight I give those things a 3 mile berth in the dark and
I’m not sure that’s enough. So I detoured around them but
because of the small islands and the rock gardens around
Portrero it was a big detour! We still would have made the
plan but before too long we ran into the TWO KNOT adverse
currents mentioned in Charlie’s Charts. The current stayed
with us most of the day and killed our chances of getting in
before dark. To add to our less than perfect day we had wind
up to 30 knots on the beam for a couple of hours. Oh and let
me not forget that our stabilizers decided to take the day
off.
So we ended up in Bahia Carrillo which is
uncrowded and wide open. A little rolly but I deployed the
flipper stopper which seemed taking care of it pretty
well.......for a while. We rolled our eyeballs out all night
only to discover in the morning that the flopper stopper had
become detached and was held on to the boat only by the
retrieval line. An imperfect end to an imperfect day.
I almost forgot, I spent three hours on the phone with Tmobile
and Square Trade trying to get my phone unlocked so that I can
use the new SIM card in it. How very entertaining that was!
On the plus side it only took me about 1-1/2 hrs to get the
stabilizer problem sorted and I took a nice swim off the back
of the boat.
Yesterday we moved the 54 nm from Carrillo to Ballena in a
perfect powerboat day.....no wind. Ballena is a large
uncrowded Bay and we’re looking to do some exploring over the
next few days. We miss the Posse!
Cheers,
Stan & Diane

We’ve been sick and might leave tomorrow to

FLEET UPDATE 2018-04-05

Congrats to us all,  70 boats now part of Panama Posse 2018 and we have 15 already signed up for 2019.   It's been a tremendous first year.  Many thanks to everyone in making this an epic journey of cruiser karma and just wonderful experiences.  Just 2 months left to conclude this season's Panama  Posse. Big Bash Panama Posse Party in Marina Vista Mar at the end of May details to follow.

Latest fleet updates from PANAMA

2) M/V CROSSROADS  - Panama
We have had a great time in Panama. We have mets lot of interesting people, made new friends and experienced a transit through the Canal on our own boat. However since we have arrived on the Caribbean side on the 21st we have been pinned down by 20-25 knot winds and steep, short period 8-12 ft seas outside the harbor. Finally, the weather is supposed to break tomorrow and now it is time to move on. Leaving Panama to head north on a small boat is easier said than done....unless of course you enjoy pain and suffering. For the winter months and into early spring the winds and seas generally come from the east and the northeast, exactly the directions you virtually have to go to leave Panama. Bashing head-on into the prevailing winds and seas in a boat is really not a lot of fun. Of course you could wait until summer when the winds abate somewhat, but then you have to contend with squalls, thunderstorms, hurricanes and belligerent insurance companies.

Our intended route to the Colombian Isla Providencia off the coast of Nicaragua and on northward to Grand Cayman Island takes us past numerous shallow banks, shoals and tiny islands. We will steer clear of those but because there have been a number of reports of piracy off of the Nicaraguan and Honduran coasts over the past few years, we will travel 150 to 200 nm offshore to hopefully avoid any trouble areas. The entire route is a bit over 600 nm.

The first leg of the journey to Providencia (where we hope to take a break for a day or two if the weather holds) should take us about 36 hours, the second leg to Grand Cayman should be about 48 hrs. If it looks like the weather is going to close in on us, we will skip Providencia and head straight for Grand Cayman.

The current plan, which seems to change every few hours, is to leave early on Easter Sunday. Hoping the seas lay down for us!

4) FRED AGAIN III - Panama

is in Panama...at Taboga Island, the little town of Las Flores. Anchoring off of El Morro, I experienced poor holding. Mooring balls are $10.00/day. There are no services here...a few fun looking bars but no water and no fuel. Ferry to the mainland is $10.00 each way and runs several times per day.

Off of Punta Mala, the currents and rip tides are ferocious. Be prepared for strong headwinds all the way across to Balboa. Have lots of fuel and lots of patience for this crossing. Winds were out of the north 18 Kts, gusting to 24 knots, for hours and hours...

No services here, on Isla Taboga...None at all! It looks to be a great little resort town; a couple of great looking boutique hotels, two churches and a population of only 950. There are no motorized vehicles...a few electric golf carts and the odd service vehicle, but that's about it.

I'm down to fumes in diesel fuel...I wasn't expecting that extra 24 hours in the Gulfo Panama!! I'll leave the boat here tomorrow on a mooring ball ($10.00 per day), and take the ferry ($10.00 each way), to the other side for diesel. Once I have fuel, I'll be a bit more mobile.

Anyone else around...where are you?

5) MYLA - Panama

We are kind of dead in the water here in panama. Just got a new alternator to correct charging problems, and it works. Great electrician named Tim Valentin. Then replaced thermostat to correct engine overheating issue... didn't fix the problem. Sea water intake clear. Sea strainer clear. Exhaust elbow has no issues. Any ideas out there?

 RESPITE
Julie John -We had a Volvo before we replaced it. We had a heat exchanger problem for a couple of year couldn’t get any rpm or it would heat up. Thought we saw a Volvo dealing here? Let us know if we can do anything.

 AVANT
Heat exchanger or bad sensor. My gauge reads ~185° when my engine is at ~165° due to sensor creep. Since I know that, I don’t worry. Have you managed to get eyes on the heat exchanger?

CROSSROADS
You need to verify the actual operating temperature of the engine. Shoot the area near the sensor. It should be in the neighborhood of 180-185 deg f. If that is what you have you have a bad sensor or faulty wiring. If the engine is actually overheating take the end cap off of the seawater inlet end of the heat exchanger. Clean out any debris there (you will often find broken impeller bits in there), also take a coat hanger wire or something similar and push it through each of the exchanger tubes in the bundle. Any bits that come out should then you out the exhaust or you can open the other end and clean them out.

RAVEN
We had some overheating issues on our way down as well. I'd pressure test your transmission cooler and oil cooler and check all the raw water lines. We found a few kinks in the lines that were causing restrictions. You can also test the thermostat by boiling water to 180 degrees and placing the thermostat into the water. It should "pop" if it is functioning correctly.

Pirates!! We had our first encounter with true pirates last night. We're all safe but I can't say the same for our food! After a day trip to Manzanillo where we bought some fresh avocados and other items, we woke up this morning to a mess in our forward stateroom. Even though we may not really need it, we're still running with air conditioner at night as long we're plugged into the dock. We close off the forward stateroom by closing the connecting door, no need to air condition a room we really are not using, but we do leave the forward hatches open. Barra Marina has a lot of hungry little coatimundi raccoons. They found their way into our forward stateroom last night and had their way with the groceries we had failed to put away. Clever little critters.

We headed toward the panga tending the line and asked how far was the end and he said 1000meters. All orange floats.
Then he told us to go between floats. I asked was the line deep enough and he said yes. Went through without issue.

We had to replace the remote control for the anchor winch next morning and as we saw on the gribfiles from Sailmail we would have wind in the afternoon. So we all set sail and had a lovely sail on spinaker, sometimes making 7-8 knots.

7) Of course we realized we could not reach Caleta de Campos  before dark, but we figured the bay would not be that difficult. We barely reached Caleta at 7 pm, could see a little bit. We anchored near the breakwater. Simple Life came in an hour later and they anchored a bit more in, to the east. We both had not expected the bay to be so small and hearing the surf so close by was not very nice.

Our position was 18 04.32 N 102 45.02 W depth 7.7 m good holding. We were comfortable but Simple Life was not and they left very early this morning for Isla Grande. There is not much wind, and on the nose, we will anchor just east of Lazardo Cardenas and continue tomorrow. We did not have GE charts of Maruata and Campos.

10) BETTY MC - Costa Rica

We had a different experience to the posse posting of a few weeks ago at Manuel Antonio National Park and I thought I should let you know.  Maybe it's a bit of a "luck of the draw" but.....

Turns out that you are not allowed to land on the national Park beach and leave a dinghy (or in our case kayak).  It was confiscated some time while we were walking around and took 2-3 hrs to get back from their locked storage compound, requiring proof it was ours, passports, signed letters of release blah blah.  The (friendly but firm) officials say you must land on the public beach (where they acknowledge security is poor).  They suggested maybe to pay one of the "watersports" rental places to look after the dinghy.
Also, we couldn't  pay for anchoring.  They said it must be done at a particular bank that is not nearby (would not accept at the ticket office or take cash).  We're here on Sunday when banks are closed anyway and the park is shut tomorrow.  After lots of calls and talking, they said to just forget it.  So we're not sure what others have done.
We talked with them for a long while.  At first they were quite hostile, thinking we hadn't paid entry or tried to pay anchorage.  Once they realised we had paid entry and the morning staff had confirmed we tried to pay anchorage, they were more friendly.  Still it was a hassle and really without a clear resolution as to what boats should do.
We are not on Facebook and prefer not to post under our name but thought I should provide you with this information which seems at odds with your experience.
Cheers,

Rodger

13) COLMENA - Nicaragua
Colmena is anchored in Estero Paso Caballos above Corinto Nicaragua. 12 31.58 N 87 11.97 W 10'. Corinto is a challenge because of the lack of a good landing spot for the dink. The Samara guide shows a place called "Marina Corinto" up the estuary which no longer exists. So it took a little creativity to get myself to town, and get checked in. But all's well that ends well.

- when you return pull the dingy back to the dock with the long line
- as always lock it !

2) SV JULIA MAX - Costa Rica

Hi Everyone, Golfito is a small town as a Port
of Entry/Departure. We stayed at Fish Hook Marina,
506/2775-1624,(www.fishhookcr.com) a
new well-maintained marina. Bilingual, Electricity 30/50amp,
potable water, trash, laundry, restrooms/showers,
restaurant/sports bar. We used a cab to drive us to the
various locations for check-out and international zarpe:
Immigration (very friendly), Customs, Banco National, and Port
Captain. Great experience! Panama is a long, skinny country. 5
days to Las Perlas, just south of Panama City. We anchored at
Punta Burica, Islas Secas, Isla Coiba, Ensenada Naranjo, and
Ensenada Benao. Winds for sailing were 10-15k diurnal. We
snorkeled at Coiba after paying a National Park Fee for one
night of $100 for boat/captain and 1 crew. We found some great
snorkeling spots, and not so great spots. One of our greatest
finds was a fellow cruising boat, sv Illusion, with Stan and
Sally Honey on board. Yes, the co-founders of Sailmail which
we use all the time for SSB Sailblog, e-mail and weather
forecasts. We had a great evening with them, and will be
seeing them along the way. Our plan is to arrive at Marina La
Playita on March 2nd. There is a great Panama Cruising Guide,
by Eric Bauhaus, with chartlets, depths and anchorage/marina
information that is highly recommended. His Guide is in its
5th Edition (2015). It can be bought in Panama City at
Islamorada Nautical Bookstore (www.islamorada.com).

Cheers to all,

6) RESPITE - Costa Rica

Posse fleet, thought I would share
what happened to Respite when checking into Costa Rica. We
had gotten our exit Zarpa from San Juan Del Sur. I
presented the exit Zarpa to the Port Captain in Costa Rica
and the Port Captain in SJDS had made a mistake on the
exit Zarpa he had entered the exit date where the name off
the boat should have been. The CR PC would not accept this
document. Said I need to back to Nicaragua. To make a long
story short with the help of  Marina Puesta del Sol we
were able to get in contact with the PC in SJDS to correct
the mistake.  The moral of this story is to double check
the documents before leaving any of the check in or check
out offices. Below is the Zarpa in question.

morning to around 35 knot gusts overnight. We tucked in
for a night at Bahia Santa Elena at 10°55'22.2"N
85°47'30.0"W with flat waters but the winds still pumped
over the hills.

After completing the
complicated check-in process at Playa Del Coco. The phone
number for customs at the airport is +506 2668-1336 in
case the security person doesn’t know who to contact. We
are now kicking back for a few days at Marina Papagayo.
Harbormaster/Manager Dan and his staff are super friendly
and helpful.  Be careful when coming in if the Papagayo
winds are blowing.  The surge and wind make docking a
little challenging, but the marina provides several dock
hands to help grab our lines. They are $2/ft/day, with
moorage deals for the Posse depending on how long you
stay. We had friends visiting from Seattle for spring
break and were able to enjoy the pool, Andaz Beach House
on Play Nascascolo (free use with marina stay but
restaurant is very expensive for lunch).  The DiveBar
restaurant at the marina is reasonably priced and good.
They have a small chandlery (expensive, do you see a
pattern?) and a snack store, but no other real provisions.
We rented a car at the marina today for $115
for 2 days and had a nice 2-hour horseback ride on and
around Playa Panama with Tico Tours for $75/person followed
by a fabulous dinner at Ginger restaurant (Asian tapas) just
down the road in Playa Hermosa. We’ll be heading inland for
some touring tomorrow and then back to Playa Del Coco by
Thursday to meet up with anyone who is still there and do
the paperwork shuffle again.

12) CROSSROADS

Dear Panama Posse,

We miss you all. Fortunately we have met many friendly
cruisers along the way.
We really liked Golfito. It was small and is still a typical
Costa Rica town. The anchoring is very easy and plentiful,
with good holding, in the natural harbor, just behind the
Land and Sea houseboat and the Fishhook Marina. We were
planning to go to a marina, but the anchoring was so nice
that we did not move. Clearly all of the marinas will
negotiate their price if you desire to stay at a marina, but
we really enjoyed anchoring out.
Unfortunately, when we were in town, the main street the
entire length of the town was torn up for road construction
and so there is one lane through town, which alternates
traffic direction and makes taking a taxi or bus through
town a very long ordeal. So we either walked or took our
dingy up and down the length of the town. We highly
recommend taking your dingy for checking in and out.
When we went to the Port Captain to check in, he said that
we didn't have to check in to Golfito if we had checked into
the country in Coco (which we had done). However, we did
have the Port Captain check our paperwork and we were given
a little slip to use later at checkout to tell the bank what
we owed. The Port Captain is at the other end of town from
where we anchored, just outside the new marina which you
will see when you enter the harbor. We went to the fuel dock
at the new marina and asked if we could leave our dingy
there to go to the Port Captain and they were very friendly
and said yes. (Bring a large fender or two for your dinghy
as the fuel dock is high above the water exposing your
inflatable to some sharp aluminum square tubes that could
make for a bad day).
From the fuel dock you just walk outside the marina, turn
right and the Port Captain office is just there.

To check out,you go to
    1. Immigration,
    2. Customs,
    3. Bank,
    4. Port Captain.

(The Sarana Guide has a very good description and map of the
process) Immigration is in the center of the town on the
main road, just across the street from the Samoa Restaurant
and Bar. Happily the Samoa Restaurant has a dock that you
can dock the dinghy at for 500 colones an hour, and cross
the street to Immigration to get the first step done. There
is a sign on the dock that says Bienvenudo, which is
constructed of plastic floats. Immigration requires three
copies of all documents, including the zarpe and document
that you received in CoCo. If you don't have them,
Immigration will send you to a place where you can get
copies made, but it is several blocks down the road.
Immigration is open 8 a.m.-4 p.m, Monday-Friday.
After immigration you can take your dingy back to the new
Marina and ask if you can leave it at the fuel dock. It will
take you awhile to complete your check-out. First you have
to walk or take a taxi (recommended) from the new marina to
the duty free zone where all the duty free stores are
located. There you ask where to find the customs office
(Aduana)and take you paperwork from immigration there. We
waited quite awhile at Customs. Then we went to the Banco
Nacionale, which conveniently has an office there in the
duty-free complex, and paid our $50.00 exit fee. The fee is
based on boat size, so you need to get that information from
the port captain before you go to the bank. If you do not
have it when you leave customs, there is also a branch of
the bank closer to the Port Captain's office.
Finally you go to the Port Captain and get your
international Zarpe.
We spent from about 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. doing this. You need to
go to the offices the day before you plan to leave and you
must leave in 24 hours (although per immigration it is 12
hours, but don't worry if it is less than 24 hours we were
told).
We hope that this is helpful as we were sooooooo happy to
find the docks for our dingy when we were doing the exit
paperwork. We did make the walk back and forth to the new
marina on one of our excursions, and it was LONG and HOT! We
also ate at the beach-side restaurant at the new Marina
which was fairly good but not cheap.
Enjoy yourselves,

The
dreaded Golfo de Tehuantepec crossing is behind us and
Gadabout is in Chiapas. After a smooth trip from Acapulco
we did a quick turn in Huatulco to take advantage of a
perfect weather window. Once clear of the main potential
T-pec’er impact zone we stayed about 7 miles off the
coast. We dodged a lot of commercial fishermen and battled
a current but didn’t have to worry about the panga long
lines. Overall it was exactly what we had hoped for,
including last night’s meal of freshly-caught mahi-mahi.

FLEET UPDATE 2018-01-25

1) Hi!
I am Carolyn from Third Wish. First, tell Sam and Dave, Lin
and Lou, Bill and Jean hello from us, please. Second, a
warning. We went through the Canal in March 2017 and were
guided onto a reef by our Panamanian line handler, Omar. That
story will be in this Feb. issue of SAIL magazine. We are now
shipping our boat to Ensenada since it is impossible to
complete repairs at Shelter Bay Marina. In the past 9 months,
ten other boats have hit this unmarked reef. More to the
point, last week, our line handler Omar again led a boat onto
the reef, where the Coast Guard had to rescue them. They are
now on the hard repairing their rudder and keel. Our Canal
Agent, Roy Bravo, told us he would no longer be employing
Omar. Well, Omar is still working and still inept. Roy Bravo
is offering no help (other than prayers). Many people here
know our story and other stories like ours, all involving Omar
and Roy Bravo. I am not the type to be vindictive. I do not,
however, want others to go through our sad experience. There
are many other Canal Agents and Line Handlers. That Roy is
still hiring Omar, and that Omar is still running boats onto
the reef, is quite disconcerting. I just felt I should warn
you all to learn from our bad experience. Enjoy the sail
south, we sure did. We stopped in SO many sweet places. Panama
is an amazing country. Just beware of these two smooth
talkers. You're welcome!

2)
Fred Again,
Hola

My credit card was compromised today so I need to have a new

looking for ideas on where I can receive mail there or further
south? This is pretty important since I am carrying little
cash so all ideas welcomed. Thank you!!!!

Hola
from Fred Again... yes again!!! We are mooring in Acapulco and
are having an issue with our deep cycle batteries (we have two
group 31s connected in parallel). We are looking for
advice/direction for a replacement battery. Gracias Possee.

Fred Again is on the move after a wonderful, but short stay
in Zihuatanejo. While on land we had a wonderful tour of Xihuacan ruins.
We went with Norma Blanco (local tour guide – mobile is 755-127-0982 or email: nblanco16@hotmail.com )
and the head archeologist, Rodolfo.  (We found Norma via the
Possee update from...  by ).

The evening ended with a sunset sail with our new friends,
their two kids, and a very wonderful mechanic and his wife (who
helped diagnosis and repair a transmission issue).  A great outing
with locals!!

We are now just outside of Zihuatanejo and headed to Huatulco
with a possible fuel stop in Acapulco and possible anchorage stop
in Puerto Angel.

Estimated arrival to Huatulco is Jan 28th.

We would love to buddy boat across the Tpec if there are others
in the Possee in Huatulco who are waiting for a weather window.

Thank you,

MV
CROSSROADS - JULIA MAX - COSTA RICA

After a great day yesterday in Bahia Santa Elena we moved today to
Playa del Coco. We made the 45nm journey with anything from 8kts to
30kts of wind behind us or on the beam.
We arrived and anchored in Coco at almost the same time as S/V
JuliaMax. Tried to check into the country but by the time we got the
dinghy in the water and braved the surf ashore the Capitania de
Puerto was gone for the day.
We’ll try again tomorrow. Check-in is ashore near the beach for the
Port Captain, up the street for Immigration and a 45 minute car ride
to the airport for Customs. You can’t go into Marina Papagayo until
you are checked in and you can’t do that there (you have to go to
Coco) or the Marina will help hire an agent to do it for you for a
significant fee.
We will check-in tomorrow and probably share a ride to the airport
with JuliaMax.
That’s it for today!
Cheers,
Stan
The northernmost port of entry into Costa Rica is Playa del Coco or
if you don't mind paying an exorbitant fee for an agent to help you
Marina Papagayo at the top of Bahia Culebra will help you. Either
way the paperwork is processed out of the Coco Officina de Captania
de Puerto.
I think the Costa Rican have the paperwork cha-cha thing down to a
fine science! Here is what our day today looked like. Fellow Posse
crew from JuliaMax flagged down a panga at 0800 to pick us all up
from the anchorage and take us to shore (thus avoiding a repeat of
our less than stellar dinghy launching and landing performance from
the day before). We quickly made our way to the Port Captain's
office which is 100' from the beach on the main road. I lost track
of time but the process for both boats took somewhat more than an
hour.
Next step was immigration several blocks up the same street on the
right hand side in a smallish white building set off the street. I
think we were there another hour or so then back to the Port Captain
for another visit of thirty minutes or so.
Next stop was Customs at the airport a 30 minute ($50 round trip)
cab ride away. At the airport there is no Customs office just a
gigantic arrivals lobby that was empty save two airport workers who
called Customs for us and told us they would be right out. An hour
later we were still waiting. Eventually a guy appeared in the lobby
asked for our paperwork and passports and disappeared for 20
minutes. When he reappeared he brought a clipboard full of forms for
us to fill out while we stood there. He then disappeared again with
the paperwork and reappeared twenty minutes later stamped our papers
and sent us on our way.
Now back to the Port Captain's office for final papers and a
National Zarpe. Apparently to leave Coco and go anywhere else you
must have an internal National Zarpe. Another twenty to thirty
minutes and we were told that the woman that issues the Zarpe was
not there for another hour or so. So off to lunch we went.
Ate at Coconutz a micro-brewery down the street. The beer was good,
food so-so, service not so great, atmosphere gringo touristica.
Back to the Port Captain's office and arrived in time for the woman
we were to see to hand us some paperwork as she walked out saying
the other guy would take care of it. That guy first insisted that we
must tell him where the next place we were going was and then come
back to Coco to get clearance to the next place after that and that
we were to do this for each stop we made. It took some time to tell
him that wouldn't work, because we could not come back t Coco after
each stop. He made calls and settled for a list of stops all the way
to Golfito where we will eventually check out of the country.
Probably we should have just told him Golfito and not bothered to
check in at the various stops in between. Anyway all this took
another hour or so and then we were DONE! Just in time too, because
they close at 1500 and it was well past that.
Next on the agenda was SIM cards for our phones. I had purchased a
Movistar card at a tienda the day before (for $2.00) and was having
trouble activating it, though I was getting a little bit of data
through it. Anyway we found a place on the main drag on the right
hand side a few blocks up from Coconutz and directly across the
street from the big Auto Mercado. It's called GD Computador. They
spoke good English and sold us Kobi SIM cards with 2GB of 4G data
and one hour talk time for about $20.00. I added an additional one
hour talk time for another few dollars.
We didn't do any grocery shopping but there are a couple of good
supermarkets in town plus many roadside vendors.
After a long day of bureaucratic red tape we finally flagged down
another panga and begged him to run us out to our boats, it took
some convincing because he was tired and wanted to go home but he
finally gave in and off we went. A very full but productive day!
C
Over and out,
Stan & Diane

We upped anchor from Coco this morning and moved 27 nm south to
Bahia Portrero, Anchored in 24’ at 10’ 26.49N, 85’ 46.97W.
Nice bay, getting 10-25 kts wind from the east. Several dozen boats
anchored and on moorings here. We are anchored in front of the
breakwater to the now defunct marina. We aren’t going ashore but
beach break doesn’t look too bad. Houses and condos on shore and I
can see at least one restaurant.
Not much swell today so hopefully we’ll have a flat, quiet night.
We plan to move on tomorrow just before first light and will
hopefully make Bahia Ballena 100 nm down the road before dark.
Over and out,
Stan

6) OCTOPUS

Hola Posse! Don't be scared off by bad press about Acapulco. We've
really enjoyed it here. Stay on the mooring, leave your dinghy on
deck and let Vincente and crew ferry you to shore. There is a good
grocery store in easy walking distance plus Oxxo and Circle K. You
can walk to the Zocalo. There are places to eat close. Today we took
a 10 peso bus to a big mall, ate at Applebee's (nice for a change)
and watched a movie in English with air conditioning 2 people for 60
pesos. While we take big city precautions we've never had any bad
vibes here.
By the way we saw the movie The Shape of Water. Very different and
good and it was great to have a day off.
After we shopped at the market and back to the mooring at sunset

we have been in Pez Vela marina (quepos) for several weeks and plan
to stay for 6-12 months. Super marina. Great wifi, great slips (
interior docks are only a couple years old). Nice restaurants and
little shops at the marina and a short walk into town for more
typical  Costa Rica stores/little restaurants.  We have found great
help on dock for deck hands (talked with people who come here each
year for references).
In contrast to papagayos marina- that was also very nice facilities,
but hardly anything to do unless you have a car. Grocery store was
about a half hour drive.

3) SEA GLASS - Bahia De Puerto Marques

Yesterday afternoon we moved the S/V Sea Glass about 5 miles
leaving central Acapulco for anchorage in Bahia De Puerto Marques.
After scouting the bay we chose to
anchor in the North end in 50' Sand bottom @ 16.48.503N
099.50.706W. Just like in Isla Grande the activity around us
stopped and most of the boats left for there slips. We watched a
beautiful sunset and enjoyed this quiet anchorage with a strong
cool breeze. Captain Vincente was anchored behind us in the
Hatteras 80' with its owner, family & friends. We heard his
generator quit and the boat went dark. I called him to find out
the generator ran out of gas. I had 5 gallons on board for our
dinghy and quickly rowed it over to them. One of those right
place at the right time things. They charged up the batteries
and were able to start there engines to get back home. They all
waved big thanks to us as they pulled out of the bay. We slept
very well here and woke up to an great view all around us. Quite
a different take on Acapulco. I highly recommend this anchorage
to other Posse as an alternative to Downtown which is only 20
miles away by taxi but worlds away in comfort.

6) SV Myla - Tracking

Proving that there are truly tech gremlins aboard....looks
like something is amiss with our newly set up and paid for
tracking service. It shows us in Carrizal, but that was where
we were about 4 days ago. We are now in Zihuatenjo. 3G working
on my ipad, not on my iphone....iridium working with texting,
but not email...grips working on iphone, but not ipad....keeps
it interesting! Hoping to have a resolution to the tracking
issue soon, while we are here in Zihuatenajo.

Meanwhile, despite what the tracking system shows...Had a
great, albeit fairly windless trip from Barra de Navidad to
Zihuatenajo. Several stops along the way where we got
together with Bula and later Sarafina, both Posse boats. We
are now in Zihuatenajo and hoping to stay here just long
enough to get laundry done, refuel, and provision - perhaps
a few days. We've been here several times before and we're
afraid if we stay too long, we might never leave! We're
hoping to catch up with others in the posse fleet. Would
love to have some company to Acapulco and parts thereafter,
hoping to leave Zihuatenajo in a day or so. We cruise at
about 6k. If others are in Acupulco or Huatulco, how long do
you plan to stay there? We will probably be stopping in
Acapulco, Huatulco and Chiapas before we continue south. Our
tracking system is still a work in progress. Hope to have it
working soon. We check our iridium go texts daily, so that
might be a good way to contact us.
