PORT GUIDE

PORT ANTONIO JAMAICA

PORT ANTONIO 🇯🇲 JAMAICA PORT GUIDE

By S/V Kyrie

December 2022

Customs:

-Tie up to the dock at Errol Flynn Marina 18° 10.825'N 076° 27.215'W
and the marina will arrange for customs to come down to you to check in.

-Checking in and out is free, unless you want to go to other Jamaican ports.

-A cruising permit to go to other ports in Jamaica (optional) will cost you $150usd for 3 months.

-Dogs are allowed in the country, but will very likely not be able to step foot off the boat the entire time you’re in Jamaica, even if you’ve had a rabies titer done. (Strict quarantine rules)

ERROL FLYNN MARINA

Marina:

Errol Flynn Marina is the only choice in Port Antonio. There are a limited number of deep water slips (30-40’) available. When not busy they allow you to side tie to the main face of the dock. I understand when it gets busy it can be med-moor only at the face dock.

-Fees are as follows (with Posse discount as of 12/2022 – prices in USD)

-Moorage $0.70 USD per foot per night. Large cats are 1.5x this rate.

-Mandatory garbage charge of $3 per day

-Water (potable) is $0.25/gallon

-Power (15, 30, and 50a available at most slips) is $0.85 / KWH

-Anchoring $25/day for two people, $2 for each additional person on the boat, plus $3 for garbage. It very well might be cheaper to dock – it was for us. You can anchor for free in the bay in front of the town, but it is rolly, has no dinghy dock; and the bottom is largely filled with sea grass, so be sure you are set well.

-On-site self-serve laundry $8 per load (2 washers and driers are available)

-There is a haul out yard with storage and a travel lift available on the property. We did not use it, so unsure as to the rates or details. I would guess the lift is a 50-75 ton unit, so can handle most mono-hulls, but only smaller cats.

-Showers and restrooms are nice with good hot water.

-On-site small pool is available for guests.

-Complimentary Wi-fi is available. Speed varies by how many people are using it, but is generally ok. Best speed is closer to the marina office.

Fuel:

-Marina has both gas and diesel. Rates as of 12/2022 are:

-Diesel $7.55 per gallon

-Gasoline $7.30 per gallon

-Propane is available in town. Ask the dock workers and they will take care of it for you for cost plus a $1000 JMD fee (about $6 usd)

Grocery:

-There are a great deal of small to mid-sized grocery stores in town. Most normal needs are available but be prepared for island pricing. We found most goods to be 30-50% more expensive than Panama. Locally grown veggies or manufactured items are the exception, and can be pretty reasonable.

-Genuine blue-mountain coffee is available all over, but is quite expensive. Around $25/pound.

-Kamal’s supermarket appeared to be among the best variety and most reasonable prices we saw.

-There is a large outdoor farmers market right outside of the marina with the normal goods available. Our preference was the indoor farmers market straight across from the cenotaph on Williams Street. The prices appeared a bit better and the vegetables were local and good quality.

-Be sure to check out the local bakeries. Both the Ginger Bulla from CC Bakery and the bread from Coronation Bakery are excellent.

PORT ANTONIO JAMAICA WATERFRONT

WATERFRONT PORT ANTONIO 🇯🇲 JAMAICA

Restaurants:

-Our budget only allowed the less expensive options, but the Jerk Chicken at Piggy’s is amazing (take out only and $800 JMD for a quarter chicken with festival bread). It is served fairly mild with an optional, amazing brown sauce at the counter to take the heat and flavor up significantly.

-The many shops selling Patties (think a Jamaican take on an empanada or Cornish pasties) are all excellent and a cheap meal out.

-There is a guy selling delicious, but very spicy jerk pork on the waterfront near the corner of Harbour Street and Manning Avenue.

-Great and very inexpensive ice cream (little over $1 per large cone) is available at a little shop near the high school, at the SW corner of Boundbrook and W. Palm Avenue. Ice cream shops in town and near the marina are otherwise quite a bit more expensive.

-Other cruisers reported good experiences from both Roots 21 and 658 Plates, which are sit-down restaurants.

Half Moon Caye Natural Monument was the first marine protected area established in Central America and is part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System World Heritage Site

Blue Lagoon in Port Antonio 🇯🇲 Jamaica

Activities:

-Again our budget limited us, but the Blue Lagoon is only a few miles down the road, and the bamboo rafting down the Rio Grande river is supposed to be a lot of fun.

-Local car rentals were around $50-75 USD per day with a 2 day minimum. There is at least one car rental place (Auhsoj car rental) within walking distance of the marina.

-The free self-guided walking tour of the town is certainly worth doing, and is about 2 miles each way if you walk all the way out to the lighthouse. The Folly ruins are a really neat place for some urban exploration along the tour. https://www.visitjamaica.com/listing/port-antonio-walking-tour/466/

General Area Information:

-Kingston is approximately a 1.5-2 hour drive away. A taxi, bus, or rental car can all get you there.

-The nearest international airports are either in Kingston or Montego Bay for flying in or out crew.

Chandleries:

-None in Port Antonio that we found. There are good hardware stores, and a number of auto part stores that might be able to help with basic needs

4) REVISITING MBTILES FOR OPENCPN

https://currents.bluewatercruising.org/articles/revisiting-mbtiles-for-opencpn/

by Rob Murray published @ https://currents.bluewatercruising.org/

Back in January 2020, I wrote an article on making MBTiles for use in OpenCPN or other navigation programs. An MBTiles file is a tile-based geographic map; its format allows users to save detailed collections of geo-spatial information as a single map. MBTiles still seem to represent the best way to get satellite images into a GPS-aware chart program, and show any chart offset(s), additional features, and generally get more detail in poorly charted areas in the world. The advice here was written in October 2022, but of course the data sources may change at any time so your mileage may vary.

Since 2020, additional data sources have become available; OpenCPN has changed, and I have learned a bit more that cruisers may find helpful. Thus, I thought I would take a few minutes to share an update of what I’ve learned lately.

Data Sources: it’s who you know (about)

Back a few years, only Google and Bing offered accessible data to download to make MBTiles. Now there are a few more interesting new sources:

ArcGIS

ArcGIS is a family of client, server and online geographic information system (GIS) software and associated data sources developed and maintained by Esri (Environmental Systems Research Institute). Esri is an international supplier of GIS software, web GIS and geo-database management applications and associated data. The image sets available through this data set are less ‘massaged’ than either Bing or Google, and that can be a very good thing.

Bing and Google massage their images to make them pretty and often clip a lot of the image out, replacing actual satellite images of the foreshore and ocean with ersatz ocean views, which contain no real data or value for the navigator. The Esri/ArcGIS images seem to be ‘rawer’ and sometimes that’s a good thing.

Navionics and Navionics SonarChart™

Navionics and Navionics SonarChart™ charts are now available. Of course, you don’t get the data (user notes, light characteristics, etc.) that a real subscription gives you, but you can see what are, in effect, raster versions of their vector charts. Details seem to cap out at around zoom level 16.

C-Map

Various C-Map charts are available. As in Navionics above, it’s just a raster version of a vector chart. Details seem to cap out at about zoom level 16. To gain access, you need to unzip the C-Map_V2.zip file found here into the SASPlanet\Maps folder to add C-Map functionality.

Combining and Comparing Sources

When using cartography based sources to make MBTiles, switch off the ‘Layers-Google-Hybrid’ for making the MBTiles so you don’t get double labeling on geographic features like islands. While the labeling can be useful in satellite image MBTiles, it’s just irritating in most cartography-derived images.

These sources may (probably will) change their access over time, so you may need to update SASPlanet to maintain access. The owners of the data may cut off access, or restrict your ability to download huge amounts of images (throttling) at any time as well.

To see what you might get from these sources, let’s have a look at Pedro Bank (or Petro Bank) south of Jamaica at about 17°00N, 077°48W in the Caribbean. It has an area of a depth to 40 metres (130 feet) in a triangular shape, 70 kilometres (43 miles) long east-west, and 43 kilometres (27 miles) wide. Of that, 2,400 square kilometres (927 square miles) are less than 20 metres (66 feet) deep. It’s pretty big and has four permanent islands and a few more rocks that break the surface. Cruisers want to avoid it, yet know where the edges are. Knowing where it’s sand and where it’s rock would be very useful.

Here’s how a few of the data sources represent it.

Google Satellite shows nothing:

google nothing

Bing satellite shows two of the four permanent islands (the little white dots on the right):

Bing satellite shows two of the four permanent islands (the little white dots on the right):

The ESRI ArcGIS imagery shows the bank, indicates depths visually, shows all islands and rocks, and is generally very useful. But these images are at zoom level 12, and disappear at higher zooms, so any images you captured for MBTiles would need to use these lower zoom levels:

C-Map offers a similar view to Navionics (not surprising considering they would be based on the same cartography provider):

C-Map offers a similar view to Navionics (not surprising considering they would be based on the same cartography provider):

It’s always worth having a look at multiple sources. Some may not offer as a clear a view (or a view at all) of the ocean floor as others.

Time Marches On (but not at the same pace for all sources)

Some sources are newer than others. For example, they have extended the western breakwater in Ensenada, Mexico. But not every source seems to know this, as you can see below.

Google satellite shows the shorter old breakwater:

Bing shows the new extension:

C-Map doesn’t have the new construction:

Navionics does show it:

Frequency of updates matters! The schedule of updates differs for different providers, so check on who has what available.

Close Enough, But No Closer

Sometimes, image providers use images from different satellite passes for different zoom levels. Different passes may be made at different stages of the tide, with a different angle of the sun, or with clouds blocking the view. While I usually like zoom level 18 for detail, sometimes lower magnifications provide a better view or more detail (zoom level is shown on the vertical slider on the left hand side and in the lower left corner of the screen):

At level 17, you get a pretty good view of Benao Anchorage near Punta Mala in Panama on Google Satellite:

Playa Benao

Zooming in to level 18, Google uses a different satellite image that shows no bottom detail at all, lost in the reflection of the sun on the water:

Bad Image Google earth

Bing is almost as good as Google at Zoom level 17:

zoom in bing

But Bing loses detail to clouds and their shadows at Level 18:

Bing Clouds

The current practice among many providers seems to be to occasionally use different satellite passes and images for odd and even zoom levels, so it’s always worth a look to see what you’ll get before you download and create your MBTiles. In some cases, a lower zoom may provide more useful detail.

OpenCPN Has Changed Too

OpenCPN now supports zoom levels up to 20 (previously just up to 18), but still suffers lag when indexing very large MBTiles for display. Keeping your files smaller with lower zoom levels and/or smaller coverage areas will give you better performance (less lag) when using them. Doing 100-200 miles of coast, or about 250,000-500,000 tiles or less per MBTiles chart seems to give good display performance on my PCs, but yours may be different, so test a few before you go wild making a ton of charts.

Check Before You Make

It’s always worth a look around to find out what’s new in the neighborhood before an MBTiles chart-making session. Make sure you have an up-to-date version of SASPlanet and OpenCPN, and have a browse in the Maps tab to see what’s new and what suits your need before committing the time to download images and make your MBTiles. Sources change and using the right ones can make a huge difference in the result. Like so many things in the cruising life, curiosity and flexibility are often rewarded in this endeavor.

Nominating ourselves for a Captain Ron award for not clearing into Mexico in Ensenada and clearing in at Cabo without an agent (because they wanted $800 USD-not including other port fees etc). Took 2 days of running around, lots of waiting in lines, creating documents in word, tons of frustration and even a blood draw for health certificate. Cabo may have taken our blood but they won’t take our joy! Looking forward to seeing both old and new faces in Barra soon!

 REPORTING LONG LINES ENCOUNTERS

LONGLINES

Unmarked nets and unlit long lines are a mayor concern to the unencumbered freedom of navigation and catch seat turtles and other endangered species - in an effort to identify areas of concern we are publishing recent and historic sightings of long lines and hope to shed light to these obstacles - to view these past locations or to report long line visit https://panamaposse.com/longlines

LONGLINES

Mexico has close to 100,000 pangas in operation so night time identification of deployed fishing gear is essential. Black flags while visible during daytime and in white capping conditions are not visible at night

For Mexico - the Fisheries Law (Ley de Pesca) (1992, as amended in 2001) and the Regulation to the Fisheries Law (Reglamento de la Ley de Pesca) (1999, as amended in 2004) are the main legislative documents governing the conservation, preservation, exploitation and management of all aquatic flora and fauna. The Fisheries Law has been amended in 2001 and the Regulation has been amended in 2004. In addition, various Official Mexican Standards (Normas Oficiales Mexicanas, NOMs) facilitate the implementation of the Fisheries Law by detailing requirements as to the conduct of activities within and development of fisheries and aquaculture.

Turtle caught in Longline

The US based Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council initiated a six-month emergency rule prohibiting longline fishing gear in waters where sea turtles forage. According to recent government data, nearly 1,000 sea turtles were caught by bottom longlines In the U.S. every species of sea turtle in the United States is threatened or endangered by extinction.

24 ) TIME TO RELEASE THE BABY TURTLES

HELP

The average stay in the turtle nest is 50 days for a typical egg after which they hatch, then a little creature appears and a mad rush to the sea begins as they attempt to avoid a range of predators lying in wait.

Dusk is usually the best moment for turtles hatching but it can also happen during the day.

There are several turtle species in Mexico

  •  Olive Ridley: go to Escobilla for ‘arribada’, a mass nesting event where an army of little Olive Ridleys make their dash for the beach all at once.
  •  Leatherback: these huge beasts are a wonder to behold and can be found in Oaxaca and Michoacan.
  • Loggerhead: Along the Yucatan Peninsula
  •  Green Turtle: also known in the Pacific (perhaps confusingly) as the black turtle,
  • Hawksbill: stay in the Yucatan and look for this species amongst the coral reefs.

🇧🇿 BELIZE

Belize is a nation on the eastern coast of Central America, with a relativly small population of just 400,00 people with the Caribbean Sea shorelines to the east and dense jungle to the west. Offshore, the massive Belize Barrier Reef, dotted with hundreds of low-lying islands called cayes, hosts rich marine life. Belize’s jungle areas are home to Mayan ruins like Caracol, renowned for its towering pyramid; lagoon-side Lamanai; and Altun Ha, just outside Belize City. English is the official language of Belize, but most of the population also speaks a creole patois. Yucatec, Mopán, and Kekchí are spoken by the Maya in Belize.

"The National Authority for Government Innovation (AIG) celebrates the progress of the 100% Digital Coverage program focused on the expansion of connectivity coverage in rural and difficult-to-access areas with the approval of the license application to the company Space Exploration Technologies Corp. through your Starlink system.

The application for the license to the Starlink company, approved by the National Public Services Authority, allows Elon Musk's company to start operating in Panama, which brings the execution of the connectivity project closer through satellite Internet in schools in hard-to-reach areas.

“We are committed to ensuring that all the inhabitants of the country can take advantage of the benefits of connectivity. In the first phases, we seek to reinforce the digital infrastructure of 1,000 schools located in areas of difficult access, through satellite internet, with the collaboration of the company Space Exploration Technologies Corp. through its Starlink system," said Luis Oliva, general administrator of the A.I.G.

"This system will allow communities access to Internet service without having to wait for a fiber optic cable or other technology to be brought to them, they simply have to have a device," added the general administrator of AIG.

anchorages

Every year the particpans during the Kick Off week - fire off expired flares at the Panama Posse Red Flare excercise event.
Based on 3 years of doing this expired Flares have a 50/50% chance of working properly and larger SOLAS flares ( parachute and high projectile ) can completly miss their trajectory hit the water submerge and even head off in a 90 degree angles 💫 - they are almost dangerous !
💥 I CAN NOT RELY ON EXPIRED FLARES TO WORK PROPERLY 💥

Handgun Flares

For the Panama Posse route my handgun flares have a very limited range and are best used near busy coastal areas but with it's short lifespan and short trajectory not all that useful.

Categories 0 and 1 – offshore boats that sail and race offshore for extended periods: 6 SOLAS red parachute flares 4 SOLAS red handheld flares 2 SOLAS orange smoke signals.

High altitude Parachute Red Rocket Flares project a red flare on parachute at 300m (1000f) Burns for 40 seconds at 30,000 candela and is veryeffective - if you want to be found bring a lot of them - we even have a green laserpointer onboard to be found.

Actun Tunichil Muknal 🇧🇿 BELIZE

Actun Tunichil Muknal (the Cave of the Crystal Sepulchre), known as "ATM"  is a cave in Belize, near San Ignacio and a Maya archaeological site that includes skeletons, ceramics, and stoneware.

A series of upper prehistoric passages continues another mile past the sump through massive breakdown boulders and giant rooms. The cave can be exited through a tight squeeze ending in a giant sink hole collapse in the jungle.

"The Crystal Maiden" a skeleton of a 17-year-old boy possibly a sacrifice victim, whose bones have been calcified to a sparkling, crystallized appearance.

The ceramics at the site are significant partly because they are marked with "kill holes" (holes created to release spirits lurking within),  which indicate that they were used for ceremonial purposes. Many of the Maya artifacts and remains are completely calcified to the cave floor. One artifact, named the "Monkey Pot", is one of just four of its type found in Central America.

Actun Tunichil Muknal wiki
The Maya also modified cave formations here, in some instances to create altars for the offerings, in others to create silhouettes of faces and animals or to project a shadow image into the cave. The cave is extensively decorated with cave formations in the upper passages.

cave formations ATM

Animal life in the cave includes a large population of bats, large freshwater crabs, crayfish, catfish and other tropical fish. Large invertebrates like amblypygi and various predatory spiders also inhabit the cave. Agouti and otters may also use the cave.

cave formations ATM
These and many other species are quite common in river caves of this size in Belize.

The Belize Tourism Board, in coordination with the Belize National Institute of Culture and History, Institute of Archaeology, has granted licenses to a small group of agents to conduct tours to this cave, in an attempt to balance its protection against tourist revenue.

2) DANGER ⚠️ SOUTH COAST
🇩🇴 DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

IMPORTANT CAUTION
IF CRUISING THE SOUTHERN COAST OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Soulmate is a 63’ motor yacht and we are OK.

Soulmate was having a bumpy, but good cruise from Port Antonio, Jamaica bound for Boca Chica DR. Just after we rounded Cabo Beata and turned north Sunday afternoon, both propellers became fouled in a massive bunch of fishing lines and we were dead in the water with 6-8’ waves at 4-5 seconds.

We issued a MAYDAY call and thankfully a 350’ container ship responded and turned around from about 10 miles out and came to our rescue.

Even in daylight the rescue was tricky and dangerous in the conditions. They managed to get a line to us, but we collided during rescue and Soulmate suffered some cosmetic damage along her starboard side.

They towed us through the night in rough seas to the port of Rio Haina. Once there, a pilot boat towed us to a commercial mooring and quickly returned with a scuba diver. He removed a trash bag full of ropes and lines from the props and we got underway to Boca Chica.

If you are rounding Cabo Beata stay in deep water, which will put you off shore at least two+ miles to avoid fishing lines. We had dodged several and we’re headed to deeper water when we got entangled about 1.5 miles SE of the cape.

We have incredible appreciation for the captain and crew of the Polynesia and will be forever grateful. The Port Authority at Rio Haina offered to bring us food and water if needed and were extremely kind and helpful as well .

Bahia del Sol Bar Report

Compiled by La Palma Moorings.

  • Entry is only permitted at high tide during daylight hours.
  • Daylight hours include civil twilight (about 40 minutes before sunrise or 40 minutes after sunset).
  • Morning tides are always better due to the absence of wind waves.

Forecast:

We
are nearing the end of a spring tide phase.  Tides for the week
are early to mid-morning. Any day during the forecast period is good for
arrival or departure. Swell forecast shows the bar almost flat.

This forecast is for planning purposes only.

About the Bar

The entrance into Bahia del Sol can be intimidating but most
bars can be crossed safely with experience or proper guidance. November
through February the entrance is fairly tame, even flat but some days
can be quite exciting. During the summer months the condition of the bar
varies due to swells originating the the southern ocean.

Palenque
also anciently known as Lakamha “Big Water” , was a Maya city

decline, it was overgrown by the jungle of cedar, mahogany, and
sapodilla trees, but has since been excavated and restored with an

Palenque
is a medium-sized site, smaller than Tikal  but it contains some
of the finest architecture, sculpture, roof comb and  relief
carvings that the Mayas produced. Much of the history of Palenque has
been reconstructed from reading the hieroglyphic inscriptions on the
many monuments; historians now have a long sequence of the ruling
dynasty of Palenque in the 5th century and extensive knowledge of the
city-state’s rivalry with other states such as Calakmul and Toniná.

The rulers of Palenque were called the “Holy Lord of Toktahn” or “Holy Lord of Baakal”, and among the king list are several legendary leaders, including Snake Spine and Ch’a Ruler I. The very first named ruler of Palenque is GI, the First Father, said to have been born 3122 BCE, and the Ancestral Goddess said to have been born 3121 BCE.

BOCAS DEL TORO 🇵🇦 PANAMA

water shortages in bocas

No water in Bocas del Toro; a state of emergency

Two of the islands most visited by nationals and foreigners in the province of Bocas del Toro: Isla Colón and Isla Carenero, have been without drinking water for several days, which has affected residents, tourists and businesses.

According to the authorities, everything is due to the significant decrease in rainfall that has caused the water levels of Big Creek Lake, which supplies drinking water to the population, to be in critical condition.

The panorama has been so worrying that the Cabinet Council declared a State of Environmental Emergency in both islands of the province "to promote actions that allow mitigating the effects generated by low rainfall in this area of the country."

The declaration of a State of Environmental Emergency authorizes the Institute of National Aqueducts and Sewers (Idaan) to carry out, through the special procurement process, the contracting and acquisition of goods, works and services that are required to mitigate the effects of the current situation on these islands.

In fact, the Institute of National Aqueducts and Sewers (Idaan) announced that it has launched a contingency plan for the supply of drinking water through tanker trucks.

OVERHEARD:

"Ok, I need help. I ordered 12 volt light bulbs for my navigation lights. They are BAY15D, which defines as bayonet with offset tabs 15mm and dual contacts. But it can't be a dual function. What came was something like tail light/brake light where the base is the ground (-) and the dual contacts are two separate circuits (+).

I need to define my search criteria for same bulb with base not part of circuit and the dual contacts are + and -.

Anyone know the nomenclature for that distinction?

Thanks for the help "

5) FORESHADOWING
 SEA SHANTIES

A
sea shanty, chantey, or chanty  is a genre of traditional folk
song that was once commonly sung as a work song to accompany rhythmical
labor aboard large sailing vessels. The term shanty most accurately
refers to a specific style of work song belonging to this historical
repertoire.

 Shanty
songs functioned to synchronize and thereby optimize labor, in what had
then become larger vessels having smaller crews and operating on
stricter schedules.  The practice of singing shanties eventually
became ubiquitous internationally and throughout the era of wind-driven
packet and clipper ships.

Sea Shanty

The
night of the red cup pot luck exercises  in Barra de Navidad we
will sing a few of these with the help of Esteban Lomelin Torres

courtesy of Safe Esteem

One if (traveling ) by Land ...

  • If
you rent a car be certain to remove the Rental Car frame around the
license plate to avoid corrupt local officials from stopping you
over others and thieves which look for rental cars to break into.
  • Park close to the entrance of the supermarket where there is a lot of foot traffic
  • LOCK YOUR CAR  and if you can keep an eye on your car.
  • With
taxis always per-negotiate the total fee in the local currency. Use
Uber/Lyft if available. Have the Marina call a known taxi operator. Do
not hail a taxi on the street.
  • Ask for the drivers name and text the license plate to yourself or your buddy boat.
  • Carry ID (copy of passport) with you at all times.
  •  If you get stopped by  traffic police ask for the ticket !
  •  Do not pay a bribe. YOU are training them !
  •  Corrupt
cops will do everything possible to delay you in order to get their
bribe – so tell them you are not in a hurry and  plan on staying
months in the area with a local gringo. DO not tell them that you are
trying to catch a flight or late for it – stay calm and act with no
    worry and no hurry.
  • Simply keep asking for the ticket – do not pay anything on the spot.
  • If
they ask for your passport let them know that it is with the Marina
Office and that you request their official ID for verification and to
please call the Marina office. Show them your photocopy.
  • Always
Write down the official’s name, station, telephone number and address
of the station and location –(have the official write it down for you so
    you have proof)
  • If
you are on the road or walking in a busy area and you think / feel, you
are being followed make 3 left turns – if the car or person is still
behind you – you are not paranoid- you are being followed !
  •  Make
your way as quickly as possible to a 4 or 5 star resort – think
Marriott, Sheraton, Hilton and got to the front desk and ask to speak
with the chief security officer and inform them of you being followed.
  • Do not visit the capitals, presidential palaces or universities – especially  when there are protests planned.
  • When
going through locations with security (e.g. transportation, large
events), it is safest to move through security versus
remaining outside a    venue or remain in public areas.
  •  Where
    possible, use public transportation at off-peak times and be efficient;
do not linger in terminals or boarding areas longer than
    necessary.
  •  If
someone tell you that you have some stain or liquid on your shirt turn
away from them immediately  – they are pick pocketing you  –
go towards a wall and face outward fending of anyone coming near you.

13) CASCO VIEJO 🇵🇦  PANAMA

Casco Viejo

The quaint and historic streets in Casco Viejo Old Quarter), also known as Casco Antiguo or San Felipe, is the

historic district of Panama City. Completed and settled in 1673, it was

built following the near-total destruction of the original Panamá city

by Governor Juan Perez de Guzman who had it set on fire, before the

attack and looting by the pirate and fellow seafarer Henry Morgan.

The champagne of coffees

There’s coffee and then there’s Geisha coffee, Panama’s prized brew that’s one

of the world’s best – and most expensive – cups of joe. Originally

brought over from Ethiopia, local growers found that Geisha coffee beans

thrived in Panama’s climate.  In Casco, sip the champagne of

coffees at Café Unido located within

The American Trade Hotel at Plaza

Herrera.

1) DAY OF THE DEAD

Day of the Dead

..
is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, in particular the
Central and South regions, and by people of Mexican heritage elsewhere.
The multi-day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pray for
and remember friends and family members who have died, and helping
support their spiritual journey. In Mexican culture, death is viewed as a
natural part of the human cycle. Mexicans view it not as a day of
sadness but as a day of celebration because their loved ones awake and
celebrate with them

Traditions connected with the holiday include
building private altars called ofrendas, honoring the deceased using
calaveras, aztec marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the
departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts. Visitors also leave
possessions of the deceased at the graves. Scholars trace the origins of
the modern Mexican holiday to indigenous observances dating back
hundreds of years and to an Aztec festival dedicated to the goddess
Mictecacihuatl. It has become a national symbol and as such is taught
(for educational purposes) in the nation’s schools.

MIcatlan

MICTLÁN

According
to the Great Nahuatl Dictionary, Mictlán means underworld, others
translate it as “place of the dead.” Different legends, visual
representations and ancient codices define Mictlán as an unknown,
dangerous and dark place, which has nine levels.

DIVE INTO MYTHOLOGY

In the Mexica worldview, the Earth was considered a being that devoured the flesh of the deceased. At the time of death, the Mexica thought that they were paying off their debt
with the Earth, since when they died, they gave continuity to the cycle
of the universe. These nine levels are related to rot, fetid, cold,
damp, watery, darkness, and night. The animals related to the Mictlán
were owls, bats, worms and centipedes, which were in the service of
Mictlantecuhtli and his consort Mictecacíhuatl.

Day of the Dead is a tradition that has been going on for more than 3,000 years. It's a Mexican celebration of the deceased that begins on October 31 and lasts until November 2.

15) SIAN KAʼAN BIOSPHERE 🇲🇽 MEXICO
"WHERE THE SKY IS BORN”

Sian Kaʼan Biosphere

In
the Mayan language SIAN KAʼAN  it means “Where the sky is born”.
This is the name of the Biosphere Reserve that is located in the south –
east of the Yucatan Peninsula, which was declared by UNESCO in 1987
“Natural Heritage of Humanity”. The Reserve occupies an area of 528
thousand 147 hectares, where they are home to hundreds of different
species of flora and fauna. Some species are in danger of extinction,
therefore the Reserve is a protected area.

Sian Kaʼan Biosphere

How to get to Sian Kaʼan Biosphere ?

A
dirt road starts from Tulum that, following the coastline, reaches
Punta Allen. The path allows you to appreciate a wonderful landscape as
well as flora and fauna. Punta Allen is a small fishing village whose
boatmen cooperative offers various tours of the Reserve.

Where the sky is born”.

In Punta Allen there is a restaurant on the beach that serves snacks and refreshing drinks as well as sea dishes.

Boat
tours through the Biosphere enter the mangroves, which are home to an
enormous biological diversity, both birds and fish, crustaceans,
mollusks, etc. The tangled channels of the mangrove lead us first to the
Laguna Negra; with a lush tropical ecosystem; to finally flow into the
Caribbean Sea. The sea is turquoise blue and as it is a protected area
you will find species in the wild such as starfish, turtles and dolphins
that can be appreciated during the boat ride.

Biosphere-Reserve

The
Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is also home to part of the second largest
coral reef in the world. Helped with your snorkel, visor and fins you
can appreciate the corals, coral fish, manta rays and barracudas.

Five
minutes by boat from the reefs are real natural pools, the Blanquizal,
where you can relax in the crystalline and shallow waters of the
Caribbean Sea, surrounded by an enchanting natural landscape.

17)  CLIMATOLOGY

Every
Maritime area  of the earth has Pilot Charts aka wind roses and
all of them are available for each calendar  month on the panama
posse website - example below at https://panamaposse.com/nicaragua

WINDROSES

THE IDES OF MARCH PAPAGAYO WINDS

Wind
roses are located in the center of each 5° square on the surface of the
Earth on the oceans pilot charts and are published for each month. We
have chopped these pilot charts to digestible portions into each Maritime Area. This exert above represents March for Nicaragua Pacific Coast. aka the Papagayo Wind Area.

Each
rose shows the distribution of the winds that have prevailed in the
area over a considerable period of time – think decades.

Wind
percentages are summarized for calm (center) and for the Cardinal and
Inter cardinal compass points. The arrows fly with the wind, indicating
the direction from which the wind blew. |

The
length of the shaft, measured from the outside of the circle to the end
of the visible shaft (not necessarily to the end of the last feather),
using the appropriate scale below, gives the percentage of the total
number of observations in which the wind has blown from that direction.

The
number of feathers shows the average force of the wind on the Beaufort
scale. The figure in the center of the circle gives the percentage of
calms. When the arrow is too long (over29 percent) to fit conveniently
in the 5° square, the percentage is indicated numerically on the shaft.

WINDROSE

WINDROSE

EXAMPLE ABOVE
In this wind rose reported observations the wind has averaged as follows:

N 32 percent, Beaufort force 5

NE 11 percent, Beaufort force 4

E 8 percent, Beaufort force 4

SE 4 percent, Beaufort force 4

S 3 percent, Beaufort force 4

SW 5 percent,Beaufort force 4

W10 percent, Beaufort force 4

NW 25 percent, Beaufort force 4
