SY TIAMAT 🇺🇸 Stephanie & Owen – Fountaine Pajot 44’

ABOUT THE DIESEL BUG

Vessel
in the the tropics may check the stored diesel. Fuel in tanks
deteriorates over time, as it reacts with the oxygen in the air.
Usually, fuel can stay in a usable condition under storage for up to a
year, after which it may begin to develop sediments. Fuel is not just
affected by these residues, but also bacteria and fungi.

Water
that forms in fuel tanks due to condensation (when the tanks heat up
during the day and cool down at night and are not full, for example),
creates the perfect petri dish for bacteria. One of the most common
microorganisms that can grow under these circumstances is the diesel
bug, deteriorates your fuel and create a sludge capable of damaging your
engine.

Once you get underway it shushes around and the fuel pickup hose quickly gets clogged. The bug clogs the fuel system.

bug

ACTUAL CAUSES

  •     Humidity in the air
  •     Fuel tank condensation
  •     Fuel tank insulation
  •     Air leak on seals on fuel tank filler cap inc damaged o-rings
  •     Poor fuel station storage quality
  •     Low volume of sales at fuel station

diesel

REMEDIES

Once you have the bug ...

1) Separate the water from the diesel

2) Shock and kill the diesel bug with biocides

3) Remove sediments from the bottom of your tank

To Prevent the bug

1) Fill the tank

2) Use a fuel filter to take on fuel from the pump

3) Use Enzymes to prevent the bug from forming in the first place

Recent report from SY COURAGE :

Our
Panama Canal Northern transit is done! We have experienced a manmade
marvel and know what it feels like to be on a six-lock water escalator
with a yacht. This has been an incredible experience - the engineering
of it all over 100 years ago boggles the mind; the professionalism of
all the lock workers and hired crew and pilot; the test of close-quarter
maneuvers required at all times to stay where you need to be; nesting
and un-nesting in really strong currents and narrow passages which test
your skills and nerves; the delicious food of breakfast burritos, ham
& cheese sandwiches, chips and salsa, and a lasagna, garlic bread
and salad Kristine served made the entire passage a culinary
extravaganza; and the elation of completing a dream passage is now woven
into our tapestry called life. Truly that was a great day! And,
we thank Erick Galvez for his stewardship and excellent instructions,
equipment rentals and line handlers. Everything progressed where, when,
and how as Erick said it would...

SHARING INTEL ON CHART ACCURACY

Blue line drawn in over chart showing large actual reef extension to be cautious of.

SY FRENCH KISSING LIFE  Trip Report:

FYI all, here at the eastern end of San Blas, (Panama) just
off village of Ustupo, the Navionics charts are completely off
regarding the reef indicated above. If passing this way, take note.

As
we were approaching the supposed safe area indicated on the chart to
continue moving out and away from shore, northbound, we could see
breaking waves in a miles long line. Thought we were in the wrong place
initially, but eventually figured out that it is simply unmarked. The
reef that is indicated on Navionics probably extends at about 2 miles
farther west. Submerged at all times, but in high seas, it creates a
surf line.

Also, the Bauhaus waypoints have been spot on throughout this section of coast.

11) WATER MAKER MEMBRANE CARE

image

Presently
Panama Posse members are well in the middle of their cruising 'season'
Regular use and maintenance of all our onboard systems is a big
part of life afloat.  Rich Boren of Cruise RO watermakers recently
shared an article about watermakers maintenance.  In it he
describes the typical lifespan of RO Membranes and what 'bad practices'
to avoid when living aboard and desalinizing water as a standard
practice aboard.  Sharing here to spread the wisdom from his
experience:

The
RO Membranes have a realistic lifespan of 5-7yrs.  The Membranes
are rated for 24Hours/Day 365Days/Year, so you will never wear a
membrane out early from over-using it.  In our experience the
reason membranes fail early is from what we call, CDT or "Client
Destructive Testing"...🤐

CDT consists of things like:

1. Letting the water maker sit for the off season without proper system storage reagents inside.

2.
Not keeping a Fresh Activated Carbon filter in your freshwater
flush loop and allowing Chlorine to oxidize and destroy the membrane.
What is the definition of "Fresh"?  Change it every 6
calendar months from the day it first gets wet...not 6 months of use,
but from the day it gets wet.

3.
Too long of intervals between running or fresh water flushing when out
cruising resulting in your product water getting "rotten egg smelly".
Doing this one time won't destroy the membrane, but that smell is
from rotting/dead animals in your water maker giving off hydrogen
sulfide gas.  Every time you do it, you are taking months away from
your Membrane life.

4.
Freeze Damage when the water maker is left in a freezing environment
without proper protection by using Propylene Glycol as a Preservative
and Winterizing agent.  (Another solution is to never keep your
boat where it freezes...stay in the warm Tropics my friends!

Cheers

From Rich Boren. Cruise RO

15) MEET THE FLEET ⛵ SY PINTA

Maarten, Marianne, Daniel (11), & Matias (9)

Hi,
we’re Maarten, Marianne, Daniel (11) and Matias (9), on board sv Pinta.
We’re a Dutch family, sailing towards the Netherlands, where we aim to
arrive coming summer. We (Maarten and Marianne) left the Netherlands in
2011 with Pinta, a steel van de Stadt Caribbean 40. We sailed south
towards Argentina and Chile and we thoroughly enjoyed Tierra del Fuego
and Patagonia. In spring 2013 Daniel was born in Valdivia, Chile. Once
he was big enough and we felt comfortable sailing again, we went onto
the Pacific. From Juan Fernandez to Easter Island, the Marquesas and the
Tuamotus, we went up to Hawaii and then made landfall again in Sitka,
Alaska. We slowly sailed down along the coast towards Vancouver Island,
as by that time our second son, Matias was on the way. He was born in
Victoria, Canada at the end of 2014.

As we didn’t feel like sailing many long distances with two small
children at that time, we decided to stop for a while. We found work
teaching at an International school in Armenia, so we left the boat on
Vancouver Island and went there. After five fantastic years in Armenia,
we changed to a similar school in Northern Italy and stayed for three
years.

With
the boys growing up, but before high school age, we felt it was a good
time to come back to the boat and take a year together with the four of
us and sail back to the Netherlands. Last fall, we sailed down the west
coast of North America towards Panama and having just transited the
canal, we feel we are about halfway home. In the coming months, we’ll
make our way north in the Caribbean to cross the Atlantic in May.

We
have had a wonderful trip so far. Being on the boat with the four of
us, spending time together, exploring, swimming, sailing, but also doing
chores and school together feels really good. Simultaneously, it also
feels really good to sail home. It is time for us the settle, stay in
one place for a while and have the boys enjoy school, friends ,and
family throughout their teenage years. At least, that’s the plan for
now…

1. KNOW THE SAFETY CONTEXT OF PLACES YOU PLAN TO CRUISE

  • Familiarize yourself with the Caribbean Safety Network
  • Talk with fellow posse members that have gone places you plan to go.
  • Be open minded, courteous and respectful of locals.
  • Follow your gut.  Go where and when you feel safe.

2. KNOW REPATRIATION LAWS IN THE COUNTRIES YOU PLAN TO CRUISE TO WHEN TAKING CREW ACROSS INTERNATIONAL BORDERS

  • different countries have different rules.
  • know the rules where you are going
  • long
passages can strengthen crew relations...they can also ruin crew
relations.  Be very considerate when bringing on crew and crossing
    international borders.

4)  “Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't after you.”

Make 4 left turns to see if you are being followed
( unless you ar looking for a parking spot )

The
theory behind this is that if you make 4 turns then you are
successfully completing a circle from your original starting point. If
the person/car is still behind you after you have made a circle, you are
most likely being followed.

In that case make your way to the nearest 5 star hotel and ask to speak with the hotels security officer

18)  MUST SEE:

COCOS ISLAND NATIONAL PARK, COSTA RICA  🇨🇷

In
December 2021 Costa Rican President, Carlos Alvarado, signed a decree
expanding the Cocos Island National Park, increasing the fully protected
area in their Pacific waters by almost 53,000 square kilometers.

Cocos
Island National Park, located 550 km off the Pacific coast of Costa
Rica, is the only island in the tropical eastern Pacific with a tropical
rainforest. Its position as the first point of contact with the
northern equatorial counter-current, and the myriad interactions between
the island and the surrounding marine ecosystem, make the area an ideal
laboratory for the study of biological processes. The underwater world
of the national park has become famous due to the attraction it holds
for divers, who rate it as one of the best places in the world to view
large pelagic species such as sharks, rays, tuna and dolphins.

The
Committee inscribed Cocos Island National Park under natural criteria
and  because of the critical habitats the site provides for marine
wildlife including large pelagic species, especially sharks.

Isla
Coco was not always so protected.  The island is said to have been
discovered by a Spanish pilot, Joan Cabezas, in 1526. Thanks to its
palm trees and plentiful drinking water, this oceanic island became very
well known. During the 17th and 18th centuries, it served as an
excellent hide-away for the pirates who flourished along the Pacific
coast of Spanish America.  Supposedly there are at least three
buried treasures on the island.  Fishing and extracting activities
are banned at Isla Cocos so the fabled treasures remain....or do they?

6) SAILING AND CRUISING LEGEND JIMMY CORNELL

SURVEYS THE GLOBAL MOVEMENT OF CRUISING BOATS

PANAMA POSSE AMAZON SIDETRIP

Cruising
World Magazine just published an interesting article by Jimmy Cornell
about the global movement of cruising vessels.  Jimmy Cornell has a
passion for data.  He has conducted multiple surveys for almost 40
years to get a sense of how many boats are out cruising, where boats
are cruising, and what kinds of boats are cruising.

Some
may find aspects of his report surprising, others may find his report
exactly as expected.  Nonetheless, the numbers are interesting to
consider.  He looks at hotspots in three different Oceans: the
Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Indian.  He shares numbers of boats
that checked into various hotspots in 2022 as compared to 2010 and 2016.

In
the Pacific Ocean one of the Cornell's datapoints is the number of
boats going through the Panama Canal from the north and the south.
Many Panama Posse boats are among the boats going through the
Canal this season.  SV COURAGE will be one of the northbound boats in the Panama Canal this season.  For now they are enjoying sailing in Panama Bay.

Jimmy
Cornell has been a remarkable influence and inspiration in the
Bluewater Cruising world for decades.  He has published over a
dozen boos on the subject, circumnavigated the globe multiple times, and
inspired countless people to taste the salt in the air and the freedom
on the water themselves.

In
a conversation with Helen Fretter in 2021, Jimmy shared a bit more
about the freedom that he found on the ocean and what it means to him:

“I
grew up behind the Iron Curtain under a dictatorship in a communist
regime, my father died in prison as a political prisoner, when I was 19 I
tried to escape but I was shot. I couldn’t get out of the country.

“What
is liberty? What is freedom? We really only know what it is when we
lose it. Once you’ve tasted freedom – and I hadn’t tasted freedom when I
was young – but once I had, I realized that a career is not what
matters in life. In life what matters is to take advantage of that hard
won freedom. And it’s what I’ve done for the rest of my life.

“I’ve
given up things, but I don’t care because I always wanted to be free to
do whatever I wanted. I did not want to take freedom for granted.”

In 1975 Jimmy Cornell set out on a 6 year blue water adventure with his wife and two kids aboard their vessel SV ADVENTURA.
He was a reporter for the BBC World Service and shared his
observations with the world over the course of their adventures.

Jimmy Cornell and his son Ivan taking a noonsight (circa 1975?)

Jimmy Cornell's various global voyages

To
this day, Jimmy Cornell says the very best cruising was when his entire
family was aboard.  Together they could all be themselves.
When he and his family set sail in the 70’s there were far few
cruising yachts much less cruising families.  In his recently
published Cruising World article he compares the data from his recent
survey of cruising boats to previous surveys.  The amount of
cruising families is among the data points he looks at across his
surveys.

Cruising
has changed and is changing.  The same can be said about access to
information and the weather.  Jimmy is a data collector and
approaches the topic of 'change' with numbers and facts.

We
had an easy trip and good seas from Chiapas to El Salvador…and an
exciting but nice ride into the bay. While in Guatemala we met many Long
Line pangas…one came close to say hello and stayed by our side videoing
and taking pics. Then left and came back again for several more
minutes. We were traveling with Muirgen, Summer Breeze and Tidings of
Joy and we were so thankful for the caravan support. Nothing happened
but an exchange of smiles and photos, but was great to have boats on the
radio that were ready to come to our aid if needed! Thank you Panama
Posse team for making this lifestyle a lot more safe and comfortable.-

10) THE HARPY EAGLE:

THE NATIONAL BIRD OF PANAMA  🇵🇦

by Russell Descheemaeker, age 13

The
Harpy Eagle is a majestic and powerful bird.  Its legs are as big
as a human wrist.  The female is bigger than the male and its claws
are as big as a grizzly bear's claws.  A harpy eagle once knocked a
BBC cameraman unconscious.  It would have killed him if not for
the bulletproof vest he had on.

They
are very smart hunters.  For example, the harpy eagle will reveal
itself to monkeys to see how the monkeys responds.  If the monkey
is defending a pack, the monkeys will group up and taunt the harpy to
come closer so that they can rip the eagle apart together.   The
wiser Harpy eagle with fly away to find easier food.  If the
monkey runs in terror the eagle will pursue it's prey and attack.

The
harpy eagles' range is from Peru to Mexico.  However, due to
deforestation they are now only seen in South America and Panama.
They live near and around jungles and they make their nest in the
tallest tree in their area.  Their range from their nest is 10km.
They patrol this range mercilessly.  They mate fore life and
do not share their range with any other harpy eagles...if they can help
it.

11) GOOD NAUTICAL:

🇵🇦 URRACA ISLAND – MONKEY REFUGE – ECO RESORT – PANAMA 🇵🇦

GOOD NAUTICAL

Set
out at sea, Urraca is a mangrove island with no actual land, where
every structure has been built on stilts over the water.  The
island is located in the most pristine and secluded area of the Bocas
del Toro archipelago, on the northern Caribbean coast of Panama, and is
accessible via a 35 minute boat ride from Isla Colon.

Good Nautical MONKEY ISLAND

The
island is 100% powered by solar panels and solar lights. The eco-resort
collects their freshwater resources through a rain catchment system. To
avoid the use of plastic only stainless steel straws are available, and
we provide guests with unlimited drinking water in reusable glass
bottles. To conserve our resources bedding and towels are changed upon
request
.

Elevated walkways on the island

In
2013, Francine and Toutie moved to Urraca Private Island, where they
built a beautiful home among the mangroves.  They went on to build
Urraca Luxury Private Island with a love for nature. She wishes to share
her passion for the environment and the monkeys with those who come to
visit the island. She also wishes to give back to the land, and the
native Ngäbe by providing jobs for them and letting them be a part of
her dream.  Her dream is to live a simple life with nothing other
than her beloved monkeys, a plate of fresh lobster, and a cold glass of
rum.

Over
the years, Francine has adopted additional monkeys who were either
abandoned by their pet owners, or found orphaned due to habitat loss or
hunting in the wild. Now, all these monkeys belong to a troop where they
can socialize, groom, and play with other monkeys every day.

SV ZORBA 🧑🏼‍🤝‍🧑🏼 Limor & Tomer

We are Limor(48) & Tomer(51) from sailing yacht Zorba- Tayana 48DS 2007

We have  retired 7/2022(both pharmacists), and started cruising full time.

Limor
is what I call a reluctant sailor but loves this way of life....so we
keep on a ratio of 5% sailing time....the rest on anchor.

I am sailing for 30 years with plenty of pauses in between....

In my past I was a sailing instructor, a tugboat captain , a chase boat captain, a dredger cooperator and a delivery skipper.

Most of my experience is in the Mediterranean

Before
buying the Zorba (Tayana 48) we lived onboard an Oceanis 35 for 16
years...without sailing much, besides once in a while for a few
hours....

At
2015 we cruised 8 months on a gulfstar 50 from Key West up to the BVI's
(Bahamas, Puerto Rico, USVI, BVI) and back to Florida.

We
began at Alameda where we found the boat, and after cruising the Baja
& the Sea Of Cortez, we are now on our way South⛵️ the plan is a
long stay at Costa Rica

2025 we plan sailing south to Panama and probably cross East to the Caribbean side.

How to Harden Your Vessel's Access points

Stainless Steel Bars across over hatch entries

This
past week there have been alarming and heartbreaking incidents on both
ends of the Panama Posse route.  It is with deep sadness that we
learn of mariners being accosted and others disappearing for the moment
without resolution.

Both incidents and others in between are stark reminders that it is important to have an emergency plan and consider how to harden access points to you vessel.  There will be many different plans and that's fine...just having one is the most important part.

Below is a compilation of security systems that different mariners employ to keep their vessel and crew safe at anchor.

tied up in the harbour and walked to the C&I offices in 2 separate
locations.  Approximately a 20 min walk.  A fellow cruiser who
had cleared in at this location told me to bring $80 in cash because
extra fees would be charged. We started with customs who charged us a $40
processing fee to be paid in cash only.  See receipt.  The
receipt looks official and even states a VAT is charged. Then we went to
immigration who charged us a $40 fee as well.  The receipt
states it’s an overtime fee, however we clearly arrived on a weekday at
approx 2 pm in the afternoon.   We finished both procedures by 3 pm
and were out of pocket $80 USD. Unfortunately the names of the officers
are not displaced on the receipts.  However the customs agent was
male and the immigration agent female."

CORCOVADO NATIONAL PARK 🇨🇷  COSTA RICA –

OSA PENINSULA –

PANAMA POSSE CENTRAL AMERICAN ROUTE

Formation of the Peninsula

The
history of the Osa Peninsula is steeped in geological mystery.
The Osa Peninsula is part of the tectonic plates collision of the
land bridge between North and South America that rose above the surface
of the water. The land bridge between these continents is in large part
responsible for the incredibly high biodiversity found in this area. The
Corcovado National Park within the peninsula is 4,178 hectares (10,324
acres) and  park ranges in elevation from sea level to 745
meters

OSA

(0
– 2,444 feet). The Corcovado Park exemplifies the tropical rain forest,
with a abundance of species, spectacular buttresses, large woody vines
and abundant growth and trees and contains the complete tropical insect
ecosystem from Mexico to Panama. It has 23 miles of rugged beaches with
dense rain forest dropping into the Pacific Ocean.

OSA

Corcovado National Park is a land and sea Park

HUMANS ARRIVE

Native
tribes arrived on Osa Peninsula as far back as 6,000 BC, and various
indigenous groups such as the Chiriquí and Borucas hunted in the area.

The
nearby Isla del Caño  has a history of being struck by lightning
more than any other place in Central America. This is thought by locals
to be because Caño Island was a Pre-Columbian cemetery and the land is
believed to be sacred. Exceptional round Diquis stones have left behind
by a long lost civilization and several Panama Posse Boats have been on
the island to explore and dive via operators from Drake Bay.

EXPLORERS AND PIRATES ARRIVE

In
March 1579, during his circumnavigation of the globe in the Golden
Hind, Sir Francis Drake visited the shores of the Osa and eventually
based his entourage from his name sake bay Bahía Drake  a small bay
on the north side of the Osa Peninsula.  It was used by Drake
during his raids on the Spanish Main in the 16th century and the
location of one of the British pirate’s fabled hidden treasures.

The
Area is best approached via the Drake Bay Anchorage on the Panama Posse
route from the NW entrance to the park which provides a spectacular
anchorage and a coastal hiking trail towards the park. In addition
several tour operators which are also based in Drake Bay for exceptional
exploring.  Access to the Park can also be made from Gulfo Dulce
to the south.

This
national park provides the exclusive habitat for Costa Rica’s shyest
and most endangered inhabitants. Baird’s Tapirs, Jaguars, Scarlet
Macaws, Harpy Eagles, Red-backed squirrel monkeys and White-lipped
Peccaries. It is wet, remote and rugged, but the trails are decent and
features several camping areas near ranger stations. It is a tropical
rain forest in the purest sense with waterfalls and pools.

2) REPORT ON OCEAN POSSE EVENT IN

SHELTER BAY MARINA  🇵🇦

A GREAT SUCCESS

The
annual Shelter Bay event was a huge success.  There were
informative seminars and trade show displays.  There were
attendants from all three posses,  guests contemplating joining,
and mariners passing through.  Many guests were there with their
boats and several arrived by car from the Pacific side. The seminars
were followed by an open Flor de Caña rum bar, a Panamanian traditional
dance performance, a feast, great music and a next day Mexican train
competition.

A highlight of the event was the young traditional Panamanian dance performance.

6) 2 SEPARATE GROUPS OF POSSE BOATS

SHARE WEATHER WINDOW & CELEBRATE LANDFALL IN

BAHIA SANTA ELENA, COSTA RICA

🇲🇽 🇨🇷 🇳🇮 🇸🇻

PANAMA POSSE AMAZON SIDETRIP

Nothing like sundowners with friends after crossing the Pacific Nicaraguan Coast

A group of boats left Bahia Del Sol, El Salvador and made their way to
Bahia Santa Elena, Costa Rica.  This micro Posse consisted of SY
Fickle, SY Crackerjack, SY Serenity.  Meanwhile, another group of
boats, having seen the same window left Chiapas days earlier bound for
the same Bay in northern Costa Rica.  This micro posse consisted of
MV Serenity, MV Next Chapter, SV Courage, SV Boundless.

SY FICKLE reports:

We all took the same weather window when we saw a long awaited lull in the Papagayo winds. We on SY Fickle
wanted a “boring” passage after seeing another boat arrive to Bahia Del
Sol with ripped sails from their sail north through the Papagayos.
Knowing that we, SV Serenity, and MV Crackerjack were all taking the
same weather window going to the same place, I quickly started a
WhatsApp group thread. It was so much fun texting each other nonstop for
the entire 2ish days. We joked the entire way. It was refreshing to
know that we weren’t out there alone in the big blue ocean. To our
delight, 4 other Posse boats arrived from Chiapas within hours of our
arrival into Santa Elena. I think it’s safe to say that we were all very
happy to arrive amongst each other onboard SV Serenity, the always
gracious hosts, after enduring rough seas in the beginning that
eventually ended in flat seas.

Strong words of caution : Santa Elena bay has crocodiles and the hiking trails
are infested with ticks. Most that went to visit the tiny 4 foot tall
waterfall brought home ticks.

Otherwise, Santa Elena is a beautiful, calm, and serene pit stop that is bursting
with nature. I’m so glad that we decided to stop!

DOWN WIND MARINE AND THE PANAMA POSSE

Ticks in the toes.

Editors note:  Last May our vessel, SY WHIRLWIND,
anchored in the same beautiful bay and did the same hike.  We saw
no crocodiles and zero ticks.  Interesting to note the different
observations at different times of year.  Nonetheless, it is good
to know what to look out for.  Bahia Santa Elena is located in the
heart of the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica which is their 'dry forest'
region.  Hence the ticks.

10) CULTURE: THE FEAST OF SANTA MARIA CANDELARIA

CELEBRATED IN TUXTLA CHICA, CHIAPAS 🇲🇽

Marina Chiapas is a sponsor of the Panama Posse and a fabulous host to all
vessels in the southernmost port of Mexico.  Visiting vessels have
the opportunity to meet local guides Tony and Miguel to learn about the
history and culture of the region.  Last week, the crews of MV SUMMERBREEZE, MY SPLINTER, & SY EVER AFTER,
took the opportunity to join Tony and Miguel on a short trip to the
nearby town of Tuxtla Chico to experience the Feast of Santa Maria
Candaleria.  This catholic celebration that happens once a year.
Celebrations include music, dancing, fireworks, and artistry.

MV SUMMERBREEZE Trip Report:

On February 2nd of every year  the Feast of Santa Maria Candelaria
(is celebrated) in the town of Tuxtla Chico. During the festivities of
this traditional fair entire families of many generations congregate in
the streets of the city to make artistic 'carpets' made out of sawdust
of different colors.  (Designs include) flowers, corozo, and
cascabillo and other natural elements that are combined on the streets
of this town to make miles long carpets for a procession to go down.

At about 8 o’clock they come out of the chapel and carry the Virgin Maria
statue through the streets, with an elaborate procession behind them.
Each intersection they come to they shoot off fireworks to let you know
where the Virgin Maria is. It’s quite elaborate. I would say that there
had to be at least 100,000 to 200,000 people in this little town during
this event. I’ve never seen anything like it ever before. Anywhere. A
whole video could be made of this event. Unfortunately, it rained for
about 20 minutes rather hard and washed away a lot of the hard work that
people had done. But not much. Because, like I said, there were miles
of the streets covered with this sawdust carpet.

It was incredible.

image

The 'carpets' are made of sawdust.

Each 'carpet' is a work of art carefully executed.

The celebration is so colorful

Upon completion the streets are 'carpeted' with unique and beautiful art

Uninvited visitors - swimming pigs in the Bahamas

SY FREEDOM says:
The pigs are much bigger than expected. Definitely a tourist spot!
Found a couple amazing anchorages while exploring on the dinghy.

https://goodnautical.com/bahamas/anchorage/staniel-cay-nw-coast

More about this area from SY FREEDOM:

We
are not full time cruisers, but take advantage of time when we find it.
We spent 10 days in Abaco's, mostly Hopetown in early December. The
Combustion Music Festival with singer songwriters, mostly from
Nashville, were amazing. Late January we headed out again. A couple days
in Chub Cay...which is a beautiful resort and marina. Easy check in at
the airport. You can also anchor out front. From there we headed to the
Exumas. A few nights in Highbourne Cay on anchor and beach time at the
resort. Staniel Cay, known for the swimming pigs, was a beautiful
anchorage and easy access to the Staniel Cay Yacht Club for fun with
fellow boaters. We met some great new friends and took the dingy to
several other neighboring Cays. Amazing sandbars and additional
anchorages we will be back too. One in particular of Sampson's Cay (a
private island) was serene and quiet with access to great beaches and
sandbars by dinghy. We had agreed to meet our Florida neighbors in
Dunmore Town Eleuthera, so we had to shorten our stay and head back
north. Spanish Wells stop over was a favorite on the trip. Beautiful
water, friendly people and great food at Wreckers, the marina bar. The
water is as clear as drinking water everywhere. We arrived in the
Valentine's Marina a day ahead of schedule, due to forecasted heavy
winds. A very expensive marina, but considering the weather we had this
week, we were very happy to be tied to a dock! Registered over 41 knots
between 1-2am. Not much sleep that night. To get to Dunmore Town, you
need to cross the Devil's Backbone from Spanish Wells. It was highly
recommended we hire a pilot to drive us through the very shallow, coral
laden area, very close to shore. The current Navionics charts were quite
accurate, but we did hire a captain to get us through the first time.
With the winds this week coming from the north, the Devil's Backbone is
not passable. We will be here a few extra days waiting for the wind to
shift and swells to calm down. Heading back to the Berry Islands for a
few days on our way back to Florida next week. Takeaways from this
trip...we will pick one area to explore for a 3-4 week period, not try
to cover 3, since we are not full time cruisers, I would like to come
back when the weather and water temps are warmer. I envy those who can
spend years exploring all these beautiful islands. We will be exploring
much more in the future, in 3-4 week increments.

15) MEET THE FLEET

SV CIRCUITOUS

Jess and Matt

Ahoy, Adventurers! We are SY CIRCUITOUS, Matt and Jess.  Accompanied by our furry companions, we set sail with the ambitious goal of circumnavigating the globe.

Our
story began over a decade ago in a small town in North Eastern
Pennsylvania, where we first crossed paths. Fueled by a shared desire to
break free from the constraints of small town living, we envisioned a
life of extensive travel. Dissatisfied with the conventional, one or
two-week vacation model, we yearned for something more exhilarating – a
life untethered by the mundane.

Initially captivated by the idea of RVing, the turning point came when
Matt stumbled upon the inspiring tale of Tania Aebi in the book "Maiden
Voyage." The seed of a grander adventure was planted – why limit
ourselves to land when we could embrace the vastness of the seas,
sailing across oceans and exploring numerous countries?

Despite initial reservations from Jess about floating on the open
ocean, the fire in Matt's eyes ignited a passion for sailing. Over Ten
years of dedication and perseverance, we secured the boat that felt like
home. With vows exchanged, we embarked on an extended honeymoon, and we
are now three years deep into our maritime odyssey.

This
life on the waves has proven to be nothing short of extraordinary.
Meeting diverse and fascinating people, forging lasting friendships, and
accumulating a treasure trove of experiences. Matt and Jess find each
moment at sea worth the adventure. Living our dream, we wouldn't trade
this exhilarating life for anything else!

pests know no borders, but every country does.  In fact, every
country the world over has unique and explicit guidelines regarding what
can and cannot come into their country.  Recently vessels entering
Mexico from the south have met strict produce enforcement because of
produce pests that the Mexican Government do not want hitchhiking into
their country.  Please see the link below for complete list of
restrictions.  Be aware that anything brought into Mexico that is
restricted can be taken from your vessel upon entrance.

18)  MUST SEE:

CASTLE OF SAN LORENZO

 AT PORT CHAGRES 🇵🇦 PANAMA

Shelter
Bay Marina is a great location for exploring the mouth of the Rio
Chagres and tapping into the long standing history of trade moving
through the region from the Atlantic to the Pacific.  El Castillo
de San Lorenzo is a UNESCO World Heritage site.  This
historic Spanish Fort is a short 10 minute drive from the marina.
The Castle was built as a fort by the Spanish and ransacked by
pirates several times over many many years in an effort to control the
access to and the movement of goods (treasures and gold).  We,
aboard SV WHIRLWIND had a fascinating trip into the site after the Ocean Posse Party.

revillafifedos

Mike and Maurisa with the Spanish fort in the background

The
Castillo de San Lorenzo overlooks a bay leading into the river Chagres
some 100 feet down a cliff. The river leads inland about 2/3 of the way
across Panama to Panama City. A dam was built as part of the canal
construction around 100 years ago. This created a big inland lake (Lake
Gatun). The Panama Canal locks are used to lift boats up into this lake,
sail across to the other side and then through a 7 mile long trench in
the rock to the locks on the Pacific side where the boats go back down.

ancient volcano

The Fort is on a cliff overlooking the mouth of the Rio Chagres.

By
1534, the Monarchy of Spain had, following its conquest of Peru,
established a rainy-season gold route over the isthmus of Panama —Camino
Real de Cruces— using mule trains and the Chagres River.

The
trail connected the Pacific port of Panama City to the mouth of the
Chagres, from whence Peru’s plunder would sail to Spain’s storehouses in
the leading Atlantic ports of the isthmus: Nombre de Dios, at first;
and, later, Portobelo. The dry-season, overland route—the Camino
Real—connected Panama City with those ports directly. Attracted to the
treasure, pirates began attacking Panama’s coast around 1560.

The site is a UNESCO heritage site and well signed to learn about the history in both Spanish and English.

hammerheads

The fort was well protected...and yet the pirates ransacked it a number of times.

Captain
Morgan the pirate came along about 300 years ago and captured the fort
from the Spanish. He then took his boats and men inland as far as he
could. He then found 500 mules and transported guns and canons and
supplies another 7 miles to Panama City where he plundered all the gold
for himself and men that the Spanish had plundered from local Indians.
It is hard to tell who was the bad guy here.

10) FORT GEORGE CAY 🇹🇨 TURKS AND CAICOS

21° 53.3083' N  072° 05.7233' W

Cannons 💣 in the water mark the site where Fort Saint George once stood.

Fort
George Cay (originally known as Fort St. George Cay) is a tiny scenic
island found between Parrot Cay and Dellis Cay. The island is
uninhabited and is popular with locals and visitors alike as a boat
cruise destination from Providenciales.

Fort
St. George Cay, located in the Turks and Caicos Islands, holds
significant appeal. This historical site served as a strategic outpost
during the 18th century, safeguarding maritime trade routes for the
British Empire. Today, it continues to attract sailors and adventure
seekers for several reasons:

The
well-preserved ruins of Fort St. George offer a glimpse into the
island's rich maritime history, making it a captivating destination for
history enthusiasts.

The
cay boasts stunning coastal views and pristine beaches, making it an
ideal stopover for sailors  in a serene environment.

The former site of Fort Saint George.

Spectacular
beaches are found on both sides of the island. On the western coast
near Pine Cay, a sand spit and sandbars have accreted, creating an
incredibly beautiful setting. On the eastern side and adjacent to Dellis
Cay, a less extensive yet equally beautiful beach can be found,
complete with casuarina trees for shade.

Fort George Cay is a protected historical site and a national park and it is illegal to take or damage any artifacts.

In
1795, a gun battery was constructed on the north end of the island by
Loyalist planters to defend against pirates, privateers, the French, and
Haitian revolutionaries. After a few years, the British took over the
fort. Today canons from these defenses could be seen in the shallow
water right off the beach. Archeological digs and studies that have
taken place on Fort George Cay have revealed some fascinating facts
about the fort and the cay. It appears that the island has suffered from
serious erosion, losing an estimated 150 feet (46 m) over the last two
hundred years, and that fortifications actually used to stand where the
canons are found today in the ocean.

During
the American Revolutionary War, not all of the colonists fought against
Britain, and those who supported the King were called Loyalists, or
Tories. After the war and their expulsion from the United States, some
Loyalists were granted land in other British territories and colonies as
compensation for their losses in the Thirteen Colonies. Wade Stubbs, a
landowner in America, was one of them.

The Story of Wade Stubbs

Originally
from Cheshire County in England, Wade Stubbs emigrated to Florida, near
St. Augustine. After the conclusion of the war and after the 1783
Treaty of Versailles was ratified, he and about 70 other loyalists were
granted tracts of land in the Turks and Caicos Islands by the
then-reigning monarch of Britain, King George III. Nearly all of these
grants were on the two largest islands in the archipelago, the centrally
located North Caicos and Middle Caicos.

In
the early 1800s, the cotton industry in the Turks and Caicos, which
once held so much financial promise, saw a rapid decline. This was due
to an overwhelming combination of pests and diseases (including the boll
weevil), soil erosion, and hurricane damage. The great houses,
infrastructure, and extensive fields, once symbols of relative success,
fell into disrepair and abandonment.

During
the 1800s era, the Turks and Caicos remained a British territory, yet
the islands were administrated through the Bahamas from 1799. In 1874,
due to the failure of the local Presidency, the Turks and Caicos was
annexed to Jamaica. In 1962, Jamaica went independent, and the Turks and
Caicos became its own Crown Colony, and local elections were held.

The
history of the Turks and Caicos is closely tied to African slaves, and
the majority of the current population can trace ancestry to either
slaves brought to the islands for the salt and cotton industries, or
those freed by the British from slave ships.

In
the early 1800s, Britain began to put a stop to slavery. It was a long,
drawn-out process that started in the late 1700s, yet the first
official act was the abolition of slavery in Britain in 1807, which did
not unfortunately apply to the British territories overseas and in the
Caribbean. The 1833 Slavery Abolition Act emancipated slaves in most
territories other than regions controlled by the East India Company, and
Ceylon and Saint Helena.

A
very simplified view of the origins and movements of the African
peoples in the Turks and Caicos is that core groups of African slaves
initially moved to the islands as with the Bermudians to Salt Cay and
Grand Turk for the salt industry starting sometime in the mid to later
1600s, and with the Loyalist Americans to the Caicos Islands starting in
the later 1700s. Due to the collapse of the cotton plantations in the
early to mid-1800s, the majority of the slaves in the Caicos Islands
migrated to the salt-producing islands or abroad to the Bahamas. A heavy
influence on the African populations of the Caicos Islands was slaves
freed by the British from Spanish and Portuguese slave ships that were
either captured or wrecked in the islands. The best-known wrecks were
the Trouvadore, the Esperanza, and perhaps a vessel referenced as the
Gambia.

GOOD NAUTICAL

Panama
offers incredible cruising on both sides of the canal.  North east
of the canal entrance are the San Blas Islands. There are over 350
islands and cays 49 of which are inhabited.  Currently there is a

out there.

SOOO MUCH TO DO...

1) ANCHOR:

This
is by far one of our favorite anchorages since we left San Francisco
four months ago!  There is so much to love here: Paraiso just
north, and Barra de Navidad just south of here; this is an amazing area!
We have met three sailing couples that bought a home and never
left.

2) EAT WITH YOUR FEET IN THE SAND:

This is Onno from Lost Pearl, Eric and Anna from Dances With Winds (Barra residents enjoying Christmas at Tenacatita), and John & Kristine from Courage all

in bacon covered with almond cream sauce. Yum!

hotel.

Vessels
using the French Harbor anchorage (but not our dock) are welcome to use

15) MEET THE FLEET

SY TIAMAT

Owen, Archer, Olivia and Stephanie on SV Tiamat

We’re
the Anderson family sailing on Tiamat, a Fountaine Pajot Orana 44.
Almost ten years ago we decided we wanted our kids experience some kind
of grand adventure growing up, and somehow hit on the idea of sailing.
After taking some lessons and giving it a go, we found we liked it, and
soon enough were buying our very own Tiamat in San Diego in 2018. After
sailing her around San Francisco Bay for several years and refitting her
extensively, we sailed under the Golden Gate in August 2022, coming
down to Mexico with the 2022 Baja HaHa.

Since
that time we’ve done a pretty thorough circuit of Pacific Mexico, both
the Sea of Cortez and the mainland coast, and are now turning our sights
towards a Pacific crossing in Spring 2024. But since we were pretty
tired of hanging around Banderas Bay after passing hurricane season
there, we’ve made the uncommon decision to spend the intervening months
sailing down to Panama, and then making the crossing from there. We’ll
see what happens after that!"

17)  SAFETY ALERT: FIRE SAFETY AND STORAGE OF

SMALL ELECTRIC POWERED CRAFT AND DEVICES ON YACHTS

Small Lithium batteries swollen

The
Government of the UK earlier this year issued a guidance to all yachts
about the increased presence of Lithium battery powered watercraft and
tenders on yachts.

“There
has been an increase in the use of small electrically powered craft and
other vehicles such as electric tenders, electric jet skis, electric
foils (e-foils) and other personal watercraft powered by Li-ion
batteries. However, there has not been a thorough consideration of
whether the fire prevention, detection and suppression measures
previously in-place on large yachts for previous generation
petrol-fuelled craft, are appropriate for the newer-battery powered
craft.”

This
warning comes in response to a rise in Yacht fires.  Not all fires
have been from lithium battery sources however they are on the rise and
becoming more and more commonplace on yachts without a ton of
preliminary research on their suitability in a marine environment.
For example, we have USB charging fans that we charge and move air
with constantly.  We have different brands.  Some brands we
have found that the battery pack can begin to work inconsistently and/or
bulge.  The bulging was alarming and called for immediate exile off the boat.

Take
this guidance as an opportunity to inspect your lithium battery powered
items onboard to ascertain that they are or are not in good working
order.

Viceroy
Sebastián de Eslava ordered the construction of this Fuerte de San
Sebastián del Pastelillo. Construction began in 1741 and was completed
in 1744 under the leadership of the military engineer Juan Bautista
Mac-Evan. The fort is nick-named "Pastelillo" because the structure
resembles a cake.  The fort was designed to protect the city
from attacks by pirate ships as well as to prevent smuggling of goods.

CAPTAIN RON AWARD

I
would like to nominate myself, Walt Childson of SV Knot Right, for the
Captain Ron award. In preparation to transit the canal, we headed into
La Playita Marina Panama  to put our boat’s stern into a downwind
slip. The wind was very strong blowing the boat on our beam into the
dock while traveling down the fairway. The view on my stern was
obstructed because of my dingy. The view forward was obstructed because
the 25 knot wind during the day ripped the stitching from my bimini and
it was hanging down in our faces. So the main helm was blind. But that
is where my bow thruster controls are located. For some reason, my very
powerful bow thrusters were only one fifth of their normal output. Hence
I lost complete control of the boat and rammed (and I do mean rammed)
into the corner of another slip on the dock. I hope you read this note
before you looked at the picture, as it is very demeaning and
embarrassing. No other boats were subject to my stupidity.

5) SEASON 7 PANAMA POSSE EVENTS

events

The Bay of Cartagena, located on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, is renowned among sailors for several key reasons

Historical Significance Cartagena's
history is deeply interwoven with its maritime legacy. It was a major
port during the Spanish colonial era, and its well-preserved
architecture and fortifications, such as the iconic Castillo de San
Felipe de Barajas, offer a glimpse into the past.

Beauty and Scenery
The bay is surrounded by stunning landscapes, including beaches,
tropical islands, and clear blue waters. This scenic beauty is a visual
feast for sailors who often seek out destinations that offer natural
allure.

Protected Waters
The bay's natural geography provides a sheltered harbor, making it an
city anchorage for yachts and boats. This protection from the open sea
is crucial for safety and comfort, especially for those on long voyages
seeking a tranquil haven.

Cultural Vibrancy  Cartagena
is known for its vibrant culture, including music, dance, and cuisine.
The blend of African, Spanish, and Indigenous influences creates a
lively atmosphere that sailors can immerse themselves in once they step
off their vessels.

Strategic Location
Its location makes it a popular stop for sailors navigating the
Caribbean or undertaking longer transatlantic journeys. The bay serves
as a crucial resting and resupply point.

Local Maritime Community The
presence of a robust local maritime community, including experienced
sailors, guides, and marine services, provides a sense of camaraderie
and support that is highly valued in the sailing world.

A TREASURE MAP FOR

GOLFITO CHECKIN AND CHECKOUT

On this Treasure Map three stars mark the SPOTS

Golfito,
Costa Rica is the southernmost port of entry and exit for the country.
As such, vessels in transit will want to know where three very
important buildings are:

  1. IMMIGRATION
  2. CUSTOMS
  3. PORT CAPTAIN

Visited in the order above, a vessel's captain can easily navigate the Check in and Check out procedure on their own.

In Golfito (and all ports of entry and exit) make sure to have 3 copies of each:

  • zarpe from the last port
  • passport/s
  • crew list signed by the captain
  • TIP (temporary import permit)
  • boat documentation

Both Marinas in town also offer the service of processing Boat and Crew paperwork for vessels in transit.

SY BOUNDLESS 🇺🇸 Daniel & Naiby - Shannon 43'

In
the southeastern part of Bahia Tenacatita there is the community of
Manzanilla.  Manzanilla is a lovely town to visit.  There is a
vibrant Friday market, plenty of tiendas to provision ones boat, a
lovely book store, cute coffee shops, palapas on the beach...AND...a
crocodile reserve.

SY BOUNDLESS recently visited the crocodile reserve:

We
found the croc reserve in Manzanilla an interesting excursion.
400 or so that are free to head to the beach to feed in the
mornings and evenings!

A little further south along the coast of Mexico SY VOYAGER captured this image:

Croc
freaked us out as we have been swimming here the last week 😵‍💫
Was leaving the bay to pump out holding tanks and thought we saw a
log. The crocodile was at least 10' long.

13) MAYA TRAIN

The rails run through virgen forest.

Current
Mexican President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, often called AMLO, has
undertaken many impactful projects in his presidency.  The Maya
Train Project is among his flagship projects that he is aiming to
complete before the end of his term in September 2024.  The Maya
Train is to be a new rail 950mile line that is supposed to “revitalize”
the Yucatan Peninsula in the south-east of Mexico by circulating tourism
and commerce into and around the region, creating hundreds of thousands
of jobs, raising property values, and moving cargo to compete with the
Panama Canal.

Tren Maya

The route of the Maya Train

In
spite of all the possible social and economic benefits many concerns
persist over the project due to the lack of environmental review or
planning, the social and environmental impact of the train in regions
sensitive to such invasive ‘progress’, and the militarization by which
the project has bulldozed forward.  Much of the rail lines are
running over fragile ground that geologists describe as ‘swiss cheese’.
The ground is full of holes, caverns, and underground caves
systems that ground water moves through.  These unground corridors
not only move fresh water throughout the region, many also hold
artifacts from some of the oldest inhabitants in the region: the Mayan
and the Olmec.

President AMLO with regional representatives in front of earth movers required to make way for the tracks

President AMLO with regional representatives in front of earth movers required to make way for the tracks.

There
is controversy over the train and yet, the project barrels onward.
Originally, the project was budgeted at $8 billion, three years in
and the project is now looking like it will cost closer to $29 billion
dollars.  This is an impressive investment into the region which
international investors see as a good thing.  Last Friday the first
295  mile stretch of the rail line opened with one track and some
delay.  Nonetheless, the train is fast tracking ahead of
schedule.

16)  SAFETY ALERT:

MARINE ANIMAL ATTACKS

December
has seen two alarming marine animal attacks within 500nm of one another
on the Pacific coast of mainland Mexico.  Early in December a 26
year old Mexican national was died in Melaque, Mexico, and last week a
Belgiun tourist died in Zihuatenejo Bay.  Both incidents involved
swimmers getting bitten and bleeding to death before life saving
measures could be attempted.  Immediately the marine animal
involved was determined to be one of two top tier predators in the areas
capable of such killings: Crocodile and Shark.

Since
the incident in Melaque, marine biologists have determined that this
was a shark attack.  The incident in Zihuatenejo is thought to be a
crocodile, but the verdict is not totally decided.

Obviously,
both animals live in the waters where many people swim and recreate.
Furthermore, whichever animal was involved, the reality
strikes us to provide further information on being safe and aware in the
water.

According
to an American Lifeguard Association expert and marine biologists,
neither sharks nor crocodiles are targeting humans.  Having said
that they are not necessarily fluke accidents either.  In fact
there are some things that people can do to be more safe in their salty
territory.

Taylor
Cunningham, a marine biologist and shark conservationist says, "People
need to understand that the ocean is home to an abundance of wildlife,
not just sharks. By entering the ocean, we are taking on the
responsibility of entering their home. So, it is also our responsibility
to be aware of our effects on the ocean and how that wildlife or
conditions can affect us."

In this article: https://www.travelandleisure.com/travel-tips/how-to-stay-safe-from-sharks-while-swimming there are may good recommendations for staying safe in the water.  Headlines include:

  • Research local shark and crocodile patterns.
Certain species will feed in particular areas, during particular
times of day, or they may breed during certain times of year in a
specific location.  It is always good to get to know an area from
    locals.
  • The more clear the water, the better for seeing the animals you are swimming with.  Locals
up and down the pacific coast from Mexico to Panama have always
cautioned us from swimming in murky waters near the mouth of estuaries.
  • Bring a mask and fins on long swims.  These tools allow humans to be stronger underwater than without them.
  • Leave the white bikini at home.
Sharks have monochromatic vision and some experts advise that
bright colors that stand out from the ocean blues attract attention like
    fish on a reef.
  • Don't
worry if you have a cut — sharks don't react to human blood.
However, sharks are said to have very sensitive nerves throughout
their heads and can sense fear...so it is important to stay cool
    underwater.

  • Act like a predator by constantly checking your surroundings.
Sharks are known to attack their prey from the blind spot of the
prey.  Continually checking your surroundings underwater eliminates
your blindspot.  When swimming in pairs, watching one another and
your surroundings together can eliminate blind spots as well.
  • Make eye contact if you see a shark.
Show the shark that you are aware of them by making eye contact.
Continue to look around.  Stay calm and back away.  Do
not turn your back on a shark.
  • Create space between you and the shark.
  • Slowly back away after you've made eye contact, but avoid splashing and making noise.  Both sharks and crocodiles are attracted
  • Note the shark's body language.
  • Remember that sharks swim by and ignore people all the time.
  • Above all, don't panic.

17)  MUST SEE:
TULUM 🇲🇽 MEXICO

Museo Nacional de Antropología Mexico City

Tulum
is the site of a Mayan walled city which served as a major port for
Coba, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. These magificent ruins are
situated on 40 foot tall cliffs along the east coast of the Yucatán
Peninsula. The site might have been called Zama, meaning City of Dawn,
because it faces the sunrise.

Tulum
was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya at its
height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about
70 years after the Spanish began occupying what is now Mexico .

 Correlation with Panama Posse Route

It
is one of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites, Tulum and you can see
it from your own vessel and anchor just south or to the north of it if
you are brave enough to enter the path though the reef with good light (
noon non cloudy not too windy )

and
draw less than 6 foot on a calm day – give yourself the flexibility to
visit during the off-peak hours of the early morning or late afternoon
and save your track. The Sand is compacted so only recommended as a day
anchorage.

The calendar

Tulum’s
massive wall was thick and 1,300 ft long parallel to the sea and would
have taken an enormous amount of energy and time, which shows how
important defense was. On the southwest and northwest corners there are
watch towers demonstrating a well defended city.

Tulum is considered by archeological experts one of the most well-known fortified sites of the Mayan Civilization.

There are three major structures of interest

  • El Castillo
  • Temple of the Frescoes
  • Temple of the Descending God

https://panamaposse.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/DSC_6231.jpg

In
2020, an underwater archaeological expedition led by Jerónimo Avilés
again excavated the cave and revealed the skeleton of a female about 30
years of age that lived at least 9,900 years ago.

18)  CELEBRATING THE NEW YEAR IN PANAMA  🇵🇦

THE TRADITION OF BURNING OF MUÑECOS

Many Panamanians are superstitious and have certain rituals they believe

must be done as we cross from one year to the next.  Panamanians

traditionally spend New Years eve with friends and family.

MUÑECOS AS EFFIGY:

Throughout
Panama at this time of year, you’ll see effigies, or life-sized dolls.
The effigy, also called a Judas doll,  represents someone or
something they dislike. These large replicas have various names,
including muñecos de año viejo (old

year dolls), muñecos judas (judas dolls), or simply muñecos (dolls). The

dolls are a  way to ring in the new year in the area. Muñecos are

typically made with a wood or metal frame, old clothes, and stuffed with

leaves and firecrackers. They are then thrown into a bonfire on the

strike of midnight on New Years’.

BURN BABY BURN

Some of the dolls are stuffed with firecrackers. At the stroke of midnight,

they are lit on fire and beaten. According to folklore, by beating and

setting the effigies on fire, the sins and evil spirits of the old year

are destroyed. Making way for good fortune in the new year. The fire

crackers are said to help drive the evil spirits away.

6) HO'OKIPA PUTTING MILES UNDER THEIR KEEL AGAIN

PANAMA POSSE AMAZON SIDETRIP

MV HO'OKIPA goes from Isla San Andres to Roatan a 62 hour push.

Hokipa's Track

This is a milestone for MV HO'OKIPA as they have been in Bocas for a few seasons now and are underway once again.

It
was a tough passage to San Andres from Bocas Del Toro with average 7
foot swells and confused seas but Ho’okipa (and her stabilizers!!! Thank
you) performed beautifully! Tiny bit better to the turn west then
smooth sailing with wind swell behind us.  We cut the corner into
pirate area figuring in these conditions if you want us come get us.
Saw 4 fishing trawlers there but they were just minding their own
business.

10) IT IS SCARLETT MACAW SEASON

IN BELIZE  🇧🇿

December
is a special time of year the world over.  For the Scarlett Macaws
of Belize it is a time of migration from their breeding grounds to
their feeding grounds.  Macaw begin gathering at their feeding
grounds in the Red Bank Village in December and Peak in February and
March

About the Scarlet Macaw.

Of the estimated total population of less than 5,000, less than 250 scarlet macaws, specifically the subspecies Ara macao cyanoptera
still exist within the country. Red Bank seems to be the most popular
location for Belize’s scarlet macaws, as most of them frequent the
jungles surrounding the village.

Scarlet
macaws can fly as swiftly as 35 miles per hours, usually in pairs or
small groups. When winter draws near, the macaws fly away from their
homes along the Maya Mountains in order to find food throughout Red Bank
and the rest of southern Belize. Common foodstuffs of the scarlet macaw
include portions of the Prickly Yellow and Wild Annato (whose waxy seed
covers have been converted into the condiment known as “achiote” or
“bijol”), as well as the fruit of the flowering Xylopia frutescens.

Factors
contributing toward the scarlet macaw’s endangered status would be the
efforts of poachers looking to capture them as pets, the destruction of
their habitat and low birth rates.  As their species numbers are
currently low, seeing them in mass in Belize is that much more
impressive.

Almonds are a favored food for the Scarlett Macaw in Red Bank Village, Belize

13) SHAFT SHARK

SPONSORS THE PANAMA POSSE

Ahoy Panama Posse

Propeller Line Cutter

Protect your drive train and propeller with the best rope, line and debris cutter there is. Available for both power and sail.

The
SHAFT SHARK line cutter is a serrated edge circular blade machined from
high quality (316L) type stainless steel. It is easy to install; no
drilling, tapping or dismantling. It is a split 2x piece unit for quick
and simple installation, no need to remove propeller.

Zero
maintenance since there are no moving parts
(cutters/bearings/zincs/stops) to maintain or replace annually. Easily
re-sharpened if necessary.

What does it do?

Attached
to your shaft just forward of your propeller, it rotates with the
shaft, cutting away any rope, weed or debris that might try to entangle
your shaft and propeller while you are underway.

Why do I need one?

To keep your propeller free from rope, weeds and underwater debris.

Eliminate the possibility of damage to your shaft, propeller and strut.

Eliminate the need for being towed due to fouled stern gear or propeller.

Drag and Efficiency

The
SHAFT SHARK is sized to both the shaft diameter and the propeller hub
diameter to ensure the lowest drag and minimal waterflow factors for the
boat and propeller efficiency. Overall these two factors will vary
depending upon the speed of the boat. This is why there are different
model units to suit all shaft and hub combinations.

14) MEET THE FLEET

GRETCHEN AND TIM ON

SY FELICITÀ

We’re
Gretchen and Tim sailing aboard Felicità, our Catalina 42. We met
racing Rhodes 19s in Chicago in 2014 and set off on this blue water
dream when we bought the boat in 2018. We refit the boat in San Diego
and left for Mexico in October 2022. We spent last season finding our
cruising legs and have opted to stay in Mexico for another season
because there are parts of the Sea of Cortez we haven’t yet explored.
Our plan is to make it to Zihuatanejo for Guitar Fest and then we’ll
return to the Sea through early summer 2024. Then next year, we’ll
boogie down through the Canal and who knows from there! When we’re not
on the boat, we’re at our land base in the Northwoods of Wisconsin.

You
can follow our antics and adventures on YouTube at GnT Sailing. We look
forward to crossing wakes with all our fellow Posse members. And if
we’re lucky enough to share an anchorage, break bread and share a laugh!

Broad horizons & unique experiences

Ancient Civilizations: Visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the ancient cultures they will encounter or learn about during their journey.

    Artifacts and Exhibits: The
museum is home to some of the most significant archaeological and
anthropological artifacts from Mexico’s pre-Columbian heritage,
including the Stone of the Sun (often referred to as the Aztec calendar
stone) and the Aztec Xochipilli statue.

The calendar

Piedra del Sol

Let’s
get the most obvious one out of the way first; the infamous Aztec
sunstone (sometimes wrongly referred to as the calendar stone) that was
unearthed during the building of the Metropolitan Cathedral in 1790. Weighing in at 24 tonnes,
this is a truly magnificent archaeological masterpiece that may well
seem strangely familiar, probably because it features on the back of the
ten-peso coin. While many theories have been proposed about the meaning
of the sun stone, no common conclusion has been reached. Nevertheless,
it’s easily the most emblematic exhibit of the Anthropology Museum

Statue of Xochipilli

This
16th-century Aztec statue was discovered at the base of Mexico’s second
tallest mountain Popocatépetl in the 19th century. Depicting the figure
of Xochipilli, the Aztec god of art, games and dance, it appears to
show him in the midst of an ecstatic, drug-induced state. This
interpretation is reinforced by the seemingly hallucinogenic plants
which are carved all over it, and his body language, and positioning. A
fascinating example of Mesoamerican sculpture, detailing cultural
experiences that many agree have never been depicted in European art,
it’s certainly a must-see.

A letter from Vicente:

To whom it may concern: Present.

Through this channel I report the events that occurred on October 24 of this year with the ship Rosemary Cristine, which sank on the day of the arrival of Hurricane Otis in the port of Acapulco. At approximately 11:00 p.m., Hurricane Otis began to blow strong winds and waves that caused the boat to lose stability and break loose from where it was anchored. The engines also did not respond to me and each time the waves increased in size. To such an extent that only the boat withstood three large waves of six meters causing it to sink, that night I was accompanied by my family who was always with me, my wife Maria Hilaria Delgado Valdovinos, my son Luis Sebastian Herrera Delgado and my grandson Luis Alberto Lopez Sarabia. That day only I survived, I was shipwrecked all night and was rescued by the Navy but my family was lost at sea. Today I ask for help to recover the remains of my family since I have a feeling that they were trapped in the aforementioned boat. I remain at your service. and hoping to be favored with your support to search for my family missing at sea.

Sincerely, Acapulco Guerrero, November 24, 2023

vicente report december 3

PANAMA POSSE Captain Dietmar Present.

By these means I send you a report of the current situation that we are experiencing in Acapulco Guerrero: After the passage of Hurricane Otis, the Port of Acapulco is in total abandonment by the municipal government authorities, which is why we have certain shortcomings such as the docks of the Acapulco marina and Yacht Club closed and destroyed, the reconstruction of the marina is very slow therefore sailors or sea workers do not have work. The mooring ballss are mostly found in their places of origin, almost all of them survived the hurricane. The marina area is guarded by the national guard and the marina therefore is very well maintained and safe. The entire population does not yet have water and electricity, but gasoline and diesel are already available throughout the city for the service of those who request it. The port captain’s office is already working its normal schedules and continues to search for the 55 missing people (captains and sailors). Currently what we need most is to repair our homes, household items such as beds, refrigerators, etc. Since most of us lost our homes. For example, at this moment I am staying with a neighbor because my home was taken away by the hurricane. I say goodbye to you, remaining at his command, Greetings.

Sincerely Acapulco Guerrero on November 30, 2023 Captain Inocente Herrera Carrillo Telephone: 7444398184

COSTALEGRE

16) GOOD NAUTICAL:

COSTALEGRE: THE HAPPY COAST

GOOD NAUTICAL

Costalegre translates to the Happy Coast.  The 135 nm stretch of coast in Mexico known by this name runs from Cabo Corrientes (the southern limit of Banderas Bay) to Manzanillo.  There are 20+  wonderful anchorages along this stretch of coast that make it a fabulous place to cruise.  As always, choose your own adventure and take your time to enjoy the most Happiness you can along the Happy Coast. Of course the Panama Posse started in Barra de Navidad and we hope to see you at the kick off event staring Dec 7 - and don't forget to bring your  expired flares...

Good Nautical Costalegre

With over 30 anchorages the Costalegre is the Panama Posse playground. The water is usually warm and pleasant with gentle dinghy beach landings, Some of these remote anchorages are solitary with the exception of Tenecatitia which at the height of the cruising season will have up to 50 yachts at anchor.
