Lance:

I grew up in Florida operating the family’s fishing boats in both coastal and off shore environments since the early 1980’s. This valuable Florida coastal and off-shore experience is where I grew the roots of my nautical expertise and passion for the sea. I gained additional fishing boat ownership and experience in the upper mid-west on the Mississippi River, the Great Lakes, ICW, and Gulf of Mexico as well as other navigable waterways while living in Minnesota for several years before moving to Seattle and the Puget Sound.

Sherri:

I have a passion for nature and the water and started sailing in a large lake in Texas on J-boats with tillers when the ocean called. I then advanced to crewing for 14 days on a Sunsail 41 in Croatia and then again in Corsica. Since 2017, I have sailed extensively in the Pacific Northwest while recently circumnavigating Vancouver Island with over 2000NM logged since talking ownership of Queso Grande II.

INFORMATION FROM SY MILAGRO for YACHTS TRANSITING NICARAGUA - HONDURAS-COLOMBIAN caribbean coast

Official Colombian Border according to Cancilleria.gov.co (International relations Ministrey of Colombia)

Official Colombian Border according to Cancilleria.gov.co (International relations Ministrey of Colombia)

Following the incident on April 20th 2023, where 2 sailing vessels transiting north from Providencia Island were apparently harassed by a fishing boat this information might be of help of Sailing Vessels transiting the area.

Keep in mind the incident happened in Honduran Waters just north of the Nicaraguan/Colombian/Honduran Border. Suspected to be perpetuated by Nicaraguan fishing vessel.

The incident has been reported to the Colombian authorities. So IF you have any issues in the area you MUST report it officially and extended (Full Version) to the Colombian Navy. ANY incident makes a difference in the court case that is currently ongoing between Colombia and Nicaragua and helps with the security of not just yachters but that of legitimate fisherman who are being harassed sometimes as well. Its all important that ANY incident is reported as it helps the Colombian government show that the criminality is not looked after by the Nicaraguan

Authorities and Colombia wants proper control of the sea again.

Although the “attacks” are not Territorial or Politically based, its is good to share the following information. Colombia and Nicaragua at the moment (April 2023) are having some political disputes that go back to the year 2001. It is an ongoing case in international court in The Netherlands, there has been a dispute over the sovereignty of the archipelago and the territorial waters of Nicaragua and Colombia. A first court decision has been ruled in favor of Colombia, officially remaining with control over all the “land” in the archipelago including the sand banks but the territorial sea of Colombian has been reduced considerably.

Although the first decision has been ruled, Colombia has presented an appeal on the court’s decision and considered the case still not final so Colombian Government still considers the border to be the meridian 82 that extends over the Nicaraguan Border. Therefore; the area has constant surveillance by the Colombian Navy

Serranilla Bank

Serrenilla Bank 🇨🇴 Colombia is in Good Nautical (SW CORNER)

There is a Colombian Army station in Serrenilla, 15 48.39N 79 51.17W but its not an actual port, has soldiers stationed there. There is a Frigate that is constantly patrolling the area. This Frigate has a helicopter onboard as well as fast boats. Any boat being harassed should contact the Operations Center of the Colombian Army in San Andres. As soon as you are close or in their jurisdiction, they will actually dispatch the helicopter if necessary. Its suggested to stay East of the Seranilla Bank as this way you remain in Colombian waters and the Colombian Navy (Armada Nacional de Colombia) can assist.

If you are leaving Providencia, or making landfall from the North into Providencia, its advised by the Colombian Navy that we report to them your intentions and cruising plan. (see contacts below) There is a report system established for the Colombian fisherman in the area, this allows the Colombian Navy to have the Map of the boats in the area, their locations and intentions. Reporting usually happens at 0600 and 1700. Contact the operations center and tell them you want to be added to the reporting Roster. If you are in need for shelter or anchor in Serranilla, it is possible. You cannot go inland, but you are welcome to anchor for a night or two to rest before continuing your journey. If you get close enough, they will contact you on your VHF 16, or, respectfully call them first and ask for authorization to anchor. Let you know your intentions.

They will give you further instructions.

Also, it may not appeal to all, but they suggest to keep our AIS on so marine control can track us while transiting the area.

8) SEA TRIAL 🇨🇺 CUBA

CUBA

After receiving authorization as required for American citizens and vessels, we arrived at Marina Hemingway on April 14th. The approach to the marina is quite easy. I recommend the Addison Chan Cuba Waterway guide which was spot on for navigation and also provides information regarding obtaining authorization from US officials.

Drinks

Unfortunately “tourism” is not an accepted reason to come but “for the benefit of the Cuban people” is. Be sure to give sufficient time after you apply for US officials to reply. Our reply took about 3 weeks.

HEMMINGWAY MARINA

Upon arrival at Marina Hemingway, one pulls up to the immigration dock to begin a 90 min + check in process. Everyone was very friendly and, while time consuming, the process was painless. We have a small dog which required nothing more than current vaccination certificates and a quick exam by the vet who comes to the boat.

Marina

The marina consists of 4 long channels about 100'. Our boat is 60’ long and when we left we had to turn around mid channel as there is no turning basin at the end. Everyone side ties but must be careful of rocks jutting out 3’ from the side wall perhaps 5’ below the water line especially if you have stabilizer fins like our big Nordhavn! There are modern electrical pedestals with very good power. Water (which is potable) on the other hand came on for perhaps only an hour daily. There are some shops within the marina but they were all closed during our stay so plan to bring what you need. Although we didn’t purchase any, fuel was available at around $4.00/gal (despite the shortage for the locals who get it at subsidized prices).

MONEY

There is another Marina as well: Marina Gaviota. Unfortunately, Americans are only to use it to check in/out and for fuel. Americans are not permitted to stay at this marina. For people of other nationalities the facilities look nice. Canadians are welcome. Marina Gaviota was built in 2018 by a European company apparently in anticipation of the embargo being lifted or at least eased under Obama (who was here with The Rolling Stones in 2019). The marina is huge and will accommodate up to 1000 boats mostly in a med moor configuration. Each slip has a top of the line pedestal for power and water and floating buoy to moor to. Because the use of the marina is restricted, the marina is mostly empty except for perhaps a dozen (if that) transient boats mostly Canadian.

Taxis

Taxies into Havana (old town and the area by the National Hotel) are almost always available. If not, the marina can find someone for about $20.00 for the 30 min ride. Once you have a driver, he will become your “best friend” while there. Keep his name and number.

Hemingway’s favorite bars for Mojitos, La Bodeguita and Daiquiris, El Floridita!

Hemingway’s favorite bars for Mojitos, La Bodeguita and Daiquiris, El Floridita!

Local currency (Cuban Pesos) can be changed “officially” at the rate of 120/$1 USD but most taxi drivers will exchange “unofficially” at $170-175 /$1 USD. Be careful on the street as this is not strictly legal.

Your marina bill, however, can only be paid at the official rate in dollars on a credit card (no cash) and US credit cards do not work in Cuba. Upon checkout, the marina will “find” a credit card belonging to someone to whom you pay USD cash who puts the bill on their card probably earning a small commission in the process. This was all done through marina officials and paid receipts provided. When in Rome!

When in Havana, dollars are accepted almost everywhere. Exchange perhaps $100 to have a bit of local currency and more if you need to later. Also come stocked with groceries as finding groceries is very difficult.

Havana

While we were inspected by agriculture, they did not take anything so long as we promised to keep all fresh food/eggs on board. A small “tip” was perhaps instrumental in this regard. Note that everyone (officials included) appreciated “tips” so bring some “extra” $5s and $10s.

Spent the day wandering around Old Town Havana. Beautiful city. The locals have a difficult time getting by. Fuel is in short supply with long lines for gas and not many tourists.

Also, if possible, stop at a dollar store in the US and bring plenty of small items for the locals. Toothpaste, deodorant, soap, Tylenol type pills, coloring books and crayons, and any similar items are much appreciated as these items are simply not available.

Havana

Havana is a very safe city. Obviously use common sense and wandering late at night down dark alleys is not recommended. Nevertheless, there is minimal crime based on my own observations and what we were told by locals. There are some amazing restaurants in Havana.

Bar

La Guarida in an old building on the rooftop was amazing. Google TripAdvisor or Yelp for many others. There are a lot of embassies you will drive past on the ride from the marina into the city which probably support these places along with the tourists who fly in daily from Florida for 24 hour tours.

Courtyard

Seeing the sights both with and with out a guide was easy and well worth the small hassles of getting here. Note that there is a fuel shortage so do not try to rent a car. There are long lines for gas lasting up to 48 hours and a 40 ltr limit! We hired an amazing guide who was recommended in Florida. His name is Ornelio; his contact is +53 5 2732440. Ornelio speaks fluent English and I highly recommend him. He will arrange a restored 1950s Chevy with driver for a reasonable fee and provide plenty of interesting information about the people and country. You can contact him in advance on WhatsApp.

We spent 1/2 day touring Havana and a full day to the Vinalas tobacco region about 3 hours outside of Havana.

Wandering Havana was also a highlight. Be sure not to miss Ernest Hemingway’s two favorite bars, La Bodeguita for Mojitos and El Floridita for Daiquiris. After knocking back 4 or 5 Mojitos at La Bodeguita I don’t exactly recall El Floridita (but my wife tells me it was fun)!

Plan on an entire day (or two) wandering Old Town Havana and be sure to check out the National Hotel which feels like stepping back into the 1950s. Go downstairs to the cigar bar for some good deals on tobacco products.

I can’t say enough about the Cuban people. The officials to the taxi drivers are uniformly friendly and will go out of their way to help you if they can. They are, through no fault of their own, living a very difficult life and doing their best. Cuba is described to us by almost everyone here a “complicated” and based on my limited time here I agree. Nevertheless, it is well worth the visit so long as you come without unrealistic expectations.

14) LAND TRIP:

NORTH FROM PUERTO MADERO

ON A THREE PART TOUR IN CHIAPAS 🇲🇽 MEXICO

Miguel and Tony lead fabulous, custom tours from Marina Chiapas. Their knowledge and passion for the area, culture, and history is extensive and engaging. Over the weekend they took 14 cruisers on a three part tour. The first stop was to Izapa, an archeological area dating back to the 1500's BC.

Izapa is considered by some archeologists to be the connective link between the earliest civilization in Mexico, the Olmec, and the early Mayans because of various images that are carved out of and into stones. Some theorize that the early Mayan calendar was developed in this area along with the Mayan creation story as written in the Popul Vuh. The site is laid out in relation to the volcano Tacaná which towers over the site to the north. Izapa is laid out on an east to west axis with a particular stone carving lined up with the December Solstice. The site has many different formations including pyramids, open mounds, a ball court corridor, and aqueduct stonework. In spite of the exhausting heat Miguel and Tony bring the stories and the possibilities from the past to life.

The area around Izapa is a major cacao producing area to this day. It is known as the Soconusco region and was used by the Aztecs. As much as we all love chocolate, this tour going group was intent on cooling off in the middle of the day before diving into the rich history and present state of chocolate in Chiapas. So it was off to a waterfall high in the mountains called La Sirena.

The trailhead at a bend in the road. Muranda and Yolanda savor the fresh air.

The road to the trailhead was an adventure in and of itself, winding steeply along hairpin turns into the clouds. Miguel and Tony generously brought fresh local mangos and an assortment of tamales wrapped in banana leaves. We hiked, we swam, we picnic'ed.

Miguel shoulders tamales and mangos to share at the falls.

Small falls on the way to Sirena.

La Sirena Falls

April is the hottest month of the year here in Chiapas so the pleasure of cooling down to a near-chatter in sweet mountain water was especially invigorating. The waterfall and pools were sweet and refreshing, crisp and cooooool! Everyone was beaming.

Our next stop was to the town Miguel grew up in, Tuxtla Chica, which is also home to Doña Josefina, a third generation chocolate producer. Doña Josefina welcomed us into her home, shop, and production space to teach us her chocolate making process. She has tropical evergreen cacao trees producing fruit in her yard. Miguel harvested a cacao fruit and we sampled the surprisingly sweet fruity case around the cacao seed. The seeds are dried and a husk is rubbed off before the seeds are roasted, ground, (occasionally) mixed with sugar and cinnamon, and finally shaped into pucks.

Preparing to grind the roasted cacao beans on the stone metate

With her mother and Grandmother looking on she advises, "It's all in the wrist."

The grinding releases an oil that allows the cacao to be formed into pucks.

We were treated to some delicious hot chocolate around her table alongside a mural that tells the story of the three generations in her family carrying on the traditions of making chocolate from their ancestors to the present. We talked about Mexican history and the significance of Cinco de Mayo coming up.

15) CINCO DE MAYO
🇲🇽

HISTORY, SIGNIFICANCE & CELEBRATION

In1861, Mexico declared a temporary freeze on the repayment of foreign debt so English, Spanish and French troops invaded. By early 1862 English and Spanish troops had withdrawn and French troops supported by wealthy landowners remained. The goal of the French was to establish a monarchy led by Maximilian of Austria and to keep a close eye on the United States.

The battle of Pueblo. Mexican artist Francisco de Paul Mendoza, 1902

Cinco de Mayo translates to and is celebrated on the fifth of May because this date is the anniversary of Mexico's victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. A poorly equipped, bold group of Mestizo and Zapotec forces were led by General Ignacio Zaragoza to fight against French domination. Even though the fighting continued and it was five years before the French were actually driven out of Mexico, on May 5th, 1862 over 1000 French troops were killed. The victory over the French army was a morale boost for the Mexicans.

CINCO DE MAYO

In the state of Puebla, people celebrate with parades, speeches, and reenactments of the 1862 battle. This is not Independence Day celebrated in mid September. Rather Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexican heritage, the struggle for democracy, and freedom from foreign domination.

SAILING FROM PANAMA TO 🇪🇨 ECUADOR

zero degrees off the coast of 🇪🇨 Ecuador

I got to be pulled across the equator.

This is a dream come true, we’re in Ecuador! We arrived at Puerto Amistad with our pilot. The entrance was quite surprising and had us about 50 meters from the beach at one point with a warm welcome from the beach goers. It was smooth coming in and we’ll stay tonight on Pathfinder to wait for all the officials to arrive on our boat for check in.

Following the pilot boat into port.

The track takes us close to the beach.

Elated upon this much anticipated arrival.

19) FORT JEFFERSON AND THE DRY TORTUGAS
FLORIDA 🇺🇸 USA

FORT JEFFERSON

Dry Tortugas and Fort Jefferson lies about 60 nm due west of Key West

Dry Tortugas Chart 11438

Dry Tortugas Chart 11438

The area was approached and attempted to be colonized in the early 1500 by European explorer Ponce de Leon who claimed for the Spanish despite native Calus people actively living on the islands. The Calus people fought and thwarted colonization efforts at this time.

In 1821 Spain sold Florida to the United States for $5 million (Florida Purchase Treaty which remained in full effect for a whopping 183 days) and about 5 years later lighthouse was constructed on Garden Key in the dry Tortugas.

300 years after Ponce’s discovery it was of course prisoners, soldiers and hundreds of slaves who built the park’s centerpiece Fort Jefferson which constitutes the largest all-masonry fortification in the Americas and is the largest brick masonry structure composed of over 16 million bricks. At 400 bricks per day it takes a lot of manpower ( 40,000 days to be exact ) to build as this building covers 16 acres. Among United States forts, only Fort Monroe in Virginia and Fort Adams in Rhode Island are larger.

Although the fort was never fully completed, it remained active throughout the Civil War and later housed prisoners – mainly Union deserters until 1873 – before being turned over to the Marine Hospital Service in 1888. The area around Fort Jefferson became a National Monument in 1935, and finally a national park in 1992.

The park can be reached only by boat or seaplane. Its waters contain abundant and varied marine life, including three species of sea turtles. Thousands of migrating birds stop at or nest on the islands. For Birders of note is a large flock of sooty terns that nests on Bush Key each spring and summer.

8 Boobie Birds on the Bow of Windsong en route to the Galapagos, 🇪🇨 Ecuador

While
crossing the equator and becoming shellbacks, there were uninvited
visitors aboard SY Windsong that made themselves very comfortable.

One stayed with us for over 350NM!

Though we loved them their poo was MOST DEFINITELY UNINVITED.

Nonetheless, the journey was spectacular.

Our
boat doesn't have a stern entry so we never had any sea lions try to
get aboard. We put out a paddle board to have sea lions playing around
our boat, we had a solid group that stayed with us during our time in
San Cristóbal.  These visitors were close enough to enjoy their
company and they courteously had there own place to poop that was not
offensive in the least.

5)  8 POSSE VESSELS CROSS THE TEHUANTEPEC  🇲🇽

12+
boats took a four day weather window to cross the Tehuantepec last
week.  Some left Thursday, some left Friday.  Together this
mini fleet sent notes to one another about longline locations they
encountered (see red dot above).   "The longlines were Right on the
Rum Line" Rolf described it.

Along
the different courses vessels took people saw schools of dolphin,
marlin jumping, sailfish, turtles, birds, and birds on turtles.

The
wind was favorable for a pleasant downwind run if you had a light
spinnaker.  Conditions also favored swimming and napping for those
crossing the bay.

All
in all a smooth and uneventful trip was had through the Golfo de
Tehuantepec to Marina Chiapas.  Spending time working on boats,
cooling off in the pool, and barbeque'ing are now high on the list for
this part of the Posse

Bahía
Drake (Drake Bay) is a genrious bay on the north side of the Osa
Peninsula and Corcovado National Park on the coast of southwestern Costa
Rica.  This bay is believed to be a port used by Sir Francis Drake
during his raids on the Spanish Main in the 16th century and the
location of one of the British pirate’s fabled hidden treasures.

The
bay is off the beaten track and can be reached by plane, boat, and car
(ideally a 4×4 vehicle) during the dry season. Because of lack of
bridges, driving to Bahía Drake is challenging and not recommended for
visitors.

This naturally restricted access makes being there that much more special.

Drake Bay is especially very extremely totally tropical

8) CULTURE: FESTIVAL DE DIABLOS Y CONGOS

PANAMA 🇵🇦 MAY 6TH 🇵🇦

Saturday
May 6th  the port city of Portobelo, Colon, Panama holds the
“Festival de Diablos y Congos.” This annual festival is one of
celebration and rebellion.  It is a unique local take on the
widespread Carnival tradition, a five-day party with no shortage of
loudspeakers, dancing — and devils wielding whips.

The
Casa de la Cultura Congo is an open public space that hosts workshops
and the creation of arts and crafts. Focusing on Congo art, the mission
of the Casa de la Cultura Congo is to exalt and express the importance
of the colonial Latin and African legacy in Portobelo, by bringing those
traditions to life through different creative expressions.

9) THE COMMON BLACK HAWK

The range of the Common Black Hawk is much like that of the Panama Posse.

 They
are predominately a coastal bird ranging from the Pacific and Atlantic
Coasts of Mexico south along Central America extending along the coast
of western Ecuador and northern Columbia.  This hawk is entirely
black with a distinct white band running horizontally along its tail,
yellow beak, legs, and feet.

10) LAND TRIPS FROM

PUESTA DEL SOL  🇳🇮 NICARAGUA

Puesta
del Sol is a wonderful, safe harbor in northern Nicaragua.  The
location is a great springboard for land trips.  Multiple posse
boats, some going North and some going south managed to be in Puesta del
Sol at the same time.

Volcano Boarding at Cerro Negra Volcano, Nicaragua

Each went off exploring the country, came together to enjoy each others
company and swap stories; three great things that make the Posse so
fun.

This was a long and arduous hike, gorgeous views, great fun.

The volcano is considered one of the youngest volcanoes in the world and is still active.

There are hot spots with new ash, and vents that are actively being monitored by experts.

Tacos out and about among the locals.

It is beautifully preserved and many famous Nicaraguan poets and bishops are entombed in this cathedral.

"Having
spent the last 11 years in the Virgin Islands and Eastern Caribbean
running charters aboard my Lagoon 410, Guiding Light, I have heard many
sailors talk about going to the Dominican Republic on their way to the
islands.

The
problem is that once you start talking to them about the DR, they tell
you they either spent the hurricane season in Luperon on the north coast
or they used the DR to get to the southern coast of Puerto Rico to
continue east to the islands. So few of them actually spent time
cruising the DR to get to know it and its people. This is a shame
because, while there are issues cruising the DR, there are also three
great cruising grounds to explore."  MORE AT

14)  ⚠️ SAFETY ALERT:

OFFSHORE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS

What is your offshore communication system?  Do you have redundancy in case one fails?

Last week the ocean communication system aboard SV Saisorse went
down while offshore.  The Iridium GO unit got wet and stopped
working.  Suddenly this safety net was no longer available.
No communication out or in, No calls, no weather downloads, no
emails, etc.

Similarly,
INMARSAT customers in the Western Pacific Ocean were down for 48 hours
this week due to software or hardware issues on the satellite itself.
A few weeks ago Starlink was down all over the world.

No system is without faults however.   HF Single-Sideband:
a tried-and-true direct communication option that is integrated into
the global maritime distress system and many sailors and commercial
vessels rely on.  However, these radios are affected by the
activity of the sun and depending on the suns affect on the ionosphere
one may or may not be able to communicate over the Single Side Band.

Communication options and the reasons driving redundancy in this safety system aboard your vessel vary - Link to Sea tech Article below

It’s the morning of April 18, and if you are an Inmarsat customer in the Western Pacific Ocean area, you have likely been offline for just about 48 hours so far. No calls, no weather downloads, no emails, etc.

15)  RIO CHAGRES 🇵🇦  PANAMA

RIO CHARGAS

This
side trip up the Rio Chagres is definitely worth it!  You enter
from the Atlantic side about 6 miles northwest of Shelter Bay.
Getting into the river we saw nothing less than 14 feet.
Once we were in the depth was pretty consistent 35-50 feet up to
the third bend.  You can follow the Rio Chagres all the way to a
dam on the canal.  This last part should be done carefully and by
dinghy; as you get near the dam it gets very rocky and shallow.

ALEBRIJES

Alebrijes
were originally created in the imaginative heart and mind of artist
Pedro Linares (1906-1992) in the 1930's.  Alibrijes are sculpted
creatures that seem to be born from real animals and become fantastical
creatures with intricately patterned bodies.  The creatures have
horns or wings or both, exaggerated teeth, eyes, ears, and/or claws.
They are a feast for the eyes, heart, and mind.

alebrije

A large and brightly colored alebrije in the window of a business in Oaxaca City

In
his early years, Linares started making alebrijes out of paper and
cardboard and selling them in the mercados in Mexico City.  His
work was discovered by a gallery owner who began selling his alibrejes.
Well known artists such as Diego Rivera and Frida Khalo began
commissioning alebrijes directly from Linares.  Linares soon
returned to his native village of Arrazola outside of Oaxaca City and
shared his designs with fellow artisan Manuel Jiminez.  Then and
there alebrijes were reborn among fellow Indigenous Zapotec woodcarving
artists who began carving Linares' inspired creatures out of copal wood
and painting them.  The unique and distinct artform became well
know throughout Mexico and abroad.

Today,
Alebrijes are still colorful and whimsical, intricately painted copal
wood carvings.  They have come to be among the most popular Mexican
folk art in the country.

6)  NEW COSTA RICA VESSEL TIP EXTENSION
AND SPECIAL PANAMA POSSE DEAL

MARINA PAPAGAYO  🇨🇷 COSTA RICA

MARINA PAPAGAYO 🇨🇷 COSTA RICA SPONSORS THE PANAMA POSSE

Marina
Papagayo is proud to continue our sponsorship of the Panama Posse fleet
for the 2022/2023 season.  The dockage discount for Posse members
is:

  • Stay three nights pay for two
  • Stay for a week and pay for five days
  • Stay for a month and pay the annual monthly rate
  • Complimentary drink coupons for the Dive bar on arrival

NEW BENEFIT: Marina Papagayo is offering great summer deal

Panama
Posse members have opportunity to stay for three months and get the
Fourth month free.  If members choose to stay longer the one free
month will still apply.   This will be given at the last month of
their stay.

Marina Papagayo explains Costa Rican Tourist TIP that allows vessels to extend their stay in Costa Rica beyond 90 days:

Costa Rica is now offering a Tourist TIP for a period of 6 month or one year
and is renewable for a maximum of two years.  The vessel must
still get the standard 90 day TIP on arrival and then this can be
converted to a Tourist TIP.   The advantages of this new Temporary Importation Permit
classification is that it allows duty free importation of spares.
When the Tourist Yacht TIP is in process there is the requirement
that Customs will inspect the boat and the owner or Captain of record
must be present for this inspection.  Finally there is a cost for
the agent to process this second permit.

Ultimately this is an easier process than the two year MOPT duty exoneration and has the benefit of the duty free spares.

8) EARLY SIGNS OF THE RAINY SEASON:

FLYING ANTS HATCH IN CHIAPAS  🇲🇽 MEXICO

Rainy
season in Mexico is more or less considered May thru November.
The early part of rainy season (April) dawns with certain hatches.
Enter the flying ant.

A SEASONAL DELICACY OR A PEST?

In short, it depends who you ask and more than likely how it is presented.

FLYING ANTS

A basket of smoked flying ants known as nuku

Flying ant found Cruising around in the galley of a cruising vessel last week in Marina Chiapas,  🇲🇽  Mexico

Mexico
has over 530 edible hopping and flying insects.  Over 155 of them
are found in the southernmost state of Chiapas.   As of mid April
this year, flying ants are just beginning to hatch in Chiapas.
Besides being found wandering in the galley, flying ants are a
seasonal part of peoples diet in Chiapas.   Apparently, one way or
another they may make their way to the galley.

The
preparation of nuku has been passed down for generations.  Flying
ants are collected in the forest, carefully seasoned, grilled or
toasted, and eaten or sold by weight as nuku.   As food the ants,
deliver vitamins, protein, and minerals as well as a unique flavor to
the palate.  For these reasons, nuku are as sentimental as they are
nutritious.

A
visit to the local mercado this time of year through the summer months
one can find nuku.  For some people in Chiapas nuku are a common
part of their diet during the rainy season.  Nuku is eaten with
tortillas, quesadillas, or tostadas.  Nuku is eaten on its own as a
snack and more recently can be found as a seasonal pizza topping.

After a morning spent cleaning both hulls Rochambeau is ready to cross the T'Pec

SY ROCHAMBEAU  🇺🇸   Rolf & Beverly –  Lagoon 39′

ROCHAMBEAU - BeverlyROCHAMBEAU - Rolf

Regardless
of when you and your vessel plan on crossing the Tehuantepec in
southern Mexico, it is best to proceed with caution.   Tehuantepec,
T'Pecker, or Tehuano wind, is a violent mountain-gap wind originating
with the trade winds in the Atlantic, traveling across the Caribbean
through to the Gulf of Mexico, squeezing through Chivela Pass and
dumping into the Pacific in the Gulfo de Tehuantepec.  These winds
can reach up to 70 knots and are not to be trifled with.  The
violent winds are most common between October and February, with a
summer minimum in July when hurricane season starts.

In
general, crossing the Tehuantepec will depend on your boat speed and
the “size” of the the Weather Window.  Ocean waves take about 6 –
12 hours to lay down so generally vessels only go straight across if
they have at least a 48 hour window.

Currently,
there are as many as12 Panama Posse boats plus a few others eyeing up a
four day weather window to cross the Tehuantepac over the weekend.
Some vessels plan to use the "one foot on the beach strategy" and
contour the coast, while others are planning to "shoot straight across".
Others, still, are planning some mix in between as the situation
unfolds.

Hugging the shore adds 60 NM to the trip but the upsides are:

  1. The ability for you to get live weather along the way
  2. The
opportunity to anchor along the way in somewhat protected and roadstead
anchorages.  Sleep is Good!  (LINK TO GOOD NAUTICAL ROADSTEAD
    ANCHORAGES)
  3. The opportunity to explore less visited places.

Hugging the shore is the more prudent choice as you can pick up 7 cellphone towers and update your weather forecasts.

tehuantepec

This weather window offers vessels the opportunity to choose their own adventure

Hug the shore, Shoot across, or something in between.

tehuantepec

It will be best to be out of the Gulf by Monday!

Shooting
Across is often chosen when the weather window is longer, the winds are
light to nill and the vessel wants to just get across more swiftly.

Whatever any vessel chooses may there be

FAIR WINDS AND FOLLWING SEAS

 for all crossing this weekend!

12) ⚠️ LONG LINES CATCH AND KILL:

WHAT TO KNOW AND LOOK OUT FOR

LONG LINES ARE ILLEGAL AND RESTRICTED IN AROUND THE WORLD...

WATCH OUT FOR THEM ALONG THE CENTRAL AMERICAN PANAMA POSSE ROUTE

longlines

By
definition, a long line is a monofilament fishing line stretched
between two buoys (which, depending on size and seastate, may or may not
be visible) with smaller lines hanging from the main line. Each smaller
line terminates at a baited, sometimes lighted or floating, hook.
According to NOAA, the average longlines in the US (where
longlines are illegal) are 28 miles long with 1000's of these smaller
lines and can soak for hours to days.  The lines are hung at
different depth depending on the target species the fisherman aim to
catch.

Long lines disrupt the ocean balance
by first catching fish on the lower end of the food chain such as
sardines, mackerel, squid, shark meat, or scad for bait.  Excluding
shark meat, the animals used as bait play a vital role in the marine
ecosystem providing food to larger fish and pelagic invertebrates.
The animals that prey on the sardines are predator species of
increasing size and strength.  When the bait fish are harvested
larger fish that are prey to even larger fish struggle to survive.

long lines

Longlines are a lethal weapon to the fish they seek and other marine animals
because they catch and kill marine life indiscriminately.  Most
longline crew are professional fisherman whose livelihood depends on
working well together in a highly coordinated to maximize their catch
and get as much to market as they can.  Recently, people have begun
using drones to spot fish and more precisely drop longline where fish
are.  Along the Pacific Coast between Mexico and Panama target
species include: tuna, halibut, swordfish, and sablefish.
Byproducts include highly sought after mahi-mahi.

long line view underwater

While
longline fishing does not kill as many fish as deep sea trawling,
Longlines catch and or kill many more marine animals than they target.
These animals are called "bycatch"
; they can be
searbirds or sharks to aquatic mammals.  Along the Pacific Coast
between Mexico and Panama marine animals can get hooked or entangled in
the lines.  For animals such as birds, sea turtles, or dolphins:
getting trapped underwater unable to surface for breath is a death
sentence.  It is estimated that 300,000 seabirds (including
100,000 albatross) die on longlines each year.  A recent
estimate of the total marine bycatch discarded was more than 30 million
tons per year, or about one-third of the yearly total catch.

fish for sale

How did these fish get to market AND what can cruisers do?

  1. Knowing
and sharing information about what longlines are and what to look out
for helps bring awareness to the pressures that the fishing industry is
putting on our oceans.  Report Longlines here:    LINK TO LONG LINES REPORT ON POSSE WEBSITE
  2. Knowing
where the fish in you fish taco comes from can help too.  Buying
fish directly from fisherman or fish markets that you know how they get
their catch will support better fishing methods.  Do not support
longlining with the fish you consume.  The most sustainable fishing
method to support is rod and reel fishing.
  3. Some private vessels choose to install longline cutting devises to their boats:

White
plastic insulators have been used together with high voltage Hotshock
units. We felt this was necessary as there would only be one chance to
belt the attacker coming over the side so the 10000 v kick would prove a
substantial deterrent. This may be connected to an alarm that would
sound a siren when tampered with.

A
physical test was carried out and it is very difficult to maintain a
hold when the shock kicks in. The worst was when climbing out of water
as this was connected to the railings creating a direct link for the

10) METEROLOGY TROPICAL WAVES

TROPICAL WAVES

Tropical waves spin with energy in the atmosphere and spread from Africa across the Atlantic.

A
tropical wave (also called easterly wave, tropical easterly wave, and
African easterly wave), in and around the Atlantic Ocean, is a type of atmospheric trough,
an elongated area of relatively low air pressure, oriented north to
south, which moves from east to west across the tropics, causing areas
of cloudiness and ..

Another

Tropical
waves in the Atlantic basin develop from low-pressure disturbances,
which develop as far east as Sudan in east Africa, and drift across the
continent into the Atlantic Ocean. These are generated or enhanced by
the African Easterly Jet. The clockwise circulation of the large
transoceanic high-pressure cell or anticyclone centered near the Azores
islands (known as the Azores High) impels easterly waves away from the
coastal areas of Africa towards North America.

They are often monitored for development into a tropical storm or hurricane.

Tropical
waves are the origin of approximately 60% of Atlantic tropical cyclones
and of approximately 85% of intense Atlantic hurricanes (Category 3 and
greater)

Tropical
cyclones can sometimes degenerate back into a tropical wave. This
normally occurs if upper-level wind shear is too strong. The storm can
redevelop if the upper-level shear abates.

Hurricane Irma

Hurricane
Irma was an extremely powerful hurricane that caused widespread
destruction across its path in September 2017. Irma was the first
Category 5 hurricane to strike the Leeward Islands on record.  Irma
started off the east coast of Africa and was predicted to become a
hurricane whose path crossed over the Carribean en route to southern
Florida for several weeks before Irma actually hit.

Panama Posse boats are now anchored in beautiful Ensenada Naranjo on
mainland Panama. Holding is good, all 3 boats held fast on the first
try. Depths are different from what navionics portrays. There is a
gradual slope towards the shore and a large flat area in the 20 foot
range. The site is beautiful and there are a few pangas about. There is a
light breeze that keeps us cool and no swell at this time. Great
location.

12) Simón Bolívar (1783-1830)

ALSO KNOWN AS: EL LIBERTADOR

-

Simon Bolivar

Simón
Bolívar is a vital figure in the history of independence in South
America.  He is and was loved and loathed by many as he spent
almost half his life engaged and entrenched in the fight for
independence against the Spanish Empire in the continent of South
America during the early 1800's.  He was very influential in
gaining independence for Bolivia, Panama, Peru, Columbia, Venezuela, and
Ecuador.

young Bolivar and his wife

Simón Bolívar was born in Caracas, now Venezuela, to a wealthy family in 1783.

By
his mid 20's Simón Bolívar had travelled from Caracas to Spain,
England, France, and Italy.  He mingled among the elite and the
leaders.  He learned about many struggles and revolutions whereby
people were fighting for their independence from external rule and
taxation.  In 1807, around the same time Napolean and his army
invaded Spain, Bolivar returned to his home country, joined a resistance
movement, and began his quest to free Latin America from Spanish rule.
Simón Bolívar was but one visionary among many revolutionary
leaders.  As with many developing nations, the revolutionaries did
not always see eye to eye in their vision for the new nation and its
people.  As such, his dream to unite the region which proved very
difficult as there were many opposing factions and revolutionaries
fighting in many different ways for their rights within the great land
mass.

Simon Bolivar

"When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes a right."

-Simón Bolívar

statue of Simon Bolivar

Simón
Bolívar died at the age of 47..  He is said to have died from
tuberculosis.  However, in his life, Bolívar made as many friends
as he did enemies and his illness was considered mysterious at his time
of death.  There is speculation that his death may have been more
complicated.  Nonetheless, t
he memory and influence of Simón Bolívar, The Liberator, is honored to this day in many locations throughout South America.

Sloth

A
nature adventure near Panama City can be found at the Gamboa Rainforest

enjoyed all the amenities…including the giant swimming pool!.

There
are also stunning views of the Chagres River and all kinds of nature
tours including the sloth sanctuary (swooning still over the rescue

have been wanting to really see sloths up close and I got my wish.

15) LEAVING  🇲🇽  MEXICO

WHAT IS REQUIRED?

AND...WHAT IS ON THE SHOPPING LIST?

Mexican flag

There
are distinct legal entry and exit requirements in every country.
Some are the same and some are different.  Most ports can
handle international Zarpes (exit documents).

The requirements to exit Mexico are as follows:

  • Assemble all necessary documents including:
    • Valid TIP (Temporary Import Permit of your vessel)
      • It
is important to decide whether your vessel under your ownership will be
returning to Mexico within the timeframe that it is valid.  If
unsure or not returning, include cancelling vessel TIP in your procedure
        below.
    • Vessel Documentation
    • Mexican Liability Insurance
    • Valid Visas and passports for every crew member
    • Crewlist with all names, passport numbers, age, and date of birth
    • Entrance paperwork from the Port Captain in your final Mexican Port
    • Boating
Credential or Certification (including but not limited to State Safe
Boating Card, Merchant Marine Documents, or Captains License)
  • Visit the Port Captain, Immigration, and Customs.
  1. Complete the Crew List for exiting Mexico with the Port Captain (the “Despacho”, formally known as a “Zarpe”);
  2. Go to the Immigration Office to get the Crew List Stamped and surrender the FFM forms; and
  3. Go
to the Port Captain’s Office again and pay the Vessel’s Check-out fees
and have the crew list stamped with the authorization to exist the
    country of Mexico.
  4. Go to Customs office and Banjercito with
all vessel and crew documents to cancel TIP ( 10 year temporary import
permit ) before departure if not returning to Mexico before your 10 year
TIP EXPIRES - if you try to re-enter Mexico with an expired TIP you
will have a lot of issues and will need an agent $$$ to clear the prior
    TIP.
  • Expect to be boarded by the Navy with Dogs for your final vessel review.  This may or may not happen, but it is to be expected.  Upon inspection vessels are expected to leave straightaway.

MAKE PANAMA 🇵🇦 SAFE(R) FOR CRUISERS

Crimes against Cruisers

FOR A PARTIAL LISTING OF CRIMES AGAINST YACHTS IN PANAMA FOLLOW THIS LINK https://safetyandsecuritynet.org/category/reports/panama/

Panama
is currently is one of the least safe destination for cruisers in
Central America  (3 armed robberies/boardings in two months, on
both coasts)

No other country reports more than minor thefts off of unattended boats.

Lack of transparency
irregular
fee collection at port captains, poor service and high fees (cruising
permits take too long, attempted bribery in Bocas, most expensive
country in Central America).

Publish fee schedule on internet, follow Panama Canal best practices for fee changes (advance notice, public comment/input, clear fee schedule).

Thanks to the Panama Marina Association
we have an ongoing dialogue to improve safety and communications for
all yachts in Panama - our next meeting is in 2 weeks - if you have any
suggestions or comments please email

20)  MUST SEE GRANADA 🇳🇮  NICARAGUA

Granada, Nicaragua

Granada
is a stunning city on the shores of Lake Nicaragua and historically one
of Nicaragua’s most important cities, economically and politically.

Granada, Nicaragua

It’s home to multiple Spanish colonial landmarks that have survived repeated pirate invasions.

Lake Nicaragua

Granada,
Nicaragua was the sister capital to Antigua in Guatemala. During the
colonial period, Granada maintained a flourishing level of commerce with
ports on the Atlantic Ocean, through Lake Nicaragua ( Lago Cocibolca)
and the San Juan River. As such the city was victim to many battles with
invasions from English, French and Dutch pirates trying to take
control  by sailing up the San Juan River.

lake nicaragua

Located on the banks of Lake Nicaragua, Granada is quickly becoming a central hub for excursions to other areas of Nicaragua and Central America.

OLLIES BREAK

Ollie's Point is a right point break that is named after Colonel Oliver North
who   made his base there during the Nicaraguan civil war between
the Contras and the Sandanistas during the 80's. In late 1985,
Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North of the National Security Council
diverted a portion of the proceeds from the Iranian weapon sales to fund
the Contras, a group of anti-Sandinista rebels, in their insurgency
against the socialist government of Nicaragua. It's 17 nm as the crow
flies from the border with Nicaragua facing Bahia Potrero Grande a wide
and easy sloping protected bay with exposure to W, SW and S Swells.

When
this wave is at it's best, it is an excellent, fast, hollow wave.
Ollie's is at it's best at low to medium tide with a strong south swell.

There is no access road to the point and is only accessible by boat.
