1) DAY OF THE DEAD

Day of the Dead

..
is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, in particular the
Central and South regions, and by people of Mexican heritage elsewhere.
The multi-day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pray for
and remember friends and family members who have died, and helping
support their spiritual journey. In Mexican culture, death is viewed as a
natural part of the human cycle. Mexicans view it not as a day of
sadness but as a day of celebration because their loved ones awake and
celebrate with them

Traditions connected with the holiday include
building private altars called ofrendas, honoring the deceased using
calaveras, aztec marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the
departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts. Visitors also leave
possessions of the deceased at the graves. Scholars trace the origins of
the modern Mexican holiday to indigenous observances dating back
hundreds of years and to an Aztec festival dedicated to the goddess
Mictecacihuatl. It has become a national symbol and as such is taught
(for educational purposes) in the nation’s schools.

MIcatlan

MICTLÁN

According
to the Great Nahuatl Dictionary, Mictlán means underworld, others
translate it as “place of the dead.” Different legends, visual
representations and ancient codices define Mictlán as an unknown,
dangerous and dark place, which has nine levels.

sp

DIVE INTO MYTHOLOGY

In the Mexica worldview, the Earth was considered a being that devoured the flesh of the deceased. At the time of death, the Mexica thought that they were paying off their debt
with the Earth, since when they died, they gave continuity to the cycle
of the universe. These nine levels are related to rot, fetid, cold,
damp, watery, darkness, and night. The animals related to the Mictlán
were owls, bats, worms and centipedes, which were in the service of
Mictlantecuhtli and his consort Mictecacíhuatl.

Day of the Dead is a tradition that has been going on for more than 3,000 years. It's a Mexican celebration of the deceased that begins on October 31 and lasts until November 2.

15) SIAN KAʼAN BIOSPHERE 🇲🇽 MEXICO
"WHERE THE SKY IS BORN”

Sian Kaʼan Biosphere

In
the Mayan language SIAN KAʼAN  it means “Where the sky is born”.
This is the name of the Biosphere Reserve that is located in the south –
east of the Yucatan Peninsula, which was declared by UNESCO in 1987
“Natural Heritage of Humanity”. The Reserve occupies an area of 528
thousand 147 hectares, where they are home to hundreds of different
species of flora and fauna. Some species are in danger of extinction,
therefore the Reserve is a protected area.

Sian Kaʼan Biosphere

How to get to Sian Kaʼan Biosphere ?

A
dirt road starts from Tulum that, following the coastline, reaches
Punta Allen. The path allows you to appreciate a wonderful landscape as
well as flora and fauna. Punta Allen is a small fishing village whose
boatmen cooperative offers various tours of the Reserve.

Where the sky is born”.

In Punta Allen there is a restaurant on the beach that serves snacks and refreshing drinks as well as sea dishes.

Boat
tours through the Biosphere enter the mangroves, which are home to an
enormous biological diversity, both birds and fish, crustaceans,
mollusks, etc. The tangled channels of the mangrove lead us first to the
Laguna Negra; with a lush tropical ecosystem; to finally flow into the
Caribbean Sea. The sea is turquoise blue and as it is a protected area
you will find species in the wild such as starfish, turtles and dolphins
that can be appreciated during the boat ride.

Biosphere-Reserve

The
Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is also home to part of the second largest
coral reef in the world. Helped with your snorkel, visor and fins you
can appreciate the corals, coral fish, manta rays and barracudas.

Five
minutes by boat from the reefs are real natural pools, the Blanquizal,
where you can relax in the crystalline and shallow waters of the
Caribbean Sea, surrounded by an enchanting natural landscape.

17)  CLIMATOLOGY

Every
Maritime area  of the earth has Pilot Charts aka wind roses and
all of them are available for each calendar  month on the panama
posse website - example below at https://panamaposse.com/nicaragua

WINDROSES

THE IDES OF MARCH PAPAGAYO WINDS

Wind
roses are located in the center of each 5° square on the surface of the
Earth on the oceans pilot charts and are published for each month. We
have chopped these pilot charts to digestible portions into each Maritime Area. This exert above represents March for Nicaragua Pacific Coast. aka the Papagayo Wind Area.

Each
rose shows the distribution of the winds that have prevailed in the
area over a considerable period of time – think decades.

Wind
percentages are summarized for calm (center) and for the Cardinal and
Inter cardinal compass points. The arrows fly with the wind, indicating
the direction from which the wind blew. |

The
length of the shaft, measured from the outside of the circle to the end
of the visible shaft (not necessarily to the end of the last feather),
using the appropriate scale below, gives the percentage of the total
number of observations in which the wind has blown from that direction.

The
number of feathers shows the average force of the wind on the Beaufort
scale. The figure in the center of the circle gives the percentage of
calms. When the arrow is too long (over29 percent) to fit conveniently
in the 5° square, the percentage is indicated numerically on the shaft.

WINDROSE

WINDROSE

EXAMPLE ABOVE
In this wind rose reported observations the wind has averaged as follows:

N 32 percent, Beaufort force 5

NE 11 percent, Beaufort force 4

S 3 percent, Beaufort force 4

SW 5 percent,Beaufort force 4

5) RETURN TO THE DIESEL BUG

Diesel Bug

After a season of leaving a vessel in the the tropics it is time to check the stored diesel. Fuel in tanks deteriorates over time, as it reacts with the oxygen in the air. Usually, fuel can stay in a usable condition under storage for up to a year, after which it may begin to develop sediments. Fuel is not just affected by these residues, but also bacteria and fungi.

Water that forms in fuel tanks due to condensation (when the tanks heat up during the day and cool down at night and are not full, for example), creates the perfect petri dish for bacteria. One of the most common microorganisms that can grow under these circumstances is the diesel bug, deteriorates your fuel and create a sludge capable of damaging your engine.

Once you get underway it shushes around and the fuel pickup hose quickly gets clogged. The bug clogs the fuel system.

Diesel Bug

ACTUAL CAUSES

  • Humidity in the air
  • Fuel tank condensation
  • Fuel tank insulation
  • Air leak on seals on fuel tank filler cap inc damaged o-rings
  • Poor fuel station storage quality
  • Low volume of sales at fuel station
Slow USe

REMEDIES

Once you have the bug
1) Separate the water from the diesel
2) Shock and kill the diesel bug with biocides
3) Remove sediments from the bottom of your tank

To Prevent the bug
1) Fill the tank
2) Use a fuel filter to take on fuel from the pump
3) Use Enzymes to prevent the bug from forming in the first place

FINCA HAMBURGO >> The sun rises over the Chiapas mountains around the Tacaná volcano

One cold January morning, Arthur Erich Edelmann, his wife Doris, and seven other colleagues set sail from Hamburg, Germany, all from Perleberg, a small town an hour and a half from Berlin. Erich had a coffee machinery factory in his hometown, owned by his family, which was facing financial problems at the time it received the invitation from the Mexican government. What did you feel when you read that letter? What would you have thought to take a risk, abandon your business, your city, your people, your country, your language to start from scratch in a place so far away, so different in culture, language, nature and climate? A place that seemed like a different world. That is a story that we do not know and perhaps we never will.

Coffe in Chiapas

Erich traveled for three weeks across the Atlantic until he arrived at the Port of Veracruz, where he took a horse-driven cart with his people to go to Soconusco, Chiapas. To the wild and untouched lands that he and his family would call home.

Before arriving in Mexico, we suppose that Erich had to have read all the information available about Chiapas, about Mexico and specialized in its culture, its people, language, nature, its history. However, there was nothing that could have prepared him for the intensity of his new life.

Erich, Doris and their people arrived in Huixtla, a small village with some houses built in adobe and palm trees, inhabited by friendly indigenous families who gave them the mules and human capital necessary to reach their final destination. From there, it took them another 8 hours to be able to transport along the newly created dirt roads, which looked like tunnels through the dense jungle. On their way they could observe the Tacaná, a volcano whose eruptions transformed the land around it into a fertile paradise.

Home

With the help of workers from San Cristóbal, San Juan Chamula and Guatemala, Erich and his team of architects and engineers began to harmonize the land, build the first houses for the workers, the mill, roads. Erich and Doris lived for 11 years in one of these simple houses, couldn’t afford a bigger house, not yet. The priority was to prepare the land, build all the necessary infrastructure to work, keep people working, provide money and work, houses and food. The priority was its peoplethe priority was coffee.

They put a lot of work into investing in this long-term project, so far from home, a lot of determination and hope, a great risk and a gamble. All that work, all those years, until finally: the first harvest and the start of Finca Hamburgo.

Finca

FINCA ARGOVIA

This exemplary coffee Resort Located in the Sierra Madre of Chiapas with More than 130 years of history and culminates as a cultural and extremely worthwhile experience

Argovia is a partner and initiator of the Coffee route in Chiapas, with cabins, outdoor pool, Spa, Yoga area, Restaurant, Bar, Event areas and tours.

Argovia

Chiapas is the southernmost state in Mexico, and it borders the states of Oaxaca to the west, Veracruz to the northwest, and Tabasco to the north, and borders Guatemala to the east and southeast. Chiapas has a significant coastline on the Pacific Ocean.

The lowland, tall perennial rainforest has been almost completely cleared to allow agriculture and ranching. Rainfall decreases moving towards the Pacific Ocean, but it is still abundant enough to allow the farming of bananas, coffee and many other tropical crops near Tapachula. On the several parallel sierras or mountain ranges running along the center of Chiapas, the climate can be quite moderate and foggy, allowing the development of cloud forests like those of Reserva de la Biosfera El Triunfo, home to a handful of horned guans, resplendent quetzals, and azure-rumped tanagers.

Chiapas is home to the ancient Mayan ruins of Palenque, Yaxchilán, Bonampak, Chinkultic and Toniná.

How to get Argovia?

You will continue by Finca Eduviges paved road better known as New Germany and only 5 minutes more you’ll be in Argovia. We guarantee that any vehicle from compact to mini sedans can access our Finca with no trouble.

Excerpt from SY Solmate Journal:

20220604 ABL 0438 I
awake to the sound of rain and the feeling of Solmate shifting
laterally, around her anchor. I go up on deck and survey in the dark. We
are a bit closer to our neighbor Jasper than I would like, but that’s a
consequence of where they anchored. There seems to be no immediate
danger.

Several
months ago in Georgetown I anchored in about 17’ of water in a position
that seemed similarly close to a 36’ monohull named Stateless. In 16’
of water, with four feet for the platform, a 7:1 scope requires a swing
of 140 feet. We let out 95 feet of chain and attached our bridle. The
wind was out of the east for several days and all the boats in the
anchorage seemed to swing together.

One
night while in Georgetown, I was similarly awakened to the sound of
rain and the feeling of Solmate shifting laterally, and I similarly went
up on deck to survey in the darkness. The wind was howling and had
moved quite south of east. Moisture was pouring out of the sky like
someone was spilling it out of a bucket. I found Stateless about 30 feet
off the port quarter. It seemed her anchor chain was quite different in
scope than ours and it made me quite uncomfortable--it looked as if we
kept rotating north (as we would if the wind continued south) Stateless’
bow would collide with Solmate’s stern. I had been the second to
anchor, so I would be at fault for that collision if it happened. I
called below for Jen, and told her I needed her on deck. She woke and
said she’d be right up--she needed clothes and contact lenses.

When
I turned back to the port quarter, Solmate was less than 15 feet away
from Stateless, we were approaching her rapidly. I called “Jen, I need
you” loudly. I wanted her to go to the anchor locker and get some
fenders to fend off. I didn’t think I could leave the port quarter and
go myself as I believed I had to manually fend off the imminent
collision.

There
were less than ten feet between us when I got an idea--I untied Lunatic
from the starboard aft cleat and dragged her across the stern. Lunatic
is a RIB, or rigid inflatable boat, so her sides were pneumatic tubes; I
figured I would squeeze her between our two boats and prevent the
fiberglass boats from colliding. When I got back to the port quarter,
the boats were nearly touching and I worked Lunatic in between, pushing
on Stateless’ bow and pulling on Lunatic’s painter. Lunatic was wedged
in, her starboard side pressed against the aft corner of Solmate’s sugar
scoop. The corner dug in, and I thought she might pop. I don’t know how
much pressure a RIB can take. At that moment, Stateless’ captain came
up on deck. He had unsurprisingly heard the sound of Lunatic rubbing
against his hull. I shouted out to him over the tremendous noise of the
wind and the rain: “How much chain do you have out.”

“Sixty
feet,” he replied. OMG, sixty feet? That’s barely 3:1. Of course, this
situation is still my fault as he was anchored here first, and his 60
foot scope is holding his much smaller vessel in place.

“Can you let out more chain?” I shout.

“I only have 100 feet, but maybe I can let some more out.”

He
went to work as I continued to fend off the boats. By this time, Jen
was on deck watching the near-catastrophe unfold. Stateless let out
about 30’ of chain and swung behind Solmate. When we reached our steady
“unengaged” state in the south wind, Stateless was about ten feet behind
Solmate. The three of us stood there in the darkness, in the rain, in
the wind, and surveyed the situation. It appeared stable and should hold
until morning. I shouted an apology and he was gracious about it. We
all went back to bed.

When
the sun came up the rain was gone. The wind and seas had died down. In
the moderate breeze, Solmate and Stateless were still about ten feet
apart. Eventually the wind resumed its normal flow from the east. I
can’t remember whether Stateless or Solmate left first, but I do recall
that we were not together at the anchorage next time there was a south
wind.

But
that was then, on this early morning in the darkness, and the wind, and
the rain, having concluded there was no immediate danger from Jasper, I
went back to bed.

0638 “Did you hear that?” Jen says to me while I’m sleeping, “It sounds like the anchor chain.”

I
hadn’t heard it, but now I was up. I go up to the salon and survey the
situation. The wind is 1 knot and its raining. I look at the chart
plotter, and the night’s light air has swung Solmate through the one
place in her rotation that would be bad--Solmate’s anchor chain is
likely caught on the mooring block. With the wind so light, there is no
urgency, and even if it is caught, it will be easy to remedy. Since
there is no hurry, and because I have to use the restroom anyway, the
restroom located in Solmate’s starboard bow wins my attention.

Screech. Scrape. Klunk. “What’s that? Are you OK?” I call out from my forward perch.

Jen’s replies, “That’s the chain.”

Wow,
it was quite a noise. We are no longer “likely” wrapped on the mooring
block, we are definitely wrapped. Absent an unusual circumstance, a boat
lies downwind of its anchor. Since the wind shifts around all the time,
the location of a boat can be found within a circle (and usually on the
circle) that is defined using the swing as the radius. Except where
there is a strong wind, the chain lies mostly on the bottom. If there is
something on the bottom on which the chain can catch, like the mooring
block we charted yesterday, and the wind causes the boat and thus the
chain to swing past the obstruction, the chain will wrap on it. Since
the mooring block is 70 feet from Bernie, and our scope is 90 feet, the
chain about 20’ ahead of the bow will wrap, putting 20 feet of chain
between our boat and the new “anchor” and taking our bridle out of the
mix. It would be a terrible situation in harsh conditions, and I can
imagine a parade of horrible consequences. Thus, I am quite pleased that
the wind is substantially non-existent.

Jen
then informs me that the wind has picked up to a moderate breeze. I
guess sailors should know that things can change fast. I hurry my
business and get to the salon. Jen and I make a plan. I can go on the
bow and pull the starboard bridle lead. If the wind doesn’t get any
stronger, it will require only moderate effort to move Solmate in this
way. When we are over the point of connection between the bridle and the
chain, I think I should be able to pull the chain upwards and over the
mooring block. There are a lot of unknowns, but the wind at least is
cooperating somewhat. We get our rain gear and prepare to go forward
when the wind shifts again--not slightly, but almost 180 degrees. Just
enough to unwrap Solmate. We watch the chartplotter in amazement at this
very fortunate turn of events. Once the chain had unwrapped itself with
a little help from a friendly wind, Solmate drifted to the opposite
side of the anchor, and now lies as she should, directly downwind from
the anchor.

I
again survey for issues. Because of our experience with Stateless, and
despite the fact that I got four fenders ready-at-hand, Jen and I agreed
to leave Lunatic in the water last night. I looked at her and she was
riding lower than I would like in the water. On closer inspection, I
find that she’s taken on almost a foot of water. Fortunately, it’s fresh
water which is nary as corrosive as its salty counterpart, but it needs
to be bailed out. Jen retrieves our last working portable pump. It’s a
small hand pump with a relatively short throw. Lunatic is tied to the
starboard stern cleat. I grab her second painter and tie her amidships,
albeit closer to the stern platform. Jen hands me the pump and I climb
aboard Lunatic and begin pumping her out, in the pouring rain.
Fortunately, I am mostly sheltered from the wind by Solmate.

After
pumping and pumping and pumping, I recall there is a small liter-sized
bailer stored aboard. It’s basically a large cup with a handle. I start
bailing Lunatic, maybe 200 liters? As the water level got too low to
bail effectively, I went back to pumping. I was soaked through by the
rain, but the day’s warmth even without the sun allowed me to maintain
enough body heat so that I wasn’t shivering or cold.

When
I emerged from the project, I proudly announced to Jen that we would be
lifting Lunatic out of the water and stowing her on her platform, which
I promptly did. Once stowed above the water line I can remove Lunatic’s
drain plug and let her bail herself. I just hope we don’t need her as a
fender.

1000
I hear a chain clanking. Jen and I look around. Jasper is on deck
adjusting her scope. We chat briefly with Jasper on the radio, and a
calm voice informs us Jasper is letting out 20 feet of additional
chain. That’s good by me; I am happy to be 20 feet farther from
Jasper.

1100 We
continue to check the weather, but the models only update twice a day,
so it doesn’t change. Wind, by its very nature, is rarely smooth and
steady. Most winds are gusty, and you have to keep your eye on both the
sustained wind and the gusts. According to weather experts, sustained
wind is an average of the wind speed over a two minute period. Oddly, my
very sophisticated wind data displays available on our chart plotters,
which includes true and apparent wind angles and graphs of direction and
strength over time, doesn’t do the wind speed calculation according to
the proper formula. The wind instrument itself reports only wind
direction and gusts. The wind instrument takes its measurement from the
top of the mast using an instrument that combines wind direction
indicator (WINDEX) and an anemometer, and that data is sent by wire to
the NMEA 2000 network, where any attached marine instrument can see it.

Almost
a year ago, I purchased a remarkably small server device that connect
to the NMEA 2000 network and rebroadcasts the data on the network over a
port on my wifi. Small may be an understatement, it’s a cylinder about
2” long with a diameter of about 1”. Despite it’s diminutive size, the
server allowed me to make a web page available to any phone or other
device connected to our ships local area network (by wifi or otherwise)
Thus, anyone on the boat with a browser on their phone or computer can
see the current ships data about heading, wind speed, angle, engine rpm,
sea temperature, gps position, UTC time and the reported sounding for
depth. I use that, along with my phone’s anchor alarm (which plots
position over time and displays my alarm radius) when I am in bed at
night to check on Solmate’s status. The latter of course, is only used
when we are at anchor, but the former allows the Jen or I to see
valuable information from bed when someone else is on watch.

Anticipation
is high. The winds slowly build. The massive system, our weather event,
is leaving the coast of Florida, and heading northeast out over water.
Systems like this generally weaken on landfall and strengthen when they
return to the sea. The system as predicted, as best we can tell, is
leaving Florida just north of our position. The counterclockwise
rotation of northern hemisphere lows gives us the ability to roughly
track our bearing to the storm by the wind’s direction. Now the wind is
out of the south-south east (5 o’clock). As the storm moves to a
position where it’s leading edge is north of us, the winds will be out
of the south (6 o’clock), and when eye of the storm passes east of our
meridian, the winds will move to the west-southwest (8 o’clock).

1800 Without sun, and with the fairly heavy rains, our house bank falls below 50% with night approaching.
I start the genset, and turn on the salon and owner-hull air
conditioning to get some cool, dry air. We have enough water so I need
not engage the watermaker to use surplus generator power. Jen wants to
shower, but we haven’t heated the water for two days; it won’t be hot,
but it’s likely to be warm enough to be comfortable. I would normally
turn on the hot water but this is only accessible from the starboard
engine room, and the starboard engine room is only accessible from the
starboard sugar scoop. I don’t want to open the engine room hatch in
this rain and let all that water into the engine room, it’s probably OK
but  just seems unnecessary. Jen finds the water fine for a shower,
and comes back upstairs clean, cool, dry and happy.

I
have so-far resisted the temptation of closing in the helm station
completely. The helm station has windowed canvas that can enclose it 360
degrees. Last May when we reached the Chesapeake, we replaced the rear
canvas with a sturdy screen-like fabric that is not water tight, but
makes for good ventilation. We can reach the helm station from the salon
via a steep short staircase. This staircase can be used regardless of
whether the helm station is buttoned up or completely exposed. The helm
station has two other exits, however, one to the starboard side deck and
one to the flybridge, which sits more mid-ships and another short
staircase above. There is an opening for each of the exits that can be
closed in with the windowed canvas. I have not closed them and while
there is no direct rain in, the helm station is fairly wet. The reason I
generally don’t close these two access portals is just that, access. If
the access to the flybridge is blocked, I cannot easily and safely get
to the mast or boom in weather without taking a minute or two to open
and stow the canvas (you can’t really leave it flapping around in the
weather). Moving the canvas that blocks access to the deck is a bigger
job, and could take three or four minutes, but that is mitigated by the
fact that I can just go down to the cockpit, across to the sugar scoops
and the up onto the deck from there. Either way, if there were an issue
that creates a need to get a location where the access is blocked, I
would need to take extra time to address the issue. Thinking ahead as a
sailor must do, I generally conclude that at the moment the issue
becomes an issue, I need to get there in a hurry, the extra time needed
to gain access could prove undesirable, or worse. Nonetheless, I decide I
will close in the helm station. Doing so will keep it drier in the
event that we need to be there during the weather event, for example to
relieve strain on the anchor using the engines, to avoid another boat
that drags its anchor or breaks free from its mooring, or to maneuver
the boat in the terrible and unlikely case we break free ourselves. It
has a second collateral benefit, making the canvas system complete--each
end is attached to another--and thus, I figure, more self supporting. I
get very wet going in and out of the enclosure to zip and lash it in
place.

Gale
force winds are now sustained, meaning the wind is in the mid to high
30s, with gusts frequently into the high forties. We saw one gust at
52.0 knots on the display. That’s basically tied for the highest gust
we’ve ever seen--and that was just a month ago off Egg Island near the
Devils Backbone. I make frequent inspection checks of the deck. We hear
all kinds of noises: whistling, clacking, thrashing and occasionally
bumping. We calmly try to draw conclusions as to the source of each
noise, some requiring inspection, others just disregarded as normal.
Going on deck for inspection is a wet endeavor.

1903 Clack,
clack, clack, clack. OK, that’s not normal. Although it’s overcast, the
sun has not set, and the light of the day is still bright enough that I
easily find a snap on one outboard section of the canvas enclosure
undone. I redo the snap and go back inside to dry off--I change my
soaked clothes and I check sunset, the instruments report that it will
occur today at 2001. Thankfully afore-knowledge of celestial events,
unlike afore-knowledge of weather, is perfect.

1921 Clack,
clack, clack, clack. I head back outside and see the snap undone again,
as well as another hook-like connector. I push the snap back in, and it
pops out. After a brief (wet) inspection, I conclude that the snap
can’t take the pressure of these sustained winds; I also conclude that
the flapping released the other connector.

I
work first on the snap to stop the flapping. I roll in the small lower
section of canvas that the snap supports and tie it off to the larger
areas. The flapping is stopped, but there is a small hole in the system.
The location of the hole seems unworrisome, so I look at how to keep
the other connector in place as the snap is a substantial part of its
support. I take a snap-hook connected to a length of polypropylene line
and connect one end to the connector. I run the line rearwards and
fasten the other end to a relatively secure location near the aft of the
boat. I watch for a bit to see how my temporary fix fares. The system
stays in place as the wind gusts, so I again go inside and dry off. This
time I am so wet, I have to change my clothes, I hang up my wet outfit
in the cockpit which despite the raging weather event, is rather calm
and dry. The cockpit was well-designed to provide protection from the
weather, and although its floor is wet, the seats, tables and make-shift
clothes line are largely well protected.

1800
It’s sunset, as predicted. The sustained winds are still gale force as
predicted. While the ominous thought of howling gusts running through
our rigging throughout the night is upon us, we cheerfully decide to
ignore it, and have a drink and some dinner. Solmate seems secure. I go
outside and make one last position check to ensure Solmate and all of
the other boats in the harbor are where I would expect them. All is as
expected. With Solmate secure, on the way back into the salon from the
cockpit, I grab Jen a Yingling from the cockpit fridge and I get myself a
hard seltzer.

The
wind is relentless. Jen and I largely ignore it, and while I do make
hourly checks around the vessel, we settle in to have dinner and then
watch some TV.

1123
I look over at Jen, she’s fast asleep. It has been a long day. I insist
she go to bed. She is reluctant as she doesn’t want to abandon me. I
assure her that having rested crew is important, and that if there is
any reason to need her I will call down to get her. She takes another
look at the weather models on the computer, and I point out that the
wind is now about 15 degrees west of south, which means the eye of the
event has passed our meridian and the worst is almost assuredly over.
Off to bed she goes.

Alone
on anchor watch, I read and watch TV. Every 20 minutes or so, I check
our position, the wind speed and direction and the location of the
mooring block obstruction relative to our chain. When the wind howls I
look and continue to see gusts into the low forties, each time thinking
that must be the end of it.

20220605 ABL 0323 Jen
emerges at the companionway door to see if I am OK. I am and I tell her
to go back to bed. Gale force winds continue to blow. Over the next 30
minutes the wind eases to
a near-gale, then to a strong breeze, then to a fresh breeze. Is it over?

0400 After
15 minutes of sustained winds below 20 knots, I head down to go to bed.
The house bank is at 93%, so I turn on our stateroom air conditioning
and after washing up, I join Jen in the bed.

1217
I awake, shut off the air conditioning and come up to the deck. The day
is sunny with a gentle breeze. Jen is at her computer. I make coffee
and look around the harbor. All the boats are in place. Kids that live
on some of the other catamarans are screaming and jumping into the
water. The house bank is at 97%. It’s like it never happened.

4) BIGGEST FISH CAUGHT (ON CAMERA )

Tropical Wave

This showed up on our doorstep looking for a handout! Its a Goliath Atlantic Grouper... about 5 feet long.

This was in the Dry Tortugas, FL

Blue
Oasis sailed into Garden Key Anchorage after a 9 hour sail from Key
West. We stayed in the Dry Tortugas National Park for 7 days with
sublime, calm weather. Skys clear as a bell, temp in the upper 80's and
wind less than 8 knots the whole week.

Skys clear as a bell, temp in the upper 80's and wind less than 8 knots the whole week. We snorkeled around the fort at both of the old piers and saw abundant marine life, beautiful coral and perfect water temperatures. We went out to Loggerhead Key and snorkeled at 'Little Africa' and also the Windjammer wreck. The wreck was amazing and well preserved. Fort Jefferson was fun as well, walking the ramparts and being amazed at the engineering done in the 1850's that's still in great shape today. It was our second visit and was even better than the first. We highly recommend a stop there but make sure you have everything you need. No stores, no ice, no cell phone service... your very basic, beautiful landmark Park.

Fort Jefferson appears out of the sea, from miles away. Built in the mid 1800’s of 16 million bricks.

Blue Oasis

Blue Oasis was hold up in Key West at anchor, waiting for the Northeries to
give way to an easy West Trade breeze. The breeze arrived and we set
sail for the Dry Tortugas. Pretty much 65nm West of Key West on the
southern route over the wreck of the Atocha sunk in 1622.

BLUE OASIS

The cays of the Dry Tortugas can be fierce and unpleasant in foul weather,
and just delightful in calm air. We had the later for 7 days, enjoying
exploring and snorkeling. The snorkel of the Little Africa and the
Windjammer wreck (1907) were both worth a couple of visits. Our fish
encounters were amazing from the giant Atlantic grouper that come to our
boat on 2 evenings, to snorkeling with a large school of 6 foot Tarpen
(we did not dangle anything for them to chomp on).

5) ROSIE 2 - PASSAGE REPORT

Rosie 2 Track

2022/05/25

Our rational for leaving on the 25th was to try and beat the tropical
depression currently forming down around Colombia. If we could make it
far enough east in 3 days time to clear Honduras and Nicaragua then we
could easily make the run into Panama before the depression spread
across the lower Caribbean Sea. Unfortunately we did not anticipate the
maelstrom that was already present along the eastern edge of the
gulfstream as it passed along the Yucatán channel. Weather charts showed
moderate seas and winds with some gusting but nothing like we saw once
we were out in it.

Current

As we departed Puerto Morales we experienced moderate winds and choppy but
not unruly seas. An hour into the journey Atom lost his breakfast, our
first indicator! As we approached the north side of Cozumel we were
being pulled into a lull created by the lee of the island. We were
forced to tack north to clear the island which took almost 4 hrs for a
tack that should have been less than 2 hrs. Winds changed direction
coming more from the  east than northeast and seas began to
increase from 4 ‘ to better than 6’. Our progress as we attempted to
head south slowed to 2 kts or about 3 mph. This was with sail and engine
at 3/4 throttle. The gulfstream was pushing directly against us at
almost 6mph! Seas began to increase as night came on and swells from the
east grew to 8 and 10’. Winds increased to a steady 25 kts gusting to
35. Through the night we began slamming head into these massive walls of
water. As we tried to find an angle to take them at we began getting
hit with current waves coming at 90 degrees to the easterlies. This
combination made for a most uncomfortable ride throughout the
night.

We would gain a little speed then get slammed and completely stop the
boat. Rigging would shudder and the entire boat shook as we got hit.
Standing up or moving about was near impossible. We all tried resting
but the constant rolling and banging made it impossible to relax enough
to sleep. None of us have ever been seasick but in this we all had a
feeling of mild nausea. We began to cramp which looking back on it, was
probably dehydration.

Rosie 2

We continued on this trek for almost 8 hrs hoping that eventually we could
break the grip of the gulfstream and be able to make some heading south
and east. After 24 hrs we looked and we were still only around 40 miles
from where we had started. That’s only making an avg speed of around
1.5 mph!!

Eventually we decided to try and break through running with the current so we
tacked north. We hoped to slice through at a narrow angle making our way
northeast. This was a much smoother ride but still bumpy with
occasional east swells banging into us. We were making 7 to 8 kts but
the big swells kept pushing us back into the middle of the stream and
just would not release us!

After 30 hrs we were all exhausted and beaten. Cris and I discussed options
but nothing would get us across. Finally I made the decision to turn
back before someone got injured or we did damage to the boat. It was the
smart thing to do even though we all hated to give up.

I’ve sailed for 40 years and this was definitely the worst seas I’ve been
in. Cris made a very profound statement today that really struck home
with me “ cruising is supposed to be about enjoying the journey”. It’s
so true! I think sometimes it’s easy to loose focus on the objective and
become fixated on the result.

Well no matter where we go from here, it will be about enjoying the journey!!

9) SUN HALO IN CHIAPAS 🇲🇽 MEXICO

SUN HALO

When you see a halo around the sun, that is an indicator that there is
moisture high in the atmosphere. If the halo is followed by high, thin,
wispy cirrus clouds, then there is a storm system approaching you. It's
typically 24 to 48 hours away - Here comes Hurricane Agatha

The extraordinary sight is created by tiny ice crystals high in the clouds,
about 5km to 10km above the ground. Each crystal behaves like a prism
and mirror, refracting and reflecting sunlight, splitting the light into
colors and sending shafts of light outwards into a circle.

Message from the panama government. Expect wet weather!

GOVERNMENT MINISTRY

REPUBLIC OF PANAMA. - NATIONAL GOVERNMENT -

prevention notice

Due to displacement of Tropical Wave #1 over our region

The
National System for National Protection (SINAPROC) informs the public
that it maintains a Prevention and Monitoring Notice due to the
displacement and evolution of Tropical Wave #1 in the coming days over
the region.

The
areas under notice until May 19, 2022 are: Bocas del Toro, Ngábe Buglé
Comarca, Chiriquí, Veraguas, Los Santos, Herrera, Coclé, West Panama,
Panama, Darién, Emberá Wounaan Comarca, Colón, Guna Yala Comarca,
sectors mountainous and maritime areas of the Panamanian Caribbean and
Pacific.

Currently,
tropical wave #1 is located over Venezuela, moving at a speed of 28
KM/H immersed in a favorable environment for the development of clouds
and storms towards Colombia and Panama. During the week, these
conditions will increase the rains over the national territory,
according to the Hydrometeorology Directorate of the Electricity
Transmission Company, S.A, (ETESA). ETESA forecasts accumulated rainfall
per day that could reach between 40 mm to 90 mm or liters of water per
square meter.

SINAPROC warns to be careful in the event of sudden flooding of rivers and streams.

PREVENTION
MEASURES Try to be aware of the updates of the prevention notices. Do
not risk your life trying to cross streams. If it is raining, avoid
driving at high speeds.

The Backstory:

“We
didn’t want to ‘settle down’ into family life  - we wanted to fill
it with travel and adventure, so in 2017 quit our jobs, took the kids
out of school and set sail around the world!”

the beginning

Embarking
on this  journey - leaving behind friends, family, school, jobs
and our home - has to be the most difficult decision we have ever
made.

We’d worked in the marine industry for many years, set up RYA training centers,
skippered for sailing companies, crewed on ocean passages and worked
with UK rescue services (RNLI), but becoming traveling liveaboards while
home schooling kids has tested our parenting and sailing skills to the
max and challenged every fiber of our being.

This
is the story of our journey – the highs and lows, why we continue to do
it and how we see the future. It’s also the opening chapters of our
kids’ lives, and we want those chapters to lay the foundation of an epic
story of high adventure and world travel, of self-sufficiency and
resourcefulness, of stoicism and self worth .. and hopefully a bit of
fun!

We
began blogging the day we started looking for a sailboat, and our
Sailing YouTube Channel documents our journey from the very beginning -
from choosing a sailboat and leaving home to adapting to life afloat,
from home schooling and boat maintenance to traveling with kids and
making money while we travel. In short, it’s dedicated to families that
are considering an adventure of their own – to lay down a template and
in the words of Yewan, our youngest - “If you want to do it - DO IT!”

As a tropical Atlantic archipelago, the Turks and Caicos has historically had a past with pirates and privateers. One of the greatest remnants of piracy in the Turks and Caicos is in fact our country name, which basically translates to Pirate Islands, as it’s derived from the term Turks, which was a synonym for pirates in previous centuries, and cayo hico, a version of the indigenous Taino people’s name for an archipelago or island chain. During much of the ‘golden age of piracy’, from about the mid-1600s to mid-1700s, pirates were known to have operated and had bases in the Turks and Caicos.

6 ) LANDSAT 9 has launched

Landsat 9

September 27, 2021
Landsat
9 is an Earth observation satellite launched on 27 September 2021 from
Space Launch Complex-3E at Vandenberg Space Force Base on an Atlas V 401
launch vehicle.  NASA is in charge of building, launching, and
testing the satellite, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS)
operates the satellite, and manages and distributes the data archive.
It will be the ninth satellite in the Landsat program.

Landsat 9

 The
first image collected by Landsat 9, on Oct. 31, 2021, shows remote
coastal islands and inlets of the Kimberly region of Western Australia.
In the top middle section of the image, the Mitchell River carves
through sandstone, while to the left Bigge Island and the Coronation
Islands stand out in the Indian Ocean.

"The
data and images from Landsat 9 are expanding our capability to see how
Earth has changed over decades," Karen St. Germain, director of NASA's
Earth Science Division, said in the same statement. "In a changing
climate, continuous and free access to Landsat data, and the other data
in NASA's Earth observing fleet, helps data users, including city
planners, farmers and scientists, plan for the future."

In the case of the Panama Posse helps us navigate saver !

Landsat 9
Landdata

Landsat
9 carries two main instruments: the Operational Land Imager 2 (OLI-2),
which detects visible, near-infrared, and shortwave-infrared light in
nine wavelengths, and the Thermal Infrared Sensor 2 (TIRS-2), which
detects thermal radiation in two wavelengths used to measure Earth’s
surface temperatures. Together the instruments can provide users with
essential information about crop health, irrigation use, water quality,
wildfire severity, deforestation, glacial retreat, and urban expansion,
especially when put in the context of the long Landsat data record.

The
Panama Posse has over 150 gigs of Satellite Images for navigation
available for download - many have been sourced thanks to Landsat and
months of work by Panama Posse participants such as Rob on Avant.

 HELP CORAL REEFS

ADVENTURE SCIENTISTS AND UNIVERSITY OF GUADALAJARA TO CONDUCT MEXICAN CORAL REEF STUDIES WITH PANAMA POSSE VOLUNTEERS

Adventure Scientists

Adventure
Scientists is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports
scientists through the planning and execution of large-scale data
collection projects for scientific partners around the world. They
mobilize skilled adventure volunteers—hikers, sailors, skiers, divers,
and more—who operate on any scale from almost anywhere on Earth to
collect high-quality scientific data. This empowers scientists to think
bigger and access the data, public support, and funding they need to
achieve impact. Adventure Scientists’ goal is to accelerate
environmental and human health solutions.

Mexican Coral Reefs Project Information

Why:
Mexico’s Pacific Coast is harbor to some of the world’s most biodiverse
coral reefs. They support fishes, sharks, turtles, and other marine
life. They also buffer the coastline from intense storms and provide
livelihoods from fishing and tourism. Yet these reefs are imperiled by
ocean acidification, more frequent and powerful storms due to climate
change, and damage from tourism.

Impact:
Adventure Scientists is recruiting experienced diver volunteers to
provide Universidad de Guadalajara's Dr. Paola Rodríguez-Troncoso and
Dr. Amílcar Cupul Magaña with critical data to understand how climate
change and human pressure are impacting coral communities. The project
will provide hard data to government partners to support policy
recommendations that can protect these unique reefs into the future.

Who:
Eligible volunteers are experienced, conservation-minded divers with
access to boats who can commit to at least three dives within a year
along the Mexican Pacific coast in the Puerto Vallarta region.
Volunteers must provide their own dive equipment and have a minimum of
25 logged dives if a PADI certified open water diver, 15 if PADI
advanced open water diver, and 10 dives if they are a NAUI certified
advanced open water diver.

What:
At each field site, dive teams will swim five different 25-meter-long
belt transects parallel to the coast. Teams will swim each of the five
transects three times to:

Identify fish species, size, and ratio of adults to juveniles

Count abundance of sea urchin, sea stars, sea cucumbers, etc.

Categorize different coral types

Measure contour of seafloor

Where:
Field sites are predetermined (GPS coordinates provided) and no deeper
than ~12 meters. See the map on the project page for dive locations.

Mexico’s Pacific Coast is home to some of the world’s most biodiverse coral reefs, underwater communities that support sharks, turtles, and other marine life. They also support human lives by buffering the coastline from intense storms and providing livelihoods from fishing and tourism. Yet these reefs are imperiled by ocean acidification, more frequent and powerful storms due to climate change, and damage from human overuse.

Are
you interested in contributing to the protection of coral ecosystems on
the Mexican Pacific Coast? To learn how you can get involved in this,
and other Adventure Scientists projects, please join Founder/Executive
Director, Gregg Treinish, and University of Guadalajara scientists, Dr.
Paola Rodríguez-Troncoso and Dr. Amílcar Cupul Magaña, at 9 am, December
5th

For
qualified, registered divers interested in volunteering, the seminar
will be followed by an in-person field training, held exclusively for
Panama Posse affiliates, on December 6th beginning at 8 am. To learn

18) PANAMA POSSE CONVOYS

Convoys
ORGANIZED CONVOYS UNDER THE PANAMA POSSE Before Departure ‘Know before you go’ – Read Panama Posse updates, Noonsite (https://www.noonsite.com/ ), Caribbean Safety & Security Network https://safetyandsecuritynet.org/ ), and Facebook cruising groups (search for <destination name> and <cruising &/or cruisers> on Facebook) for the most recent reports prior to going anywhere for up to date information on the risk environment. Northeast Coast of Nicaragua and Honduras In the recent past, criminal elements have boarded, held at gunpoint and ransacked vessels passing through this region. The chart below is a composite of incidents between 2014 and 2020 for the area from the Caribbean Safety and Security Net (CSSN), linked here at https://safetyandsecuritynet.org/. Red pins represent attacks, and yellow pins represent attempted attacks.

These
violent incidents appear to be executed by “part-time pirates”,
fisherman who organize on an ad hoc basis and seize targets of
opportunity in the absence of effective law enforcement.  They do
not target larger commercial vessels at this time.

Geographically,
the Honduran and Nicaraguan east coasts do not provide harbor for
larger vessels and the national navies are small and poorly equipped to
deal with the issue, as they are small forces primarily designed for
dealing with coastal and riverine security.  The naval forces are
under-resourced.

As
the incidents normally occur well offshore, often between 75 and 125
miles from land, they are beyond VHF radio range from shore bases, and
in any case it is believed the relevant navies do not effectively
maintain a 24/7 radio watch. It is uncertain what other illegal
activities these part time pirates may engage in.

While
these areas are variously within the territorial waters or exclusive
economic zones of Colombia, Guatemala, or Honduras, they are not
effectively patrolled or policed by any of these states.  Adding
complication to the situation, some areas including the Serranilla Bank
are disputed territories.

Security and Safety Risks Associated with the Entire Coast of Venezuela

For
westbound vessels, a transit of the Venezuelan coast from Trinidad to
the ABCs and Columbia is often undertaken.  For vessels leaving
Colombia to points north, a close approach to the easternmost stretch of
the Venezuelan coast is also unavoidable.  There has also been an
increase in piracy activities in the coastal waters near Trinidad,
believed to be the actions of Venezuelan smugglers.

area.
