Gitana

MY GITANA a Nordhavn 60′  entering El Salvador over the bar

We are good, now in Bahia del sol. Hope to be heading south on Sunday. Both MY Last Arrow (reporting) and MY Gitana  image above) had very rough Bar crossings I went side ways with a knock down, got out and came through second time. Gitana knocked down twice made it on the 3rd attempt, I did have a steer issue occur with the jog level switching to Standy, second hand steered and locked the fins. Pilot was late so by the time we were crossing 40 mins past the turn of tide. Swells didn’t seem big but the breakers were very big.

HUATULCO NATIONAL PARK 🇲🇽 MEXICO

HUATULCO NATIONAL PARK

Huatulco National Park, also known as Bahias de Huatulco National Park is a national park of Oaxaca, Mexico. It was initially declared a protected area and later decreed as a National Park in 98. Located in Huatulco, to the west of Cruz Huatulco, it extends to an area of 29,000 acres . In the low lands of the park, there are 9,000 species of plants (about 50% of the species are reported throughout the country) in the forest and mangroves in the coastal belt. Fauna species have been identified as 264, which includes armadillos and white-tailed deer. Bird species are counted at 701, which include hummingbirds, pelicans and hawks. The reptile species are counted to be 470, which include Black Iguana, salamanders and snakes. Dolphins, whales and turtles are sighted species off the coast line, out of the identified 100 amphibian species.

Pathfinder in Huatulco

The Panama Posse was absolutely right about La India and Isla Cacaluta, why we missed the Line call yesterday, huge white sand beaches and great snorkeling and all alone at night. Our first stop at dawn from Acapulco was Playa Riscalillio/Jicaral perfect to rest after 48 hours sailing. Clear water, star filled nights, no cell service, water and weather perfect temperature at all the stops. Now at Playa Maguey for internet to check weather and eat out.

16) AIDS TO NAVIGATION

PORT OF ENTRY REPORT
BAHIA DE CARAQUEZ   🇪🇨  ECUADOR

Aids to Navigation Ecuador Rivermouth

Sorry this has taken me so long to put down on paper, but you know how things go with internet access and moving the boat etc.

So, I can give you a breakdown of the costs we encountered this past fall of 2021 for clearing into and back out of Ecuador. I do this not to deter people, but the comment on the chat was made that Ecuador was a simple $180.00 to check in, and this is, or was, not the case. There were many other fees that got added and popped up…so it is worth knowing if someone is planning on going there.

We on SV Wildhood, along with our good friends on Osa, cleared into Ecuador in Bahia de Caraquez on October 14, 2021. Maybe by fluke, or excellent seamanship, we timed the tides perfectly and did not have to drop anchor and wait to enter the river estuary. The pilot boat  from Puerto Amistad met us as we came into the outer bay, and we followed him in through the sand bars. On arrival to the mooring field off of the marina we dropped anchor for the first night as the moorings are much easier to attach when at low tide. Your entrance must be at high tide…and the pilot boat is highly advisable. None of our charts showed the “perfect path” into the river.

The following fees where what we needed to pay, for check in, and checking back out when we left (solo this time) on November 24, 2021. All prices in USD.

1. $ 20.00 - Pilot boat fee for being led in.

2. $ 200.00 - Initial fee for the “Autographo”, sent to Gene at Puerto Amistad 2 months prior. (We initially believed this to be our “clearance fees”, but later figured out it was basically the marinas “agency fee”.)

3. $ 147.00 - “Closed Port fee”, this was due to COVID, and is now apparently not necessary with the port being “open”.

4. $ 180.00 - Customs fee.

5. $ 180.00 - Health visit/Covid tests, this was a visit to the boat by two nurses, $100.00 plus $20/person for the rapid tests. Not sure if this requirement has changed or not.

6. $ 189.00 - Check out/clearance out of Ecuador. Worth mentioning that customs does not come back to the Bahia for check out, so you have to go to Manta for this, plan ahead.

7. $ 50.00 - Taxi to Manta and back for Customs run.

8. $ 30.00 - Pilot boat fee for exiting the river. Not sure why it was more, and yes, it was a slightly different track out, and still very “skinny”, and we only draft 4’.

Total cost for checking in and back out - $ 996.00 USD

Bahia de Caraquez

You may also be asked for a “Sewage Certificate” to go along with the initial paper work you send ahead of time.

It is also worth mentioning that if your boat will be in the river estuary for a bit, it will get dirty…and not just a little dirty, I mean absolutely filthy! We had full fish carcasses and skeletons all over our decks…and the associated bird droppings to go with them. The underwater growth is also amazing! If you have folding props you will want to go down and clean them off as ours would not have even opened up, they were that encrusted. You can pay the guys at the marina to clean your bottom if you so chose. Also worth mentioning, there is not a dock at the marina. Your boat will be on a mooring or anchored. Fuel can be tricky, as the fuel stations can only sell you a minimal amount (I forget the exact amount) at a time, so this may require several trips, on different days, or sweet talking the station attendant. And no fuel dock, jerry cans.

My initial comment on the PP chat was that the total costs were “over $1000.00”, I apologize as it seems my quick mental math was slightly off. The above is as exact as our records allow. I do not offer up this information to try and deter people from visiting Ecuador, it is an amazing country, and we loved it. Our month traveling inland was fantastic. However, on the PP chat it was mentioned recently that the cost for Ecuador was $180.00, and I figured it was worth mentioning that the overall price will be much different. It now seems that cruisers can save on the “closed port fee” as it is no longer “closed”. Although from what I have heard Bahia de Caraquez is still the only open port.

We have a lot of other “opinions” on the services there and what not, but this is not the place for that...folks can contact me directly with specific questions if they would like. Like I’ve said before, we loved Ecuador!

Cheers, and happy cruising!

21) FEATURED VIDEO SY SAN’S ANCHOR CHAIN APP

Panama Posse Convoys

Anchor Chain Calculator App is designed to help you get this assurance. It will help you determine the minimal length of chain that you need to pay out, based on a number of weather conditions and vessel parameters. With this minimal length of chain the anchor only needs to bear the smallest possible load, which maximizes the chances that the anchor will actually hold. And if you cannot pay out that amount of chain, for one reason or another, the App will tell you how much the anchor load increases, and at which angle the chain will pull at the anchor. The larger this angle is, the less the anchor will hold, and so you will want to keep this angle small.

App decision tree

An important part of your anchor gear is the snubber / bridle, which is essential to absorb swell and often is not recognized for this. I encourage you to play around with this parameter to see what huge benefits good snubbers / bridles have.

A sure way to create a long and heated debate is to walk into a bar full of sailors and start a discussion about how to anchor correctly. It seems no topic is discussed more controversially than anchoring! And yet, it would appear so simple – your throw out your hook, make sure the chain and/or rode is long enough, make sure the hook bites, and that’s it. Yet, everybody seems to have their own recipe how to do things correctly when it comes to anchoring.

And certainly, if you are alone in a large bay at anchor, you can pay out all the chain you have. Then you may think, oh well, I could not possibly have done more than that.

It starts already here – will it be enough, what you did? Wouldn’t it be great to get a better sense of how your anchor gear will stand up to the weather foretasted for the next night? Do you have any safety margins built in? Is a scope of 5:1 really enough? Or should you go up to 7:1? Or even more? Or should you relocate the vessel to another place? What about snubbers and bridles? Do you need them? Or, perhaps you need to use as little chain as you possibly can, as you are rather close to a friendly neighbor at anchor, or a not-so-friendly corral reef. How much can you reduce the chain length and still be safe?

Marine charts and cruising guides give clear directions to get to Great Harbour Cay. Our Marina can be reached by passing either around the North end of Bimini or the South end (though the South end is a bit trickier). Both paths join long before the final approach to Great Harbour Cay Marina. If a marina is entered at Bimini, boats will clear Customs and Immigration there. But it is also an option to anchor out at Bimini or Mackie Shoals, or passage straight through, and clear Customs and Immigration on Great Harbour Cay.

It is important to note that the "cut" which must be passed through to enter the interior harbour and marina at Great Harbour Cay is nearly invisible until the final turn just outside.

1) DOMINICAN REPUBLIC ENDS MASK MANDATE
AND ALL OTHER COVID-19 RULES

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic ended all COVID-19 public health restrictions on
Thursday, including a mask mandate and vaccine checks in public spaces,
despite not yet reaching the government's vaccination target of 70%
coverage for adults

President Luis Abinader made the announcement on social media and in a televised message late Wednesday.

After this long battle, we started to get our freedom back. From now on, we
will all have to take care of ourselves, responsibly, but without
restrictions, ”he indicated. With the announcement of the president, the
responsibility of taking care of COVID-19 acquires an individual
character. “The government did what it had to do to protect our people
and time has proven us right in our actions against the pandemic,” he
added.

Health Minister Daniel Rivera told reporters on Thursday that ending the containment measures was due to "constant reductions" in both COVID-19 infections and death rates.

Unlike most Caribbean countries, the country doesn't require proof of
vaccination, a Covid test or quarantine for most incoming visitors.

COIBA

In 1992, Panama created Coiba National Park, encompassing over 1,042
square miles of islands, forests, beaches, mangroves and coral reefs,
and in July 2005, Unesco declared it a World Heritage Site.

COIBA

The only overnight facility available in the Coiba National Park is at the
ANAM ranger station. The station offers several modest 2 room cabins
with air conditioning. To Contact ANAM call (507) 998-0615 or the
National Park office (507) 998-4271. Subject to Park fees

Visiting Coiba

Boca Chica to Isla Parida "Ensenada Los Negros - nice, a tad rolly;

Ensenada del Varadero
- sweet cove surrounded by 5 palm tree lined beaches - anchored in 7'
at low tide - very quiet with no noise or light pollution;

Playa Del Socoro - shallow sandy bottom with decent viz. Nice easy swim to beach. Views of the mainland and mountains; cell spotty and weak."

Coiba

 The
park includes Coiba island, 38 smaller islands off the southwest coast
of Panama, and the surrounding marine areas within the Gulf of Chiriquí
providing protection for coral reefs, humpback whales, pilot whales,
killer whales, dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays, marlins and other
marine creatures.

Coiba
Coiba

Often
referred to as “PANAMA'S GALAPAGOS,” Coiba National Park  with
astounding biodiversity and wildlife that can’t be found anywhere else
on earth. One of the largest marine parks in the world and the last
refuge for a number of threatened animals.

Tutles

We
just wrapped 21 days of cruising Coiba and the many islands inside the
park boundary and adjacent. Truly blissful exploration, snorkeling and
scuba diving. Pay to play - check in at the park headquarters, we got 10
days for 7 pay to enjoy. Provision in Boca Chica/Pedregal or Santa
Catalina. And there is zero cell, except for a secret spot at the park
HQ. Hands down the best cruising ground in Central America we have
experienced in my humble gestalt certified ...

6) DESTINATIONS AND EXCURSIONS

LAS GRUTAS & TAXCO, MEXICO

PATHFINDER

We visited one of the world’s largest cave systems called Las Grutas Cacahuamilpa just 40 mins from Taxco by bus or combi.

The
park has two underground rivers called the Chontalcoatlán, which is
eight km long, and the San Jeronimo, which is 12 km long. The tunnels
that have been formed by these rivers are still completely active, as
the water continues to cut away little by little at the rock. Both have
areas with rocks and sandy beaches on each side and the darkness is
complete in much of the tunnels’ lengths.

Tours
of the open cave system run every hour and last about two hours.
On the walkway to the entrance there are a couple of amate trees
with their roots wound around the rocky walls of Limontitla
Canyon.

The entrance is a large arch about forty meters wide and twelve meters
tall. From the entrance, one descends about twenty meters to the level
of the caverns. The path has a mostly level cement walkway, and there is
artificial illumination on both the path and parts of the salons. Parts
of the movie Tarzan and the Valley of Gold were filmed at the caverns.

After the Conquest, the existence of the caves was kept hidden from the Spaniards by the indigenous peoples.[2] Credit for the “discovery” of the caves is given to Manuel Sainz de la Peña Miranda, who used the caves in 1834 to hide from Spanish authorities, which prompted a thorough search of the area.[2][4][6] In 1866, Dominik Bilimek and Maximiliano von Habsburg made the first biospeleological visit to the cave.

The Parroquia de Santa Prisca y San Sebastían, commonly known as the Church
of Santa Prisca, is a colonial monument located in the city of Taxco de
Alarcón, in the southern state of Guerrero, Mexico, built between 1751
and 1758.

The San Jeronimo River has its origins in natural springs that lie in San Pedro Zictepec, Mexico State.

Great city and natural wonders all around to visit!

MISCHARTED ROCK IN BAHIA HUEVOS

WARNING IN COSTA RICA ANCHORAGE:  Bahia Huevos, just NW of Marina
Papagayo.   In both the Pat Rains and Charlie's Charts have
chartlets showing an anchorage on the S side of the bay that is actually
a location of a rock that is exposed at lower tides.  I believe
both authors have their anchor located one indent east too far.  In
Pat's guide, her x marks a hazard appears to be in a bay that is
preferred.   We cruised quickly through that bay without seeing a
hazard but obviously my review is not complete.  I feel her x and
anchor marks are switched.  In the photo I will post next I marked
the location of the exposed rock with radar at N 10.636 W 85.680.
The Yellow x is where Pat has her X in the guidebook.   This
is also a bay that many day charters use to anchor.  I will try and
add the hazard to Good Nautical when I have more service.  To that
point, the rock is visible in sat imagery...

15) PANAMA POSSE CONVOYS

Violent incidents appear to be executed by “part-time pirates”,

fisherman who organize on an ad hoc basis and seize targets of

opportunity in the absence of effective law enforcement.  They do

not target larger commercial vessels at this time.

Areas

Geographically,
the Honduran and Nicaraguan east coasts do not provide harbor for
larger vessels and the national navies are small and poorly equipped to

deal with the issue, as they are small forces primarily designed for

dealing with coastal and riverine security.  The naval forces are

under-resourced.

ext

As the incidents normally occur well offshore, often between 75 and 125

miles from land, they are beyond VHF radio range from shore bases, and

in
any case it is believed the relevant navies do not effectively maintain
a 24/7 radio watch. It is uncertain what other illegal activities these
part time pirates may engage in.

While these areas are variously within the territorial waters or exclusive

economic
zones of Colombia, Guatemala, or Honduras, they are not effectively
patrolled or policed by any of these states.  Adding complication
to the situation, some areas including the Serranilla Bank are disputed
territories.

For
westbound vessels, a transit of the Venezuelan coast from Trinidad to
the ABCs and Columbia is often undertaken.  For vessels leaving
Colombia to points north, a close approach to the easternmost stretch of
the Venezuelan coast is also unavoidable.  There has also been an
increase in piracy activities in the coastal waters near Trinidad,
believed to be the actions of Venezuelan smugglers area.

Refrigeration Trouble Shooting Guide

Troubleshooting   Marine Refrigerators

(excerpts from Indel Webasto USA and Isotherm-parts)

This guide was created to help the non-professional refrigerator owner and professional service company trouble shoot a marine refrigerator. It starts with the most common cause of failure and describes actions you would take to determine the cause of failure.

Loss of Power: A break in the wiring or loose connectors is one of the most common sources of refrigerator failure. To test the power supply for the refrigerator, you must test at the electronics module.

  • Start by removing the refrigerator from the cabinet enclosure so you can easily reach the electronics module on the back of the refrigerator.
  • The refrigerator is held with screws in the flange to the face of the cabinet. Remove these screws and gently pull the refrigerator from the enclosure. There should be sufficient length of wire to set the refrigerator down in front of the enclosure with power wires still connected.
  • With a voltage meter, test the voltage coming in to the power connectors by inserting the probes into the positive and negative power inputs. You should get a reading of 12+ volts for DC and 100 volts or more for AC. It is important to test the power at the terminals on the  electronics module. Bad wiring or connectors can keep power from reaching the electronics module.
  • The compressor should run continuously at low speed when terminals T and C are connected. This will confirm that the electronic module is OK and that the power supply is adequate for low speed operation. If the compressor does not run or runs intermittently, starting and stopping after a few seconds, this may be caused by a poor power supply or a faulty electronic unit. To test the power supply, use a digital voltmeter. Measure the voltage at the electronic unit with the compressor off and note the voltage. Measure the voltage again with the compressor starting or running - the voltage should drop no more than 0.5V - if there is more than 0.5V drop, check all the terminals and connections carefully fort good contact, tightness and signs of corrosion. It can be helpful to connect a separate test power supply. Run separate wires (both positive and negative) directly to the batteries and re-test the power supply. Ensure the wire size is adequate for the length of run.

DC electronics module (left) AC/DC module (right)

Thermostat Failure: If you have proper power and the compressor is still not running, test for failure of the thermostat by connecting a jumper wire between terminal “C” and terminal “T” on the electronics box. If the compressor begins to run, this indicates that the thermostat has failed. The thermostat is easily replaced.

Procedure above is to be used when you have an ASU module installed

Electronics Failure: If after following the above steps and the compressor does not run, this would indicate the electronics box has failed. Replacement of the electronics module is easy.

With this simple test, we can help you identify the source of failure and restore your refrigerator to proper operating conditions. Remember that ventilation is the key to getting the best performance from your refrigerator. Cabinets sometimes trap and hold hot air which can reach temperatures above 40 degrees C (110 degrees F), the maximum recommended operating temperature for a refrigerator. Air temperatures in cabinets should be cool enough that the condenser can efficiently exchange the heat it removes from the refrigerator.

Replacement of the black DC Electronic Control Unit on BD35F and BD50F

Danfoss Compressor - Advanced Troubleshooting

  • Danfoss has a built in Error Code System that can be helpful in diagnosing a specific problem. To display the error code and LED (light emitting diode) must be connected between the + and D terminals on the electronic control module. The exact error is determined by counting the number of times the LED blinks. See below for code info.

The Danfoss Compressor electronics have additional system protection features built in. Knowing how these features operate can help diagnose problems. Protection is provided for the following:

  • Low Voltage: To prevent batteries from being totally discharged, the compressor will be stopped if the voltage at the terminals on the module falls below 10.6 volts (23.4 volts), and will not restart until the voltage rises above 11.7 volts (24.0 volts).
  • High Voltage: If the voltage exceeds 17 volts, the module stops the compressor and switches into 24 volt mode, but will not attempt to start the compressor until the voltage reaches 24 volts.
  • Compressor Non-Start: If the compressor does not start, the module will stop the start process and re-attempt a re-start every 60 seconds.
  • Compressor Speed Too Low: If the compressor speed falls below 1900 RPM the module will stop the compressor.
  • Fan (Pump) Protection: If the current draw across the fan terminals exceeds 0.7 amps 12VDC, the compressor will be stopped and a re-start attempted every 60 seconds.
  • Module Overheat: If the heat sink on the module exceeds a pre-set temperature, the compressor will be stopped and will be re-started when normal operating temperatures are resumed.

This is MY Red Rover exiting the El Salvador Bar at slack tide. Many Panama Posse Boats have found extraordinary conditions.

The swell running up against the coast of central America can have adverse
effects on crossing the bar in El Salvador - especially anything larger
than  4 feet. Any primary swell can be amplified by deep ocean (
secondary ) swells coming across the whole pacific leading to the
"thirteenth wave" not actually # 13 but simply the largest one in a set.

In surf lingo, a wave set is a series of waves that are generally larger
and often more powerful than the average for a given period of time or
day. For a fascinating insight into shallow water wave theory visit this
page

CLOSE

Red Rover is set to leave El Salvador on the high slack tomorrow morning
after 8 nights here.  Want to give a shout out to Talleres
Moldtrok,  a machine shop in San Salvador, a referral from Bill and
Jean.  They rebuilt a hydraulic cylinder that had a seal beginning
to leak.  We've been told that the shop has fixed or built from
scratch many parts for cruising boats.  Our hydraulic cylinder was
done in 3 days and cost $90.  We picked it back up then spent the
night in San Salvador.  We provisioned at Super Selecto there and
found a huge selection of many items, including US products that we
haven't seen for a while.   Rum was less than in Mexico but food
costs were more...

Additionally,
forgive me if I mentioned it earlier,  we received our booster
vaccine here as well.  The clinic is located an 8 min drive away
(gives starter and booster  shots).  Ignacio the manager at
Hotel Bahia Del Sol can arrange a ride there and back.  He is great
to chat with.

Lastly,  the check in/out process happens here at the property.   No need to travel anywhere.   Very convenient.

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY

HOW TO KEEP CUPID ONBOARD YOUR VESSEL !

Cupid on board

To
understand the difference between happy and unhappy couples,
researchers asked couples to solve a conflict in their relationship in
15 minutes. After carefully reviewing these sessions and following up
with couples almost a decade later, they were able to predict which
couples would stay together and which would break up with over 90%
accuracy.

Discovery.
The difference between happy and unhappy couples is the balance between
positive and negative interactions during conflict. There is a very
specific ratio that makes relationships last. And it’s easy to see how
this works on a boat as well.

That
magic ratio  is 1 : 5. This means that for every one
negative interaction during conflict, a stable and happy relationship
has five (or more) positive interactions.

ONE NEGATIVE INTERACTION

Examples of negative interactions include yelling, dismissive actions or gestures  as well as feelings of loneliness and isolation.
Anger is a negative interaction and a natural reaction during conflict.
Anger only has negative effects in a relationship if it is expressed
along with criticism or contempt, or if it is defensive.

Negative
interactions during conflict include being emotionally dismissive or
critical, or becoming defensive. Body language such as eye-rolling can
be a powerful negative interaction, and it is important to remember that
negativity holds a great deal of emotional power, it takes five
positive interactions to overcome any one negative interaction.

FIVE OR MORE POSITIVE INTERACTIONS TO COUNTER
ONE PRIOR NEGATIVE INTERACTION

1) INTEREST

Displaying
interest includes asking open-ended questions, as well as more subtle
signals such as nods, making eye contact, and timely ‘uh-huhs’that show
how closely you are listening. Are you curious about why he or she is
upset ?

2) AFFECTION

Within
conflict, displays of physical and verbal affection reduce stress. If
you’re having a difficult conversation and your partner takes your hand
and says,  Gosh, this is hard to talk about. I really love you and I
know we can figure this out together,  you will likely feel better
because their display of affection is bound to reduce tension and bring
you closer together.

3) MATTER

DOING
small things often. Small acts demonstrate caring and are
powerful ways to enhance the positivity in the relationship.

4) APPRECIATION

Expressing
positive thinking and giving a partner a verbal compliment, no matter
how small, acts as a strengthening of your marriage or relationship. By
focusing on the positives of your relationship and the vessel such as
the good moments from your past and your partner’s admirable traits, you
put positive energy into your relationship.

5) AGREEMENT

Seeking
opportunities for agreement and expressing this accordingly,
shows that you see your partners viewpoint as valid and that you
care about them. An alliance in conflict, even minor, can fundamentally
shift how couples fight.

6) EMPATHY & APOLOGY

Empathy
is one of the deepest forms of human connection even if expressed non
verbally through a facial expression or a physical gesture. If a partner
is upset with something simply apologize. Finding a moment during a
conflict to say  I’m sorry I hurt your feelings. That makes me sad,
you will provide a positive and empathetic interaction that
reinforces your bond.

7) ACCEPT

Summarize
your partner’s experience during a recent conflict, even if you
disagree. Validation doesn’t mean agreement, but it does signal respect
and signals an understanding that each of your perspectives are valid,
even if they are opposed to each other.

8) HUMOR

Joking
around while maintaining respect and appreciation for a partner serves
to bring  both closer together. Finding moments to laugh together
can ease tension in a heated conflict.

10) PANAMA POSSE CONVOYS

9) HOW TO SINK THE FLEET  MORALE

Why Is Coffee Called 'Joe'?

Have you ever sipped coffee in a contemplative mood and wondered how coffee
came to be known as 'JOE". There are several intriguing theories on
this, so if you’re a fan of naval history, etymology, or even just a fan
of the of that lovely brown liquid, read on

Joe

The most prevalent story behind why coffee is referred to as 'joe' comes
from World War I. Joe refers to Josephus Daniels, former U.S. Secretary
of the Navy.  He became Secretary of the Navy under President
Woodrow Wilson. Daniels wished to enforce a stricter morality in the
Navy. In a harbinger of Prohibition, Daniels abolished the consumption
of alcohol on US Naval warships, specifically rum, which was rationed to
sailors as in the British Royal Navy.

Joe

In the United States Navy, the daily ration was one-half US pint (240 ml)
of distilled spirits until 1842, when it was reduced to one gill (120
ml)

As alcohol consumption plummeted, coffee consumption rose. Of course,
sailors were none too happy about being denied their favorite drink, so
they began calling coffee a 'cup of joe' in a satirical salute to
Secretary Daniels.

Of all the stories for the term cup of joe, this one is the most
entertaining. It’s got all the elements of a great yarn: war, rebellion,
the Navy, the name Josephus, and of course, President Woodrow Wilson.
But...there is a huge hole in this theory.

For starters, Congress abolished the spirit ration in 1862, meaning it
would be very difficult for sailors to get their hands on rum aboard
U.S. Navy ships anyway.  [One could argue that the ban also applied
to sailors on naval bases, though.] It could also be that the 1862 ban
was, perhaps, only loosely enforced, as the daily ration of rum was seen
by the officers as a big morale booster and incentive for enforcing
shipboard discipline among the non-coms.

JOe and joe

Franklin D. Roosevelt and Josephus Daniels

The Shortened Words Theory

If you’re enjoy word roots, this 'joe' origin theory will pique your interest.

The term 'cup of joe' comes from two other nicknames for coffee: java and
mocha. Java is of course a reference to the Indonesian island, where
coffee is widely grown, and Mocha was the ancient Yemeni port that was
the first to export coffee.

Java and mocha were then shorted to 'a cup of jamoke,' which was a popular idiom in the '30s.

Jamoke, of course, was a terrible nickname.  So as the story goes, 'cup of
jamoke' was shortened in popular usage to 'cup of joe,' and the rest is
history.

The Common Man Theory

The next theory on the origins of the phrase 'cup of joe' is that coffee is
the common man’s drink: the average joe. Since coffee is the common
man’s drink, and 'Joe' is the common man’s name, coffee and joe became
synonymous.

Diner culture may also have had something to do with it, as more and more
diners opened up in the 1950s and 1960s. Working men stopped by diners
for their morning coffee, and when enough average joes were drinking
coffee, coffee became a “cup of joe”.

The common man theory may also have a military aspect to it. During World
War II and the Korean War, soldiers were known as 'G.I Joes,' 'G.I.'
standing for 'government issue.'

The Trademark Theory

Many phrases that come into common language are due to marketing. A company called the Martinson Coffee Company was the first to trademark the
phrase 'cup of joe.'

It’s possible that people referred to Martinson coffee as a cup of joe, due to the fact that the owner was named Joe Martinson.

The Martinson coffee company was one of the oldest coffee companies in the US, having been around since 1898.

So take your pick: no less than four plausible theories as to why coffee is called 'joe.' Contemplate, drink & enjoy!
