9) GOOD ANCHORAGE
ISLA ESCUDO VERAGUAS  🇵🇦  PANAMA

ISLA ESCUDO VERGARAS

Isla Escudo de Veraguas 🇵🇦 Panama

After
a month of enjoying some of what the archipelago of Bocas del Toro has
to offer, a nine day weather window presented itself to get to the San
Blas Islands, so we took it. We had found many really good snorkeling
areas and large areas of very healthy coral to our surprise, but the
time had come to say a temporary goodbye to Bocas. This long period of
calm seas afforded us a two day, one night stop at the island that has
turned out to be one of our favorite, Isla Escudo Vereguas. We had
wanted to stop there on our passage from Shelter Bay to Bocas, but the
conditions were far too rough.

Western Coral Reef on Isla Escudo Veraguas

Isla Escudo Veraguas  🇵🇦 Panama

The
island is fringed by a reef on most of three sides, with the west and
south sides affording good anchorage in sand. The seas were running only
about 3 feet from the northeast so the anchorages were calm, though the
diurnal winds in this area cause a chop to come from the mainland at
night. We anchored on the west side in about 27 feet of gin-clear water.
This beautiful island has dramatic underwater coral caves and drop-offs
as well as beautiful shallow snorkeling with large stands of elkhorn
and staghorn coral.

Northern Lagoon on Isla Escudo de Veraguas

Northern Lagoon on Isla Escudo de Veraguas  🇵🇦 Panama

The
island itself is equally dramatic. The south side has carved vertical
cliffs, beautiful beaches, small sea-caves and lush, overhanging
vegetation. The north side of the island is sheltered by a fringing
coral reef that protects the clear, shallow lagoons and channels from
the open ocean swell and surge. We circumnavigated the island in our
dingy within the protected confines of the lagoons, snaking our way
through the maze of channels and islets. The fish and scattered coral in
the channels can be seen in the crystal clear water from a kayak or
slow moving dinghy. We call it “dry snorkeling”. The channels were all
plenty deep for our short shaft outboard, though we did have to raise it
once over a large patch of sea grass. We loved it so much that the next
day we had an encore dingy trip before departing. If anyone has the
time fair weather to make this stop, it is well worth it.

17)  PREPARING FOR THE WORST
HOPING FOR THE BEST

DITCH BAG

https://stormtrysail.org/ditch-kit-dont-leave-home-without-it/

Last
week SY Raindancer, collided with a whale while sailing between the
Galapagos and the Marquesas.  The boat filled with water quickly
and sank.  In that time, they gathered essential items, deployed
their life raft and their dinghy.  Thankfully and incredibly, they
were rescued approximately 10 hours later.  The story is documented
here:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/travel/2023/03/20/sailboat-hits-whale-pacific-rescue/

In
preparing for the worst and hoping for the best, mariners consider what
they will take with them if they ever have to abandon their vessel this
quickly.  It is wise to keep essential safety items conveniently
at hand because, as was the case with Raindance, things can happen fast
and there may not be time to think or dig your ditch bag out from the
deep recesses of the salon locker.

There
are items to grab and there are items that people assemble in a Ditch
Bag or Abandon Ship Bag.  The list below is a guide and you may or
may not carry all of these items.  Some items may already be in a
well stocked life raft aboard your vessel.  Know your boat, your
crew, your gear and consider the following:

ITEMS TO GRAB include:

  • EPIRB and/or Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) or some sort
  • VHF Radio (Ideally fully charged because it sits in its charging cradle underway
  • Life Jackets (if they are not already on)
  • Satellite Phone (if offshore) and/or Cell Phone (if near shore)
  • Handheld GPS
  • Ditch Bag or Abandon Ship Bag
  • Water: some people keep 5 gallon Jerry jugs on their topsides
  • Bucket
  • Food: Canned Goods, bread, cheese...anything readily at your fingertips.
  • Powerful Flashlight
  • Signaling gear (Flares, sea dye, etc...)

ITEMS to pre-assemble in a Ditch Bag

  • Water: Pouches of water and/or a handheld reverse osmosis water maker
  • Some Food: Vacuum sealed, non-perishable, non-salty foods like nuts, dried fruit, trail mix, dried meat, granola bars
  • Basic Fishing Gear: Fishing hooks and line and/or spear
  • Basic Galley items: small cutting board, folding knife, spoon, lighter, cup, and can opener, plastic bag
  • Basic Signaling Gear: Small mirror, flares,
  • Crew Information and money in watertight container: copy of passports, an amount of cash and/or credit card
  • Sun Protection: Sunscreen, lip balm, hat/s, sunglasses, long sleeved shirt/s, space blanket
  • Swimming goggles can be used for eye protection and looking underwater.
  • First Aid kit and Medication
  • Duct Tape in a gallon Ziplock bag
  • Compass, Rite in the Rain pad of paper and pen also in plastic bag.
  • Extra Batteries for any device that needs batteries.
  • Cordage

BAHAMAS PARKS SHUT DOWN ONLINE PAYMENTS

Exuma
Cays Land & Sea Park has shut down online credit card payments
temporarily following concerns over fraudulent credit charges that
appeared on system users credit cards.  An investigation is
underway to discern whether this hack is in the Parks online system or
not.

The
Park uses an online registration service to reserve and collect payment
for overnight moorings and contributions that support the park system.
Multiple cruisers to the Park have recently all found their credit
cards compromised prompting them to notify the Park system.  Their
actions taken during this temporary shut down on their online payments
will hopefully make the system more secure when they open it back up.

The
cruiser reporting the fraud says credit card fraud "is a very common
problem experienced by just about everyone who has used credit cards
here."  Cruisers advise that credit cards can be compromised
anywhere from a local eatery to a grocery store to a fuel stop.

Credit
card companies will reimburse victims of fraud and replace cards.
There are also other ways to avoid credit card fraud altogether.
See this areticle for more information.

Tulum is the site of a pre-Columbian Mayan walled city which served as a major port for Coba, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. The ruins are situated on 39 ft cliffs along the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya and achieved its greatest prominence between the 13th and 15th centuries. Maya continued to occupy Tulum for about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico, but the city was abandoned by the end of the 16th century. ruins are situated on 39 ft cliffs along the east coast of the Yucatán
Peninsula.  Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by
the Maya and achieved its greatest prominence between the 13th and 15th
centuries. Maya continued to occupy Tulum for about 70 years after the
Spanish began occupying Mexico, but the city was abandoned by the end of

DRAKE BAY 🇨🇷 COSTA RICA

Bahía Drake (Drake Bay) is a genrious bay on the north side of the Osa Peninsula on the coast of southwestern Costa Rica.

This bay is believed to be a port used by Sir Francis Drake during his raids on the Spanish Main in the 16th century and the location of one of the British pirate's fabled hidden treasures.

The bay is off the beaten track and can be reached by plane, boat, and car (ideally a 4x4 vehicle) during the dry season. Because of lack of bridges, driving to Bahía Drake is challenging and not recommended for visitors. Most of the eco lodges are located along the beach.

BOCAS DEL TORO 🇵🇦 PANAMA

Sloth at red Frog

The wildlife at Red Frog Marina is incredible. In 30 minutes we saw 5 adult sloths, two juveniles, two giant Iguanas and three red frogs!

Bocas del Toro 1

After waiting 4 weeks for a weather window to go to the San Blas Islands that we so enjoyed last year, we decided to hang a left from Limon Bay instead of a right and sail for the unexplored (to us) archipelago of Bocas Del Toro. We spent a week or so at the southern end, exploring Laguna Bluefield, Crawl Cay and some of the many mangrove islets, including the quiet, well protected Cayo Gallego. We then sailed up to Red Frog Marina where we are currently waiting for a parts order.

Laguna Bluefield has a few very isolated villages with very friendly children that paddle out in dug-out canoes to anchored sailboats to sell fruit, stare, hang out hope for a snack and talk a little. Since we were only one of two boats in the entire bay, we had a lot of visitors! Two boys, cousins I believe, were particularly friendly and offered to take us to a Cascada on the other side of their village. We kayaked up a meandering river and then hiked up a hill to their village and then on to the falls where we took photos and enjoyed the views. Although the strong trades prevented us from snorkeling the reefs at the mouth of this bay there are many opportunities when the weather is more settled. This gorgeous bay is not to be missed.

Bocas del Toro

Our Teenage Guide to the Falls & Joan Celebrating the Completion of our Falls Hike

Another highlight of our time here has been Red Frog Marina; part of a 1500 acre resort that has preserved most of the jungle within. The well maintained resort facilities are spread amongst this vast jungle area and are connected with gravel and brick paver roads. The variety of wildlife we have seen was surprising, including sloths, giant lizards, toucans, parrots, monkeys, and yes, red frogs! As a marina tenant we have access to the various resort restaurants, bars, beaches, activities, free water taxi to Bocas Town, and the pool that overlooks a reef fringed bay on the Caribbean side of the island. And, although we keep reading that this Bocas Del Toro is not well known for diving or snorkeling, we have found some beautiful spots!

Once we have our new our parts order, we will continue on to explore the northern portion of the archipelago!

13) ⚠️ GREASY LINES ALERT 🇵🇦 PANAMA

ALERT

FOR YOUR INFORMATION, SAILORS TO TAKE PRECAUTION AT THE GATUN MOORING AND BE AWARE

ALTHOUGH WE WASH LINES SOME STAIN WILL NOT COME OFF FROM THE LINES, THEY MAY NOTICE WHEN WE HAND OVER LINES WILL HAVE STAIN BUT WILL NOT DIRTY YOUR BOAT, HOWEVER DURING TRANSIT THEY MAY COME BACK WITH FRESH GREASE FROM THE WALL AND DIRTY YOUR YACHT

We here to request the attention and action to be taken by the Autoridad del Canal de Panamá for the following situation which is affecting sailors and agents, we have been noticing for a period of time that our lines are returning oily from the wall rails and shredded.

We have been notified from one customer the reason lines are getting shredded and also creating a dangerous scenario for sailors meanwhile at Gatun lake mooring, since it is windy and there is a lot of strain combined with the rusted mooring buoy which is requiring maintenance.

This may cause lines to break and make boats drift during night and create a higher incident to the traffic movement in Gatun.

On the other hand lines are getting a lot of grease with the locomotive railways and causing heavy stain on sailing boats hulls.

Hi Posse

We are in Port Antonio Jamaica. I’m looking for mechanic info. After wrapping a net around our props, we are down 1 engine. The travel lift here (44’ catamaran) is broken with an unknown fix date. It’s our yanmar saildrive that has the problem- beyond what we can do (we are quite handy and have rebuilt/upgraded them before). Ideas for a mechanic here or thoughts on limping to Panama? (Note- yes, cats have 2 engines but at slower speeds -docking and maneuvering- they need 2 engines. Thoughts and ideas are much appreciated.

23 ) PANAMA POSSE YACHT FOR SALE
WITH PANAMA YACHT BROKER

https://www.yachtworld.com/yacht/1984-passport-42-8683608/

PANAMA POSSE YACHT 1984 Passport 42 For Sale listed for $147,500.

The current owners purchased Boundless in 2017 and embarked upon a a two-year refit in preparation for cruising. The refit included replacing the engine, the majority of the onboard systems, sails and rigging, and the addition of a number of safety and convenience amenities to make the boat offshore-ready. The very knowledgeable owners have mainly lived on board since 2019 and have constantly maintained and upgraded the boat as they cruised from San Francisco to Caribbean Panama. Boundless is now represented as a turnkey vessel with all systems maintained and in working order.

Boundless is an exceptionally attractive boat, fully equipped with a no-expense-spared approach to systems and safety. The attention to detail and consistent care and maintenance are evident. Ready to go!!!

Boundless

The Passport 42 is a robust bluewater sailing vessel. Designed as a ‘cruiser/racer’ by Stan Huntingford, the Passport 42 has lively sailing characteristics while offering a safe, stable and comfortable cruising platform.

The cutter rig provides for a range of sail options, and with wide clear decks, a deep cockpit and the addition by the current owners of solid (1 ¼”) solid lifelines all around, the boat inspires confidence at sea.

The Passport carries it’s 12-foot-10-inch-wide beam well aft, providing a roomy interior for its 42 feet overall. The stern is an attractive fuller ‘double-ender’ that eliminates any ‘slap’ at anchor and does a fine job of keeping water out of the cockpit in a following sea.

https://www.yachtworld.com/yacht/1984-passport-42-8683608/

Underwater, the Passport 42 has a deep forefoot that blends into a fin keel with a long chord, and an elongated, molded strut with bearing to support the prop shaft. Further aft is a beefy skeg protecting the rudder. This tried-and-true configuration is reassuring to many bluewater sailors.

The fiberglass hull is thick in the right places. The lead ballast in the keel is fully encapsulated with fiberglass, which obviates the need for keel bolts. The hull is solid fiberglass below the waterline and cored with foam above. The deck is cored with encapsulated 4-inch teak squares to limit water migration.

Like most Taiwan built boats of the era, the interior shows impressive custom joinery and robust bulkheads tabbed to the hull.

This stunning example of a Passport 42, fully upgraded and ready to go must be seen in person. Come visit us in Panama, and escape the winter blues.

3) ⚠️ PIRACY ALERT PANAMA

 Hey
guys Gabby here from Voodoo. We just got back to service and decided to
share what happened in Las Perlas, Panama. So we were anchored off isla
Contradora, I was outside having my coffee when a fellow cruiser (
"JEANNE / Ford, Michelle & Izzy their small dog )  pulled up
super close to us and told us they have been robbed and needed us to
call the police. We were not robbed but helped a fellow cruiser who was.
We told them to anchor and went over to help. This boat was anchored
off isla del ray at Isla del Espiritu Santo Panama ( it got great
reviews on navionics) at 8pm small skiff approached their boat super
fast ( so fast their dog didn't even bark). 3 men in total boarded,
before the women got outside she already had a gun in her face. They
told the couple to lie down face down in the cockpit. While one guy held
a gun to their heads the other two guys pulled EVERYTHING out of the
boat, closets, bilge, everywhere. They took anything of value. They took
tools, ipads, phones, hand held radios, everything. They took the gas
can to the dinghy (since they couldn't detach the motor). They then
made them go in the bow room and cut the vhf radio wire as they
left. We tried to find authorities at isla Contradora but there are no
police there. They told them they had to report it in Panama city. We
decided to leave after that as well since we did not want anything
similar to happened to us. The couple is fine thankfully they are not
hurt at all, but being robbed at gunpoint is very scary.  If anyone
has any questions I will try to answer them the best I can but keep in
mind I just helped them the next morning.

NOTE: We are waiting for a first hand account from the vessel

Piracy

"LOCATION:

correctly). Ford and Michelle and Izzy the small dog. It's Fontaine
Pajot cat US flagged.

The perpetrators  were headed north after robbery the bastards."

The
boat came from the south and left to the north, Ford thinks to a small
town near there? He thinks he would recognize the panga.

They
went to Contadora police in the morning who said they only deal with
minor crime. They reported to aeronaval(?) here at La Playita Marina.
Police(?) in Panama City shut today. Reporting it on Monday." Reported

Golfito Report!

There
is a small and very rustic restaurant high on the ridge above Golfito
with an awesome view. Food isn’t bad either but you are definitely
paying for the view. There is a rickety little observation platform you
can pay to go out on for an even better look down into the harbor. You
can locate this on google maps as “Mirador Las Torres

donde
Jovita”. Local people think nothing of hiking up here on a weekend
morning for excercise. It was about 5-1/4 miles from the marina. Hike or
drive the road up through the jungle is terrific. There is also a
lovely vista from an intermediate spot much closer to sea level
identified as “Mirador La Torre Cerro Adams”. The “torres” are the radio
antenna high on the ridge visible from many parts of town.

There
is an interesting boat ride, hire one or use a fast dinghy, from deep
inside Golfito Harbor through dense mangrove swamp to the mouth of the
Rio Coto. This is the protected, that is avoiding open water, route to
Zancudo. Passable...

Navigator3

Easy,
if time consuming international self-checkout in Golfito. Longest wait
is at the bank to pay for the zarpe. Standard fare: Immigration (across
the street from Samoa Hotel) then Port Captain(on access road to new
marina) then bank(top of the hill) then customs(in duty free zone past
airport), sequence not relevant for these two, then back to Port Captain
to collect your completed zarpe.

Bruce
GOLFITO

Of
course I got to immigration behind the guy with a sack of 280 passports
so that caused a delay:). If you don’t want to deal Bruce Blevins,
above, is great and can do it all. He and his staff are also
surprisingly forthcoming with all kinds of information and will tell you
exactly what you need to do even if you’re doing it yourself.

11) STARLINK FEEDBACK JANUARY 2023

STARLINK ON BOATS, YACHTS, RV'S AND REMOTE LOCATIONS
  1. In
Red Frog Marina. Plugged it in. Picking a movie on Netflix that
evening. Good (but not great) service to St Andres, Columbia.
  2. Hey
there, as requested here is our experience with Starlink. I’m still
working full time as an iOS developer for a company in California. As
such I need to have internet most weekdays. We came down from California
as far as Chiapas, hopping from cell signal to cell signal and moving
only on weekends. Last May in Chiapas we got Starlink shipped to us (the
older round dishy) and since then have decided to head back up to
cruise the Sea of Cortez before we leave Mexico. We had only gone as far
up as La Paz due to the scarcity of cell coverage up in the Sea. It’s
pretty much a game changer. We are currently in Zihuatanejo, having just
spent an entire month in the bays of Huatulco. Previously we only
stayed in Tangolunda and Marina Chahue. This time with Starlink we were
able to visit most of the bays. It does draw down our batteries though. I
have it trimmed down to just run off of DC without the inverter and
have the internal motors disabled. Still it seems to consume a steady 3A
and more when it boots up or it’s doing intense data transfers. We have
been turning it off at night to save power and will probably need to
add more solar to balance our energy budget. It’s also great to be able
to check the weather at any time on passage and stay in touch. Although
sometimes I wish we could be more “off the grid”.
  3. Both
of us still working remotely while cruising, so a robust data
connection for Zoom calls has been a requirement. Before we got Starlink
in May 2022, we would arrange our passagemaking based on where we would
have access to cellular data and/or wifi via booster. This meant, as
much as possible, we would travel on weekends (or take days off), and
anchor / stay at marinas only in locations with access to a data
network. Not having access to a decent connection (e.g. slow and/or
interrupted) was an endless source of frustration. Starlink has
completely changed that. Shortly after we installed Starlink (in La Paz,
Mexico), we travelled to Isla San Francisco for a test run. Sure
enough, we had a robust connection and were able to stay connected
throughout the journey. It was amazing! We were liberated from limited
infrastructure!  Our cruising grounds are now defined to where we
have access to Starlink. None in South Pacific? We’ll wait? Available in
Pacific Central America and Caribbean? Off we go!  In addition to
enabling remote working, Starlink also serves as a Safety device (real
time weather reporting and communication), and entertainment (streaming
videos). As and when coverage is truly global and robust, we’ll replace
our SSB and Iridium with Starlink only.  It’s a real game changer!
  4. Pros:
    Being
able to work/make $ in remote areas where there is no service. This
allowed us to sail on week days when there were good weather windows and
not just motor sail to accommodate a week day work schedule.

Pretty cheap $135/mo and I think it’s half that cost if you buy a Mexican one.
We had service the down the entire pacific coast Baja which is an internet dead zone.
Allows us to contact marinas or agencies ahead of time for parts/services.
Makes it easier to connect with friends/family.
    Cons:
It’s a bit power hungry: uses 5-8 AMPs of juice while on (up to 8 when satellite moves)
After about 30 miles offshore it does not always work… but sometimes it does.
    Easier
to be in the phone more and not disconnect from society a bit (which is
one of the things I love about being in remote areas)

    Some
people have reported being “kicked off/geofenced” after 2 months of
being out of the country of origin. We are about to hit our 2 month mark
    so I’ll keep you posted.
  5. By far weather a matter of minutes if not seconds compared to any other means Contact with family and friends Trivia!
    Cheers
  6. We
got our starlink in Chiapas. It has been a game changer. While in
Chiapas we had marginal cell service and very limited WiFi. Once we got
starlink I was able to enable WiFi calling and take care of all
emergencies without having to take a taxi in to Tapachula to sit at
Starbucks when we needed internet. When we arrived at Bahia del Sol
starlink didn’t work, we had marginal WiFi and decent local cell
service. After about a month it started working, once again we were able
to take care of any issues that arose easily. We had nothing while in
the Golfo de Fonseca. When we arrived at Puesta del Sol Nicaragua, we
were greeted with marginal WiFi and very weak 3g cell service. Here
there is nowhere to go if you need internet access, but here Starlink
    works.
  7. Hi,
We have had it since Panama. At that stage it did not work in Panama as
the government had not signed up but now they have. It worked all te
way from there to 12 miles off Belize then stopped as trey have not
signed up either. Worked well once departing or Mexico and all the way
to Jamaica.  It stops working in really rough seas and will cut in
and out. Often works better than the local networks.  Not a
replacement for iridium at the moment due to to inconsistency in bad
weather but saying that it is much quicker and often picked up before
the iridium had finished downloading the weather. Cheers
  8. There
is one word that comes up using Starlink on board a boat and that is
“game changer” This is when a new disruptive technology comes along and
within a year, becomes the standard for boaters. A year ago, Starlink
had 70,000 users worldwide , and now they have 1.4 million We now have
high speed internet on board, which means we can get immediate
Predictwind Offshore weather routing, can do Facetime calls with our
family, do our banking, watch Youtube on our cell phone whilst underway
and then enjoy a movie on TV, all from the comfort of our boat while
underway or at anchor. Before Christmas, I had uninterrupted service on
my non stop run from La Paz to Puerto Vallarta. As I type this, I have
just left Zihuatanejo en route on a 360 non stop trip to Huatulco, all
    while being connected.

    Thank you Elon Musk!
  9. You
asked about starlink. We have just used it in Mexico since October.
We’ve crossed from puerto Vallarta to Baja, north in the sea of Cortez,
and back again to Mazatlán. We’ve had a few random drops for a few
minutes here and there, but generally it has been very reliable. And
fast - faster than our home internet in the US.  It’s a game
changer in several ways - we were able to FaceTime with our daughter to
learn that we will be grandparents - so staying connected with family is
so much easier.  Getting weather forecasts is easier than with the
iridium (and at half the price of the iridium). We are able to manage a
short term rental in the US with starlink - we just couldn’t do it
otherwise.  The dark side and challenge is to not let access to the
internet rob us of the experiences we are here to find. It takes a bit
of discipline. Overall, an amazing positive tool for cruising.
  10. 22-23
is our second year full-time cruising . We have been exploring the
Pacific side of Mexico and the gulf of California. We installed our
Starlink this year.  In our first year we had very little coverage
around Baja (outside and inside). Outside we could sometimes send a text
message. One time we had a family issue and it took days to find wifi,
finally in Bahaia Asunción. Pacific Mexico we got a Mexican SIM
(Movistar) and spent many, many hours learning to use it properly
(refills, management, unlocking phones, etc). Our provider in the US,
t-mobile threatened to turn us off three times. Inside Baja in the
spring we went weeks without anything but small texts and emails through
Iridium.  Starlink has made communication far easier, we hardly
think about being in touch, we’ve saved tons on local SIMs, and T-Mobile
hasn’t threatened to cut us off. It took propwr planing to mount and
power the Starlink but so far it’s been a real benefit.
  11. How
we use our SL, it’s a two edge sword, information paralysis &
superior unlimited access to the internet right from my boat.

    - set my iPhone to utilize WiFi calling.  No more searching for local telco chips an recharging these with more bits
for weather and route planning I can quickly utilize a variety of products; NOAA, windy, predict wind
    - update my onboard electronics with the latest firmware anytime
    - pursue remote work opportunities
    - troubleshoot onboard systems effectively, download diagrams, order items online, chat with systems experts
    - download charts, guides, reference material for travel
    - 1st mate is happy, cause it just works
    Summary,
All online activities are done more quickly; security is no longer an
issue/concern for banking an purchasing things. No more trying to best
manage a limited amount of data available….

And I can stream online content whenever I want.
Sometimes I need to turn it off, just put down the device(s) and enjoy the here and now.
    Regards,

STARLINK

Lamanai
is renowned for its exceptionally long occupation spanning three

through the Spanish and British Colonial periods, into the 20th
century.
