11) The Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos)

.. is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, in particular the Central and South regions, and by people of Mexican heritage elsewhere. The multi-day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and helping support their spiritual journey. In Mexican culture, death is viewed as a natural part of the human cycle. Mexicans view it not as a day of sadness but as a day of celebration because their loved ones awake and celebrate with them

Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars called ofrendas, honoring the deceased using calaveras, aztec marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts. Visitors also leave possessions of the deceased at the graves. Scholars trace the origins of the modern Mexican holiday to indigenous observances dating back hundreds of years and to an Aztec festival dedicated to the goddess Mictecacihuatl. It has become a national symbol and as such is taught (for educational purposes) in the nation's schools.

We visited in November, the water was clear and warm (no jelly fish).
The anchorages were calm (except for the lightning) and very quiet.

4) Notes on the Papagayos, Nicaragua & Northern Costa Rica
Avant won’t make the call today, we will be seeking radiator hose in the thriving metropolis of
Cocos la Playas Costa Rica to repair our engine (again - seems we’re replacing it part by part this week!).

A few tips from our southbound passage through the papagayos:

Plan on poor boat speed/ fuel economy. The wind chop stole about 15-20% of our typical boat speed,
resulting in longer than usual passages and a corresponding reduction in out typical miles per gallon.

Get some cycling glasses if you can. With the spray and wind, keeping watch for lobster pots and fishing
lines to windward is hard. Dodgers salt up with the spray, so you will be looking around them.
When the sun is up sunglasses work, but the clear glasses cyclists wear are great when the light is lower.

Chapstick. You want some. The conditions for chapping lips are ideal.

Check your heavy air setup. Twice. We haven’t sailed with a double reefed main for years, so we were
glad we had double checked that all lines were good to go before we deployed.

Our passage was easy and trouble free, and we hope we don’t sail to windward again any time soon.

5) Caleta de Campos and Isla Grande, MX

Passage Notes:
Heading south from Barra de Navidad towards Ixtapa/Zihuatenejo we hugged the coastline (3nm out) and encountered a series of long lines around Manzanillo and again approaching Ixtapa. In a personal best we managed to snag on two of them in a row, giving us great practice on getting free. One was attended by a panga, one had flags, and one just had a series of white floats a long distance apart. The white floats look just like white caps, so keep an eye out. We draw 7' with our daggerboards down, so after snagging on the second line with them fully down we pulled the boards up to about 4' and were able to float over the rest.

We encountered a 2 knot current out of the south that slowed our south-bound passage dramatically. Your results may vary since we were taking the coastal hugging route.

Caleta de Campos

Caleta de Campos is a fantastic, easy, and pretty anchorage with great sand holding in
20' in the middle of the bay and a lively palapa strewn beach.
The seas were essentially flat for our visit so we were quite comfortable,
but it is wide open with minimal protection so definitely consider it a fair-weather anchorage.

Coconut shrimp and posse shirt at isla grand.jpg
Isla Grande was fabulous as usual. Very busy this time of year with lots of boat parties
and a packed beach. It reminded us a lot of Avalon on Catalina Island in the summer.

Isla Grande
The powerboats have completely taken over and will anchor a boat length apart,
so we took in most of our chain to ride on a short scope during the day to allow them room.
They pretty much all took off just after sunset so we let out chain again
once they departed and slept easy in an empty anchorage.

Sunset at Isla Grande
Sunset

anchorage
Ricardo from Lili Cipriani restaurant came around both days we were anchored at
the island in his panga taking orders for lunch and dinner. It was so much fun to have
freshly prepared seafood delivered to the boat just in time for sunset.
He told us to call on 16 if we needed something, but we had no trouble flagging
him down during his rounds. We highly recommend ordering from him during your stay.

7) Counterposse Honuras to Panama & Panama Canal North to South

This report will have to be dissected in reverse because most of the Posse is transiting to the Caribbean.
Here is an update and some info from Sailing catamaran Saltair3 from Panama on the Pacific side.
After 5 years of sailing and visiting almost all of the islands in the Caribbean we made our decision to transit the canal and cruise the Pacific.

Trio

We arrived at ShelterBay marina on December 6th. We had been hurricaning the boat in the beautiful Rio Dulce of Guatemala.
We started our journey from Fronteras, the small town at the head of the Rio Dulce. The journey down the Rio Dulce is amazing and I hope many of you get the chance to do it. It’s 25 miles one way up the Rio to one of the many marinas located near Fronteras.
Leaving Guatemala for Belize is just a days sail away and much the same for Honduras and the Bay Islands.

After much conversation and a few meetings with a group of fellow sailors regarding the safety and security from Piracy in the area, we left for the Bay Islands. The concern is for the area off eastern coast of Honduras and Nicaragua. Known for Piracy we chose to sail with a few other sailboats for safety. You can find more information on the Piracy issue in the Rio Dulce Facebook group.
Our final push off was from Guanaja, one of the Honduras Bay islands and after 4 nights
and almost 5 days we arrived at ShelterBay.

ShelterBay is a good marina with a nice pool, and the marina manager Juan is a great guy
and does an excellent job of keeping cruisers happy. There isn’t really much to share about
that marina that you won’t easily find when you check in so I won’t bother.
There is an anchorage outside of the marina if you do not want to check into the marina but
to dock your dinghy at Shelterbay marina it is $12 per day. Ouch.
Watch out for the crocodile lying daily in the sun on the southern shore. I think there is two!
One of them approach us in the dinghy when we were still oblivious to the crocs.
We dinghies near our boat which is where it hangs out! I don’t think it was too happy
we were so close to its hang out! It did circle and come at us from out of nowhere,
that’s when I immediately motored away…
Trio

A walk outside of the marina towards the jungle and you will see Sloths and Toucans
as well as a World War bunkers and such. It is a great walk and well worth the effort.
You can do it yourself easily.
The aren’t any crocs here and you will feel a little like Indian Jones.

Trio

We had an amazing and incredibly exciting transit through the Panama canal.
All of our crew were friends and everyone of them had dreams of one day transiting.
I can honestly say it was much more than any of us expected. Incredible experience!
Be sure and get someone to check the web cam and capture your transiting!

Trio

I won’t go into the transit experience but to say, keep an eye on your 125' foot line if you are a line handler!
It’s not something you can get distracted from.

trio

When we came out to the Pacific side we disembarked our Advisor just outside of
the canal markers and inside the Balboa mooring field. You must always be outside of
the Red and Green markers after your advisor leaves or you will be in trouble!
You can anchor here or get a mooring. We still had daylight and chose to continue the
6-7 more miles to Las Brisas anchorage with Panama city in the background.
The Balboa mooring field and anchorage is rolly due to tug and freighter traffic constantly moving past.
Las Brisas has an incredible view of Panama city. While we were here fireworks went off from the
city at one of the parks along the malecon.
The anchorage is about 3/4 of a mile from the city but the view was still awesome!

Trio

The holding here is good in a thick mud like sand. The wind blows from the North
most of the time and there is always plenty of room in the anchorage. It’s huge.
You will need to wash the boat after a week though, as the smog from the city
likes to leave a thin film on your boat. Just walk around with a wet foot or two and
you will see the dark foot prints you will leave behind as the film comes
together in the water from your foot.

trio

There is a good dinghy dock here now and it is run by the Aeronaval guys.
They are always present and in full uniform. Captain Alex is a Panamanian in charge of h
elping cruisers and he keeps an office right at the top of the dinghy dock ramp. He is not AeroNaval.
To find the dinghy dock look for the large aviation style hangar and at it’s base is the dock.
There seems to always be a large yacht tied up to the Aeronval portion of the dock.
You will easily figure out where to dock the dinghy when you get close to it.
Be sure and wear a life Jacket (Salvabidas) and a T-shirt or you may not be allowed to dock your dinghy.
Panama has a dress code and the Naval guys in full uniform don’t like seeing us in less than a T-shirt and shorts. No bikinis either.
We used our cruise ship style key stone life jackets so we could leave them in the dinghy and not be too worried about them being stolen
but Captain Alex and the Naval guys keep a close eye on the dock at least during daylight hours.
We still lock our dinghy with a decent length so our dinghy can be moved if someone needs to tie their dinghy up too.
Don’t leave you engines up either.
It does get crowded at the dinghy dock and you will probably have to crawl on
someone else's dingy to get back onto the dock especially in low tide when the dinghy space shrinks a lot!

trio

If you haven’t got it already then go and download the UBER app. There are lots of taxis in
Panama but they are in rough shape and if you can believe it, they charge more than what
UBER charges and they have no qualms about driving through the "Red Zone” to get you to your destination.
Red Zone = very impoverish area of the city.
Uber cars are always nice clean cars with great air conditioning.
It is very HUMID here and air conditioning is a must in a car stuck in the crazy Panamanian traffic.
One local business man told me every one in Panama has a car Lol! It shows.

trio

There is potable water at the dinghy dock and it tastes pretty good. The hose is at the
top of the ramp and you can get Cpt Alex to toss it down to your jugs waiting in your dinghy.
Careful don’t lean on the metal bar style fence. I did and fell off the edge! Only ended up with a cut on my foot luckily.
Below is a photo of the dinghy dock and the motor yacht that is moored at the Naval end of the dinghy dock.
We have made water in the anchorage but it isn’t very clean looking.
We have swam in the anchorage due to the high heat and humidity but it isn’t very clear water to swim in.
Just 8 miles West is Isla Taboga. The anchorage is quite deep, we’re currently here anchored in 50 feet
and there are quite a few private mooring balls taking up anchorage space,
but right now we total three boats at anchor here and the water is nice and clear and the town small, quaint and cute.
trio

The dinghy dock at the Aeronaval dock in Las Brisas anchorage Panama city with the yacht tied up.

There is a commercial area up at the top of the ramp with a mini market, multiple restaurants and Pizza.
The mini market has lots of groceries and drinks including liquor but no fresh fruit or veg.
There is a nice park up there too with a nice long walkway around the whole bay.
There are bike rentals and scooter rentals and even four wheeled bike rental for up to 6 people!

Diesel is available at both local marinas. Marina Flamenco and Marina La Playita.
We found La Playita 25 cents cheeper than Flamenco but La Playita does not have gasoline,
ONLY diesel and you must make a reservation to come to the dock to fill up.
Water is free to fill up with at the same time. Flamenco marina does not need
a reservation but you need to call them on channel 10 before entering, They will answer.
Moorage is expensive, at least to this sailing family.
$150 for your first night no matter what length and then $2 per foot per night.

trio

Laundry pick up is available but there aren’t any laundry machines around for do it yourself washing.
I don’t know the price exactly but it seems very similar to all the other places we’ve had laundry done.
We do have a small laundry machine onboard.
Here is a phone number for the Laundry guy, a very nice young Chinese man that doesn’t really speak English,
but is fluent in Spanish. I’m sure he speaks Chinese too.
His name is Moises.

With this number comes a recommendation to get the WhatsApp App. Everyone in the Caribbean uses Whats App.
This is his WhatsApp number +507 6481-2611 The laundry is called Freeway Laundry.

trio

Below is a picture of Isla Taboga anchorage at low tide just 8 miles from the Las Brisas anchorage.

Albrook Mall (one L) is a good place to go check out.
Good shoes and an Explorers attitude helps! It is a HUGE mall.
There is a large and good grocery store there called Super Extra,
and upstairs by the Theatres is a Do It Yourself hardware store.
Lots of clothing stores here mostly name brand stores with good selection
and big department stores of mostly made in China stuff.
An Uber from Las Brisas to Albrook is less than $5.00 for up to four people.

trio

You can get a bus but you first need to get a transit card. Yay can get this at the
Cinco De Mayo Metro station. Rides after that on the very clean buses are just 25 cents
and the very clean Subway is just 35 cents for one way trips of any length,
at least that’s what we found on the subway. We rode it end to end on one of the two lines.
It does go above ground for some of the trip but the scenery is mostly city residential,
otherwise it’s a true SubWay. You will see many vendors selling fruit and vegetables
(above ground portion,) while on the subway and at Cinco De Mayo station.
It’s a little cheaper at these stalls and they tend to have more selection if you can believe it.
There is tons more info but the new Panama guide PDF shares all of that information.
This is just our first hand info that I wanted to share.
We have done one quick motor sailing trip to the Las Perlas islands with our
Panama Canal crew, but it was short and I don’t have any pictures. Sorry. Soon we will hove some.

The islands are definitely worth the trip of about 35 miles from Ls Brisas.
Isla Contadora is difficult to anchor at with so many private moorings there but Isla Chapera
was easy with good north protection, good holding, a couple of beautiful beaches, a jungle trail,
great snorkelling with lots of fish and corals and the site of the Survivor series.
Isla Mogo Mogo is also right there to explore.
Those are the only islands we have done so far but we will be back before heading North to Mexico.

trio

Propane is the last thing I have to share.
In Panama they use a different fitting. I have asked many people about how to fill our
bottles and where to get another bottle that would have our North American fittings.
Best way is to take an Uber to La Loceria Tropigas station. Uber took almost
30 minutes to find the station and it cost us just $9 US for the three of us.
Seems super cheap to me and in a nice car too!

You will have to leave your tank with them for a minimum of 2 days.
Over the holidays we have to wait 5-7 days. Then you have to go back and pick it up.
There seems to be no other way. It has to go all the way out to Chilibre for filling.
That’s along the number 9 highway on this map below if you wonder where Chilbre is.
They did tell me that I should be able to get a new North American propane tank at
Do It Yourself hardware store if I wanted another one. I have yet to check.

Well that’s it from the cockpit of Saltair3 on a hot and humid day! Time for a swim here at Isla Taboga.
I hope everyone has a safe and adventurous Panama Posse voyage!
Buen viaje everyone!

SHIPPING INTO PANAMA INFO
Note: DESTINATION I had success shipping 3 ac compressors, air handlers, controls etc from Ft Laud to Vista Mar recently.
Kings Marine did a great job. They have a relative on ground in Colon that delivered packages to marina.
Not sure what equipment they will ship. Attached is their contact info. Gal's name in FT Lauderdal is Marina.
Not a quick process. Took 2 weeks compounded by holidays.

Note: KNOT RIGHT any one else needing items delivered to them via carrier or mail.
UPS does not deliver to Vista Mar, they contract with a third party.
I believe that DHL does come out that far.
The significance of that is there is an additional charge for customs which needs to be collected on receipt.
But UPS will not do that through a third party. With them you have to deposit money into their banks account
and email the receipt to the releasing agent in Panama city for them to send via a third party.
But the bank no longer has a branch in Coronado. So someone has to drive to the bank (don't know where the closest one is).
Cesar was able to do this for me when my debit card was fowarded from my home.
It took 5 weeks, misplaced, many phone calls to the one UPS person that spoke English.
So avoid UPS. Now, if you have been at Vista Mar for awhile, then you know about
Mail Boxes Etc in Coronado. Set up an account with them. Then have everything sent (snail mail, FedEx, UPS, Amazon...

11) Ordering parts to Acapulco, MX

In March 19 our older Raymarine wind instruments failed. We found the parts and part
number from RayMarine. Confirmed with Raymarine that they were in stock.
We needed a reliable dealer between Barra and Acapulco to order and receive them for us.
We made many inquiries before finding Compass yachts in Acapulco (office at the yacht club).
Cinthia spoke and wrote English well. Super helpful.
I think it took about a week to order, ship, pass customs and get to Compass yachts.
They new how to do the customs paperwork, as they are a dealer.
Anyway shipping was not outrageous, but as expected for air.
They didn’t take cc, bank xfer or cash. Since they are at the yacht club and we were staying at marina Acapulco,
we couldn’t get passed the yacht club security. We just called Cinthia and she met us at the gate.

5) Vista Mar Fuel Price, PANAMA

We fueled up at Vista Mar a week ago and the price for Diesel was 2.83$ per Gallon. Gas for the dinghy was 3.20$.
Lots of room for your boat.
Hope that helps.

We cleared out of Vista Mar and have spent the last week getting to Costa Rica.    No problems with that other than getting to Flamenco Marina to do the Paperwork. Unless you want to use an agent.

Cab ride From Vista Mar to Coronado is 6$. Plus Bus ride of 1.5-2.0 hrs to Allbrook Mall then 10 min 5$ cab ride to Flamenco Marina.
Cheers from

6) Punta Mala, Panama
Sailed from the Perlas around Punta Mala last night and this morning to Punta Venau.  Forecast was for about 17-20 from the north with seas to 4 ft on about 6 second periods.  Forecast was about right, but we saw winds to 25 and max seas to maybe 8 ft (forecasts are for average seas I think).  Anchored now in Punta Venau—very pleasant with a wind from shore at 15-20, not at all rolling.  Sharing this info for others who might be on the reverse posse.  These conditions would be terrible for heading to the canal, but for the other direction the conditions were close to ideal.  Did I mention the clear skies and a moon that didn’t set until 4 AM?

7) Acapulco, MX
Hi Posse! It's been a slow start to 2020 for Gargoyle and her crew as we're in Acapulco getting a few issues we've put off taken care of before heading south. Our deep freeze has been giving us problems all last year before it died all together in November. Also, we noticed that the engine was running warm under load and diagnosed a raw water pump issue as well as heat exchanger in need of service. Luckily we've located both a great mechanic as well as refrigeration team here through Luis at La Marina Acapulco.

Aca

Diesel mechanic - Oscar from Nautical Boat shop 714 182 6205 Refrigeration - Contact Ramon 744 587 8575. He's more the catch-all guy that helps source services and is also fluent in English. Language is worth mentioning as you won't find English as readily spoken here as in other places so get your Google Translate app ready.  We've also used Vincente, mentioned in many posts and found him to provide great service for fuel, laundry and random tasks such as locating an odd sized battery for our voltmeter.

We've passed the time exploring this city and meeting some great people. Highlights have been the cliff divers viewed at night from La Perla restaurant and the museum at Fort San Diego.

Acapulco

One note for anyone planning to use La Marina Acapulco. They tend to put transients on the outside face docks and when the overnight winds shift to the north you can really get tossed around. We've seen a number of boats tossed hard against the dock as the waves are breaking over the docks. Recommend spring lines and plenty of well placed large fenders! That said, the amazing swimming pool here helps offset the few rough evenings we've had and the grocery store right across the street is a joy. Especially the fresh sushi in the fish department which is a welcome treat. Taxis are easily flagged outside the main gate. Recommend the old VW Beetles for a real throwback treat. Finally, if anyone has pets in need of vaccinations, we found a fantastic vet that makes boat calls to the marina. Yes, they actually came to us and updated Sam and Dean's rabies vaccinations. Now that's great service!

Vet

Vet - Clinica Veterinaria Bichos Acapulco - you can find them on Facebook and they use Whatsapp to communicate.  All in all we've really enjoyed the big city life of Acapulco and highly recommend a visit.

Adventure Scientists

Adventure
Scientists is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports
scientists through the planning and execution of large-scale data
collection projects for scientific partners around the world. They
mobilize skilled adventure volunteers—hikers, sailors, skiers, divers,
and more—who operate on any scale from almost anywhere on Earth to
collect high-quality scientific data. This empowers scientists to think
bigger and access the data, public support, and funding they need to
achieve impact. Adventure Scientists’ goal is to accelerate
environmental and human health solutions.

Mexico’s Pacific Coast is home to some of the world’s most biodiverse coral reefs, underwater communities that support sharks, turtles, and other marine life. They also support human lives by buffering the coastline from intense storms and providing livelihoods from fishing and tourism. Yet these reefs are imperiled by ocean acidification, more frequent and powerful storms due to climate change, and damage from human overuse.

1) Drunken Sailor

What should we do with a drunken sailor? (x3)

Early in the morning.

Chorus:

Way, hey, and up she rises. (x3)

Early in the morning

Shave his belly with a rusty  razor. (x3)

Early in the morning.

Chorus

Put him in a longboat till he’s sober. (x3)

Early in the morning.

Chorus

Put him in the hold with the captain’s daughter. (x3)

Early in the morning.

Chorus

That’s what we do with a drunken sailor. (x3)

Early in the morning.

Chorus

2) Randy Dandy

Now we are ready to sail for the horn,

(Way, hey, roll and go!)

Our boots and our clothes, boys, are all in the pawn.

(To me rollicking randy dandy, Oh!)

Chorus:

Heave a pawl, O heave away.

Wey, hey, roll and go!

The anchors on board and the cable’s all stored,

To me rollicking randy dandy, Oh!

Soon we’ll be warpin’ her out through the locks,

Where the pretty young girls all come down in their frocks.

Chorus

Man the stout caps’n and heave with a will,

Soon we’ll be draving her way down the hill.

Chorus

We’re outward bound for Vallipo Bay,

Get Cracking me lads, it’s a hell of a way.

Chorus

3) Rio Grande

We were sick on the beach and our money was gone,

(‘Way for Rio.)

So we signed on this packet to drive her along.

(And we’re bound for the Rio Grande.)

Chorus:

So away, bullies away.

Away, for Rio.

Sing fare thee well, my Liverpool girls,

And we’re bound for the Rio Grande.

We’re a deep water ship and a deep water crew,

We can keep to the coast but I’m damned if we do.

Chorus

So, heave up the anchor, let’s heave it away,

It’s got a good grip, bullies, heave her all day.

Chorus

And farewell to you all the girls of the town,

It pains me to leave you gals with a frown.

Chorus

4) Liverpool Judies*

From Liverpool to Frisco a-roving I went,

And to stay in that country was my good intent,

But drinking strong whiskey like other damn fools,

Well I soon got transported back to Liverpool

Chorus:

And it’s Roll! Roll bullies roll!

Them Liverpool Judies have got us in tow.

A smart Yankee packet lies out in the bay,

A-waiting a fair wind to get underway,

With all of her sailors so sick and so sore,

They’d drank all their whiskey and can’t get no more.
Chorus

Oh, here comes the mate in a hell of a stew,
He's lookin' for work for us sailors to do,
Oh, it's "Fore tops'l halyards!" he loudly does roar,
And it's lay aloft Paddy, ye son-o'-a-whore.
Chorus

One night of Cape Horn I shall never forget,
'Tis oft-times I sighs when I think of it yet,
She was divin' bows under with her sailors all wet,
She was doin' twelve knots with her mainskys'l set.
Chorus

And now we've arrived at the Bramleymoor Dock,
And all them flash judies on the pierhead do flock,
The barrel's run dry and our five quid advance,
And I guess it's high time for to get up and dance.
Chorus

Here's a health to the Captain wherever he may be,
A bucko on land and a bully at sea,
But as for the first mate, the dirty ol' brute,
We hope when he dies straight to hell he'll skyhoot.

Chorus

* Judy is a Liverpool term just meaning a young woman

5) All for me Grog

Chorus:

And it’s all for me grog, me jolly, jolly grog,

It’s all for me beer and tobacco.

For I spent all me tin on the lassies drinking gin,

Far across the western ocean I must wonder.

Where are me boots? Me noggin, noggin boots,
They’re all sold for beer and tobacco.
For the heels they are worn out, and the toes are kicked about,
And the souls are looking for better weather.

Where is me shirt? Me noggin, noggin shirt,
It’s all sold for beer and tobacco.
For the collar is all worn and the sleeves they are all torn
And the tail is looking out for better weather.

Chorus

Where is me crew? Me noggin, noggin crew,

They’re all sold for beer and tobacco.

For first mate he is bored and cook he is all sore,

And the pilot’s looking out for better weather.

Where is me ship? Me noggin, noggin ship,

She’s all sold for beer and tobacco.

For her sails they got holes and the mag’s about to blow

But the helm is looking out for better weather.

Chorus

Where is me stuff? Me noggin, noggin stuff,

It’s all sold for beer and tobacco.

For I got more than enough, and time’s no longer rough

And now I’m looking out for better weather.

Now I’m sick in the head and I haven’t been to bed,

Since first I cam ashore from me slumber.

For I spent all me dough on the lassies don’t you know,

Far across the western ocean I have wandered.

Chorus

The
altitude of the star can be measured using the hand stretched out in
front of the eyes, with shoulders squared. Different configurations of
the hand (a fist, a span, two fingers, three fingers) can be calibrated

1) TURKS AND CAICOS 🇹🇨

As a tropical Atlantic archipelago, the Turks and Caicos has historically had a past with pirates and privateers. One of the greatest remnants of piracy in the Turks and Caicos is in fact our country name, which basically translates to Pirate Islands, as it’s derived from the term Turks, which was a synonym for pirates in previous centuries, and cayo hico, a version of the indigenous Taino people’s name for an archipelago or island chain. During much of the ‘golden age of piracy’, from about the mid-1600s to mid-1700s, pirates were known to have operated and had bases in the Turks and Caicos.

6 ) LANDSAT 9 has launched

Landsat 9

September 27, 2021
Landsat
9 is an Earth observation satellite launched on 27 September 2021 from
Space Launch Complex-3E at Vandenberg Space Force Base on an Atlas V 401
launch vehicle.  NASA is in charge of building, launching, and
testing the satellite, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS)
operates the satellite, and manages and distributes the data archive.
It will be the ninth satellite in the Landsat program.

Landsat 9

 The
first image collected by Landsat 9, on Oct. 31, 2021, shows remote
coastal islands and inlets of the Kimberly region of Western Australia.
In the top middle section of the image, the Mitchell River carves
through sandstone, while to the left Bigge Island and the Coronation
Islands stand out in the Indian Ocean.

"The
data and images from Landsat 9 are expanding our capability to see how
Earth has changed over decades," Karen St. Germain, director of NASA's
Earth Science Division, said in the same statement. "In a changing
climate, continuous and free access to Landsat data, and the other data
in NASA's Earth observing fleet, helps data users, including city
planners, farmers and scientists, plan for the future."

In the case of the Panama Posse helps us navigate saver !

Landsat 9
Landdata

Landsat
9 carries two main instruments: the Operational Land Imager 2 (OLI-2),
which detects visible, near-infrared, and shortwave-infrared light in
nine wavelengths, and the Thermal Infrared Sensor 2 (TIRS-2), which
detects thermal radiation in two wavelengths used to measure Earth’s
surface temperatures. Together the instruments can provide users with
essential information about crop health, irrigation use, water quality,
wildfire severity, deforestation, glacial retreat, and urban expansion,
especially when put in the context of the long Landsat data record.

The
Panama Posse has over 150 gigs of Satellite Images for navigation
available for download - many have been sourced thanks to Landsat and
months of work by Panama Posse participants such as Rob on Avant.

12) MAKE A DIFFERENCE

 HELP CORAL REEFS

ADVENTURE SCIENTISTS AND UNIVERSITY OF GUADALAJARA TO CONDUCT MEXICAN CORAL REEF STUDIES WITH PANAMA POSSE VOLUNTEERS

Adventure Scientists

Adventure
Scientists is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports
scientists through the planning and execution of large-scale data
collection projects for scientific partners around the world. They
mobilize skilled adventure volunteers—hikers, sailors, skiers, divers,
and more—who operate on any scale from almost anywhere on Earth to
collect high-quality scientific data. This empowers scientists to think
bigger and access the data, public support, and funding they need to
achieve impact. Adventure Scientists’ goal is to accelerate
environmental and human health solutions.

Mexican Coral Reefs Project Information

Why:
Mexico’s Pacific Coast is harbor to some of the world’s most biodiverse
coral reefs. They support fishes, sharks, turtles, and other marine
life. They also buffer the coastline from intense storms and provide
livelihoods from fishing and tourism. Yet these reefs are imperiled by
ocean acidification, more frequent and powerful storms due to climate
change, and damage from tourism.

Impact:
Adventure Scientists is recruiting experienced diver volunteers to
provide Universidad de Guadalajara's Dr. Paola Rodríguez-Troncoso and
Dr. Amílcar Cupul Magaña with critical data to understand how climate
change and human pressure are impacting coral communities. The project
will provide hard data to government partners to support policy
recommendations that can protect these unique reefs into the future.

Who:
Eligible volunteers are experienced, conservation-minded divers with
access to boats who can commit to at least three dives within a year
along the Mexican Pacific coast in the Puerto Vallarta region.
Volunteers must provide their own dive equipment and have a minimum of
25 logged dives if a PADI certified open water diver, 15 if PADI
advanced open water diver, and 10 dives if they are a NAUI certified
advanced open water diver.

What:
At each field site, dive teams will swim five different 25-meter-long
belt transects parallel to the coast. Teams will swim each of the five
transects three times to:

Identify fish species, size, and ratio of adults to juveniles

Count abundance of sea urchin, sea stars, sea cucumbers, etc.

Categorize different coral types

Measure contour of seafloor

Where:
Field sites are predetermined (GPS coordinates provided) and no deeper
than ~12 meters. See the map on the project page for dive locations.

Are
you interested in contributing to the protection of coral ecosystems on
the Mexican Pacific Coast? To learn how you can get involved in this,
and other Adventure Scientists projects, please join Founder/Executive
Director, Gregg Treinish, and University of Guadalajara scientists, Dr.
Paola Rodríguez-Troncoso and Dr. Amílcar Cupul Magaña, at 9 am, December
5th

For
qualified, registered divers interested in volunteering, the seminar
will be followed by an in-person field training, held exclusively for
Panama Posse affiliates, on December 6th beginning at 8 am. To learn

18) PANAMA POSSE CONVOYS

Convoys
ORGANIZED CONVOYS UNDER THE PANAMA POSSE Before Departure ‘Know before you go’ – Read Panama Posse updates, Noonsite (https://www.noonsite.com/ ), Caribbean Safety & Security Network https://safetyandsecuritynet.org/ ), and Facebook cruising groups (search for <destination name> and <cruising &/or cruisers> on Facebook) for the most recent reports prior to going anywhere for up to date information on the risk environment. Northeast Coast of Nicaragua and Honduras In the recent past, criminal elements have boarded, held at gunpoint and ransacked vessels passing through this region. The chart below is a composite of incidents between 2014 and 2020 for the area from the Caribbean Safety and Security Net (CSSN), linked here at https://safetyandsecuritynet.org/. Red pins represent attacks, and yellow pins represent attempted attacks.

These
violent incidents appear to be executed by “part-time pirates”,
fisherman who organize on an ad hoc basis and seize targets of
opportunity in the absence of effective law enforcement.  They do
not target larger commercial vessels at this time.

Geographically,
the Honduran and Nicaraguan east coasts do not provide harbor for
larger vessels and the national navies are small and poorly equipped to
deal with the issue, as they are small forces primarily designed for
dealing with coastal and riverine security.  The naval forces are
under-resourced.

As
the incidents normally occur well offshore, often between 75 and 125
miles from land, they are beyond VHF radio range from shore bases, and
in any case it is believed the relevant navies do not effectively
maintain a 24/7 radio watch. It is uncertain what other illegal
activities these part time pirates may engage in.

While
these areas are variously within the territorial waters or exclusive
economic zones of Colombia, Guatemala, or Honduras, they are not
effectively patrolled or policed by any of these states.  Adding
complication to the situation, some areas including the Serranilla Bank
are disputed territories.

Security and Safety Risks Associated with the Entire Coast of Venezuela

For
westbound vessels, a transit of the Venezuelan coast from Trinidad to
the ABCs and Columbia is often undertaken.  For vessels leaving
Colombia to points north, a close approach to the easternmost stretch of
the Venezuelan coast is also unavoidable.  There has also been an
increase in piracy activities in the coastal waters near Trinidad,
believed to be the actions of Venezuelan smugglers.

 HELP CORAL REEFS

ADVENTURE SCIENTISTS AND UNIVERSITY OF GUADALAJARA TO CONDUCT MEXICAN CORAL REEF STUDIES WITH PANAMA POSSE VOLUNTEERS

@ NEW TIME 08:00 CORAL REEF MEASURING SESSION START

Adventure Scientists is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports scientists through the planning and execution of large-scale data collection projects for scientific partners around the world. They mobilize skilled adventure volunteers—hikers, sailors, skiers, divers, and more—who operate on any scale from almost anywhere on Earth to collect high-quality scientific data. This empowers scientists to think bigger and access the data, public support, and funding they need to achieve impact. Adventure Scientists’ goal is to accelerate environmental and human health solutions.

Mexican Coral Reefs Project Information

Are you interested in contributing to the protection of coral ecosystems on the Mexican Pacific Coast?

Why: Mexico’s Pacific Coast is harbor to some of the world’s most biodiverse coral reefs. They support fishes, sharks, turtles, and other marine life. They also buffer the coastline from intense storms and provide livelihoods from fishing and tourism. Yet these reefs are imperiled by ocean acidification, more frequent and powerful storms due to climate change, and damage from tourism.

Impact: Adventure Scientists is recruiting experienced diver volunteers to provide Universidad de Guadalajara's Dr. Paola Rodríguez-Troncoso and Dr. Amílcar Cupul Magaña with critical data to understand how climate change and human pressure are impacting coral communities. The project will provide hard data to government partners to support policy recommendations that can protect these unique reefs into the future.

Who: Eligible volunteers are experienced, conservation-minded divers with access to boats who can commit to at least three dives within a year along the Mexican Pacific coast in the Puerto Vallarta region. Volunteers must provide their own dive equipment and have a minimum of 25 logged dives if a PADI certified open water diver, 15 if PADI advanced open water diver, and 10 dives if they are a NAUI certified advanced open water diver.

What: At each field site, dive teams will swim five different 25-meter-long belt transects parallel to the coast. Teams will swim each of the five transects three times to:

Identify fish species, size, and ratio of adults to juveniles

Count abundance of sea urchin, sea stars, sea cucumbers, etc.

Categorize different coral types

Measure contour of seafloor

Where: Field sites are predetermined (GPS coordinates provided) and no deeper than ~12 meters. See the map on the project page for dive locations.

Are you interested in contributing to the protection of coral ecosystems on the Mexican Pacific Coast? To learn how you can get involved in this, and other Adventure Scientists projects, please join Founder/Executive Director, Gregg Treinish, and University of Guadalajara scientists, Dr. Paola Rodríguez-Troncoso and Dr. Amílcar Cupul Magaña, at 9 am, December 5th

For qualified, registered divers interested in volunteering, the seminar will be followed by an in-person field training, held exclusively for Panama Posse affiliates, on December 6th beginning at 8 am. To learn more and apply to volunteer: https://www.adventurescientists.org/mexico-reefs-panama-posse.html

Before Departure
‘Know before you go’ – Read Panama Posse updates, Noonsite (https://www.noonsite.com/ ), Caribbean Safety & Security Network https://safetyandsecuritynet.org/ )) for the most recent reports prior to going anywhere for up to date information on the risk environment.

Northeast Coast of Nicaragua and Honduras

In the recent past, criminal elements have boarded, held at gunpoint and ransacked vessels passing through this region.  The chart below is a composite of incidents between 2014 and 2020 for the area from the Caribbean Safety and Security Net (CSSN), linked here at https://safetyandsecuritynet.org/.  Red pins represent attacks, and yellow pins represent attempted attacks.
These violent incidents appear to be executed by “part-time pirates”, fisherman who organize on an ad hoc basis and seize targets of opportunity in the absence of effective law enforcement.  They do not target larger commercial vessels at this time.
Geographically, the Honduran and Nicaraguan east coasts do not provide harbor for larger vessels and the national navies are small and poorly equipped to deal with the issue, as they are small forces primarily designed for dealing with coastal and riverine security.  The naval forces are under-resourced.
As the incidents normally occur well offshore, often between 75 and 125 miles from land, they are beyond VHF radio range from shore bases, and in any case it is believed the relevant navies do not effectively maintain a 24/7 radio watch. It is uncertain what other illegal activities these part time pirates may engage in.
While these areas are variously within the territorial waters or exclusive economic zones of Colombia, Guatemala, or Honduras, they are not effectively patrolled or policed by any of these states.  Adding complication to the situation, some areas including the Serranilla Bank are disputed territories.
Security and Safety Risks Associated with the Entire Coast of Venezuela
For westbound vessels, a transit of the Venezuelan coast from Trinidad to the ABCs and Columbia is often undertaken.  For vessels leaving Colombia to points north, a close approach to the easternmost stretch of the Venezuelan coast is also unavoidable.  There has also been an increase in piracy activities in the coastal waters near Trinidad, believed to be the actions of Venezuelan smugglers.

3) PANAMA POSSE  "PORT SAFETY" courtesy of Safe Esteem

  • If you rent a car be certain to remove the Rental Car frame around
the license plate to avoid corrupt local officials from stopping you
over others and thieves which look for rental cars to break into.
  • Park close to the entrance of the supermarket where there is a lot of foot traffic.
  • LOCK YOUR CAR  and if you can keep an eye on your car.
  • With taxis always pre-negotiate the total fee in the local currency. Use Uber/Lyft if available.
  • Ask for the drivers name and text the license plate to yourself or your buddy boat.
  • Carry ID (copy of passport) with you at all times.
  • If you get stopped by  traffic police ask for the ticket !
  • Do not pay a bribe. YOU are training them !
  • Corrupt cops will do everything possible to delay you in order to get their bribe - so tell them you are not in a hurry and
plan on staying months in the area with a local gringo. DO not tell
them that you are trying to catch a flight or late for it - stay calm
and act with no worry and no hurry.
  • Simply keep asking for the ticket - do not pay anything on the spot.
  • If they ask for your passport let them know that it is with the Marina Office and that you request their official ID for verification and to please call the Marina office. Show them your photocopy.
  • Always Write down the official’s name,
station, telephone number and address of the station and location -
(have the official write it down for you so you have proof)
  • If you are on the road or walking in a busy area and you think / feel, you are being followed make 3 left turns - if the car or person is still behind you - you are not paranoid- you are being followed !
  • Make your way as quickly as possible to a 4 or 5 star resort -
think Marriott, Sheraton, Hilton and got to the front desk and ask to
speak with the chief security officer and inform them of you being
    followed.
  • Do not visit the capitals, presidential palaces or universities - especially  when there are protests planned.
  • When
going through locations with security (e.g. transportation, large
events), it is safest to move through security versus remaining outside a
venue or remain in public areas.
  • Where possible, use public transportation at off-peak times and be efficient; do not linger in terminals or boarding areas longer than necessary.
  • If someone tell you that you have some stain or liquid on your shirt turn away from them immediately  - they are pick pocketing you  - go towards a wall and face outward fending of anyone coming near you.

only did he ensure we had some additional help on the beach, but he also
walked us through to immigration, merchant marine and finally completed
all our paperwork.  After everything was completed, he handed us a
little gift bag and assisted us off the beach. Exceptional service from
the Port.

Golfito
- we had spoken with Banana Bay prior to arrival and thought we would
be able to check in ourselves with things relaxing a bit with COVID
however a marina or agent is still required for the process. Banana Bay
charged us $350 US Dollars for the process/fees and it did take the
majority of the day to check-in.  As well, the boat was inspected
by the Department of Agriculture looking specifically for any raw pork
products and live animals. We provided the dinghy ride for the inspector
back and forth to the boat as we were anchored off the marina. They
have also decreased the time limit for pleasure vessels in Costa Rica
back to 90 days and the 180 day option is no longer available from the
Aduana, for those seeking more time in the country.

Gabriela
from Banana Bay was awesome running us around to the different offices
and the other quote we received from an agent was $800.00 US so Banana
Bay is a great option especially if you an anchored off the marina.

The quaint and historic streets in Casco Viejo

Casco
Viejo (Old Quarter), also known as Casco Antiguo or San Felipe, is the
historic district of Panama City. Completed and settled in 1673, it was
built following the near-total destruction of the original Panamá city
by Governor Juan Perez de Guzman who had it set on fire, before the
attack and looting by the pirate and fellow seafarer Henry Morgan.

Natives in the new world

FIRST ENCOUNTERS WITH NATIVE AMERICANS
The
above 1505 engraving is one of the earliest European graphical
portrayals  of   Native Americans who lived for 500+
generations in the Americas before the arrival of Europeans. This is evidenced by  a skeleton of a teenage girl  named 'Naia'  found in 2007 in the underwater caves called sistema Sac Actun in Mexico's eastern Yucatán Peninsula - dated 13,000 years old, and it is considered the oldest genetically intact human skeleton ever found in
the Americas.

This
image also represents  the ways in which Europeans would view the
people they called Indians for many generations. Native Americans here
are portrayed as exotic savages, whose sexuality was not contained
within stable families and whose savagery was evidenced in their
practice of eating the flesh of their slain enemies.

In
the background are the ships that have brought the European visitors
who recorded these images. (The Granger Collection, New York)

THE DISCOVERY OF THE AMERICAS  did
not begin with Christopher Columbus. It began 10+ thousand of years
earlier when human beings first crossed into the new continents and
began to settle. These nomadic peoples entered the new continent and
moved ever deeper into its heart and south. By the end of the fifteenth
century , when the first important contact with Europeans occurred, the
Americas were the home to more than 50 million, perhaps as many as 75 million highly evolved sapiens.
These ancient civilizations had experienced many changes and many
catastrophes during their long history. But it seems certain that none
of these experiences was as tragically transforming as the arrival of
Europeans. In the long term, European settlers came to dominate most
areas of the Americas. But even in the short term—in the first violent
years of Spanish and Portuguese exploration and conquest—the impact of
the new arrivals was profound. Battles between natives and
Europeans continued but there were also many other interactions through
which these very different civilizations shaped one another, learned
from one another, and changed each other permanently and profoundly.

Treaty of Tordesillas The 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas neatly divided the

15th Century WHY EUROPE LOOKS WESTWARD

Europeans
were almost entirely unaware of the existence of the Americas before
the fifteenth century. A few early wanderers—Leif Eriksson, an
eleventh-century Norse seaman, and perhaps others—had glimpsed parts of
the New World and had demonstrated that Europeans were capable of
crossing the ocean to reach it. But even if their discoveries had become
common knowledge (and they had not), there would have been little incentive for others to follow.
Europe in the middle ages (roughly 500– 1500 A.D.) was not an
adventurous civilization. Divided into innumerable small duchies and
kingdoms, its outlook was overwhelmingly provincial. Subsistence
agriculture predominated, and commerce was limited; few merchants looked
beyond the boundaries of their own regions. The Roman Catholic Church
exercised a measure of spiritual authority over most of the continent,
and the Holy Roman Empire provided at least a nominal political center.
Even so, real power was for the most part widely dispersed; only rarely
could a single leader launch a great venture. Gradually, however,
conditions in Europe changed so that by the late fifteenth century,
interest in overseas exploration had grown. Commerce and Nationalism
Two important and related changes provided the first incentive for
Europeans to look toward new lands. One was a result of the significant
population growth in fifteenth-century Europe. The Black Death, a
catastrophic epidemic of the bubonic plague that began in Constantinople
in 1347, had decimated Europe, killing (according to some estimates)
more than a third of the people of the continent and debilitating its
already limited economy. But a century and a half later, the population
had rebounded. With that growth came a rise in land values, a
reawakening of commerce, and a general increase in prosperity. Affluent
landlords became eager to purchase goods from distant regions, and a new
merchant class emerged to meet their demand. As trade increased, and as
advances in navigation and shipbuilding made long-distance sea travel
more feasible, interest in developing new markets, finding new products,
and opening new trade routes rapidly increased. Paralleling the rise of
commerce in Europe, and in part responsible for it, was the rise of new governments that were more united and
powerful than the feeble political entities of the feudal past. In the
western areas of Europe, the authority of the distant pope and the even
more distant Holy Roman Emperor was necessarily weak. As a result,
strong new monarchs emerged there and created centralized nation-states,
with national courts, national armies, and—perhaps most important—national tax systems.
As these ambitious kings and queens consolidated their power and
increased their wealth, they became eager to enhance the commercial
growth of their nations. Ever since the early fourteenth century, when
Marco Polo and other adventurers had returned from Asia bearing exotic goods (spices, fabrics, dyes)
and even more exotic tales, Europeans who hoped for commercial glory
had dreamed above all of trade with the East. For two centuries, that
trade had been limited by the difficulties of the long, arduous overland
journey to the Asian courts. But in the fourteenth century, as the
maritime capabilities of several western European societies increased
and as Muslim societies seized control of the eastern routes to Asia,
there began to be serious talk of finding a faster, safer sea route to
Asia. Such dreams gradually found a receptive audience in the courts of
the new monarchs. By the late fifteenth century, some of them were ready
to finance daring voyages of exploration. The first to do so were the
Portuguese. They were the preeminent maritime power in the fifteenth
century, in large part because of the work of one man, Prince Henry the
Navigator. Henry’s own principal interest was not in finding a sea route
to Asia, but in exploring the western coast of Africa. He dreamed of
establishing a Christian empire there to aid in his country’s wars
against the Moors of northern Africa; and he hoped to find new stores of
gold.

Prince Henry the Navigator

The
explorations he began did not fulfill his own hopes, but they
ultimately led farther than he had dreamed. Some of Henry’s mariners
went as far south as Cape Verde, on Africa’s west coast. In 1486 (six
years after Henry’s death), Bartholomeu Dias rounded the southern tip of
Africa (the Cape of Good Hope); and in 1497–1498 Vasco da Gama
proceeded all the way around the cape to India. In 1500, the next fleet
bound for India, under the command of Pedro Cabral, was blown westward
off its southerly course and happened upon the coast of Brazil.

But
by then another man, in the service of another country, had already
encountered the New World.Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus, who
was born and reared in Genoa, Italy, obtained most of his early
seafaring experience in the service of the Portuguese. As a young man,
he became intrigued with the possibility, already under discussion in
many seafaring circles, of reaching Asia by going not east but west.
Columbus’s hopes rested on several basic misconceptions. He believed
that the world was far smaller than it actually is. He also believed
that the Asian continent extended farther eastward than it actually
does. He assumed, therefore, that the Atlantic was narrow enough to be
crossed on a relatively brief voyage. It did not occur to him that
anything lay to the west between Europe and Asia. Columbus failed to win
support for his plan in Portugal, so he turned to Spain. The Spaniards
were not yet as advanced a maritime people as the Portuguese, but they
were at least as energetic and ambitious. And in the fifteenth century,
the marriage of Spain’s two most powerful regional rulers, Ferdinand of
Aragon and Isabella of Castile, had produced the strongest monarchy in
Europe. Like other young monarchies, it soon grew eager to demonstrate
its strength by sponsoring new commercial ventures. Columbus appealed to
Queen Isabella for support for his proposed westward voyage. In 1492,
having consolidated the monarchy’s position within Spain itself,
Isabella agreed to Columbus’s request. Commanding ninety men and three
ships—the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María — Columbus left Spain in
August 1492 and sailed west into the Atlantic on what he thought was a
straight course for Japan. Ten weeks later, he sighted land and assumed
he had reached his target. In fact, he had landed on an island in the
Bahamas. When he pushed on and encountered Cuba, he assumed he had
reached China. He returned to Spain in triumph, bringing with him
several captured natives as evidence of his achievement.

This map is the earliest definitive depiction of the Americas by a European. It was drawn by Juan de la Cosa, a cartographer who accompanied Christopher Columbus on his first voyage to what would soon be known as the

(He
called the natives “Indians” because he believed they were from the
East Indies in the Pacific.) But Columbus had not, of course,
encountered the court of the great khan in China or the fabled wealth of
the Indies. A year later, therefore, he tried again, this time with a
much larger expedition. As before, he headed into the Caribbean,
discovering several other islands and leaving a small and short-lived
colony on Hispaniola. On a third voyage, in 1498, he finally reached the
mainland and cruised along the northern coast of South America. When he
passed the mouth of the Orinoco River (in present-day Venezuela), he
concluded for the first time that what he had discovered was not in fact
an island off the coast of China, as he had assumed, but a separate
continent; such a large freshwater stream, he realized, could emerge
only from a large body of land. Still, he remained convinced that Asia
was only a short distance away. And although he failed in his efforts to
sail around the northeastern coast of South America to the Indies (he
was blocked by the Isthmus of Panama), he returned to Spain believing
that he had explored at least the fringes of the Far East. He continued
to believe that until he died. Columbus’s celebrated accomplishments
made him a popular hero for a time, but he ended his life in obscurity.
When Europeans at last gave a name to the New World, they ignored him.
The distinction went instead to a Florentine merchant, Amerigo Vespucci,
a member of a later Portuguese expedition to the New World who wrote a
series of vivid descriptions of the lands he visited and who recognized
the Americas as new continents. Columbus has been celebrated for
centuries as the “Admiral of the Ocean Sea” (a title he struggled to
have officially bestowed on him during his lifetime) and as a
representative of the new, secular, scientific impulses of Renaissance
Europe. But Columbus was also a deeply religious man, even something of a
mystic  His voyages were inspired as much by his conviction that
he was fulfilling a divine mission as by his interest in geography and
trade. A strong believer in biblical prophecies, he came to see himself
as a man destined to advance the coming of the millennium. “God made me
the messenger of the new heaven and the new earth,” he wrote near the
end of his life, “and he showed me the spot where to find it.”

Americas

A similar combination of worldly and religious passions lay behind many
subsequent efforts at exploration and settlement of the New World.
Partly as a result of Columbus’s initiative, Spain began to devote
greater resources and energy to maritime exploration and gradually
replaced Portugal as the leading seafaring nation. The Spaniard Vasco de
Balboa fought his way across the Isthmus of Panama in 1513 and became
the first known European to gaze westward upon the great ocean that
separated America from China and the Indies. Seeking access to that
ocean, Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese in the employ of the Spanish,
found the strait that now bears his name at the southern end of South
America, struggled through the stormy narrows and into the ocean (so
calm by contrast that he christened it the “Pacific”), then proceeded to
the Philippines. There Magellan died in a conflict with the natives,
but his expedition went on to complete the fi rst known circumnavigation
of the globe (1519–1522). By 1550, Spaniards had explored the coasts of
North America as far north as Oregon in the west and Labrador in the
east, as well as some of the interior regions of the continent.

The Conquistadores

In time, Spanish explorers in the New World stopped thinking of America
simply as an obstacle to their search for a route to the East. They
began instead to consider it as possible source of wealth rivaling and
even surpassing the original Indies. On the basis of Columbus’s
discoveries, the Spanish claimed for themselves the whole of the New
World, except for a piece of it (today’s Brazil) that was reserved by a
papal decree for the Portuguese. By the mid-sixteenth century, the
Spanish were well on their way to establishing a substantial American
empire. The early Spanish colonists, beginning with those Columbus
brought on his second voyage, settled on the islands of the Caribbean,
where they tried to enslave the Indians and find gold. They had little
luck in either effort. But then, in 1518, Hernando Cortés led a small
military expedition of about 600 men into Mexico. Cortés had been a
Spanish government official in Cuba for fourteen years and to that point
had achieved little success. But when he heard stories of great
treasures in Mexico, he decided to go in search of them. He met strong
and resourceful resistance from the Aztecs and their powerful emperor,
Montezuma. But Cortés and his army had, unknowingly, unleashed an
assault on the Aztecs far more devastating than military attack: they
had exposed the natives to smallpox during an early and relatively
peaceful visit to Tenochtitlán.

The Map: Tenochtitlan, 1524

A smallpox epidemic decimated the population and made it possible for the
Spanish to triumph in their second attempt at conquest. The Spanish saw
the epidemic as vindication of their efforts. When the Christians were
exhausted from war, one follower of Cortés said at the time, “God
saw fi t to send the Indians smallpox.” Through his ruthless suppression
of the surviving natives, Cortés established a lasting reputation as
the most brutal of the Spanish conquistadores (conquerors). The news
that silver was to be found in Mexico attracted the attention of other
Spaniards. From the island colonies and from Spain itself, a wave of
conquistadores descended on the mainland in search of fortune—a movement
comparable in some ways to the nineteenth-century gold rushes elsewhere
in the world, but far more vicious. Francisco Pizarro, who conquered
Peru (1532–1538) and revealed to Europeans the wealth of the Incas,
opened the way for other advances into South America. His onetime deputy
Hernando de Soto, in a futile search for gold, silver, and jewels, led
several expeditions (1539–1541) through Florida west into the continent
and became the fi rst white man known to have crossed the Mississippi
River. Francisco Coronado traveled north from Mexico (1540–1542) into
what is now New Mexico in a similarly fruitless search for gold and
jewels; in the process, he helped open the Southwest of what is now the
United States to Spanish settlement. The story of the Spanish warriors
is one of great military daring and achievement. It is also a story of
great brutality and greed—a story that would be repeated time and again
over centuries of European conquest of the Americas. The conquistadores
subjugated and, in some areas (through a combination of warfare and
disease), almost exterminated the native populations. In this horrible
way, they made possible the creation of a vast Spanish empire in the New
World. Spanish America Lured by dreams of treasure, Spanish explorers,
conquistadores, and colonists established a vast empire for Spain in the
New World. New European diseases and Spanish military power forced the
previously powerful Aztec and Incan empires into submission.

9) HERNÁN CORTÉS

Hernán Cortes

Hernán Cortés de Monroy y Pizarro Altamirano was a Spanish Conquistador who
led an expedition that caused the fall of the Aztec Empire and brought
large portions of what is now mainland Mexico under the rule of Spain in
the early 16th century. Cortés was part of the generation of Spanish
explorers and conquistadors who began the first phase of the Spanish
colonization of the Americas.

He executed a successful strategy of allying with some indigenous people
against others. He also used a native woman, Doña Marina aka La
Malinche, as an interpreter who played a critically important role in
the Spanish conquest of Mexico. In addition to translating she provided
Cortez with insight into the Aztec culture, and he came to depend on her
advice on many matters. She later bore his first son.  After he
overthrew the Aztec Empire, Cortés was awarded the title of Marqués del
Valle de Oaxaca.

Encomienda

The history of the Spanish Empire spanned three distinct periods. The first was the age of discovery
and exploration—beginning with Columbus and continuing through the
first two decades of the sixteenth century. The second was the age of the conquistadores,
in which Spanish military forces (aided by the diseases they unleashed)
established their dominion over the lands once ruled by natives. The third phase
began in the 1570s, when new Spanish laws—the Ordinances of
Discovery—banned the most brutal military conquests. From that point on,
the Spanish expanded their presence in America through colonization.
The first Spaniards to arrive in the New World, the conquistadores, had
been interested in only one thing: getting rich. And in that they were
fabulously successful. For 300 years, beginning in the sixteenth
century, the mines in Spanish America yielded more than ten times as
much gold and silver as the rest of the world’s mines put together.
These riches made Spain the wealthiest and most powerful nation on
earth. After the first wave of conquest, however, most Spanish settlers
in America traveled to the New World for other reasons. Many went in
hopes of creating a profitable agricultural economy. Unlike the
conquistadores, who left little but destruction behind them, these
settlers helped establish elements of European civilization in America
that permanently altered both the landscape and the social structure.
Another important force for colonization was the Catholic Church.
Ferdinand and Isabella, in establishing Spain’s claim to most of the
Americas from Mexico south, bowed to the wishes of the Church and
established the requirement that Catholicism be the only religion of the
new territories. Spain abided by that condition. As a result, many
Spanish settlements in the New World were highly religious in character.
Although the Spanish founded commercial and military centers in the
sixteenth century, another common form of settlement by the early
seventeenth century was the mission. Missions had commercial lives, to
be sure. But their primary purpose, at least at fi rst, was converting
natives to Catholicism. There were usually military garrisons connected
to the missions, to protect them from hostile natives. Presidios
(military bases) often grew up nearby to provide additional protection.
Indeed, after the era of the conquistadores came to a close in the
1540s, the missionary impulse became one of the principal motives for
European emigration to America. Priests or friars accompanied almost all
colonizing ventures. Through the work of zealous missionaries, the
gospel of the Catholic Church ultimately extended throughout South and
Central America, Mexico, and into the South and Southwest of the present
United States.
