aka
BARREL OF HOPE

GOOD MESSAGES INSIDE A BARREL

The Barrel

Vessels will choose their own colors and write a message of good hope on water proof paper to be carried inside the barrel along the coast and through the canal

Make your mark of good wishes and marks of positivity

 SEARCHING SUSTAINABILITY

A BARREL SEARCHING FOR SUSTAINABILITY

The Panama Posse Barrel is
a collective baton to identify ways in which we can understand local
needs and those living on the edge of the oceans we journey along.

It is a symbol of hope to define new standards of coastal sustainability and survival.

Every vessel in the Panama Posse fleet can sign the barrel and fill it with it’s own message of goodness and hope and positivity.
May it serve as collection of the can-do spirit of survival and create a new way to engage in global philanthropy.

By
the end of this season we hope to have met and spoken with many
stakeholders, at risk coastal communities and present the barrel to the
leaders of the Guna |  Kuna people in hopes of aiding their actual
physical /security needs and work towards a long term sustainable
solution for those living in coastal impact zones.

First we seek to understand actual issues of near shore environments.

Follow the voyage of the barrel as it it passed from one Panama Posse Vessel to another, down the Pacific Coast and through the Panama Canal.

3) EVERY SEASON STARTS WITH
THE ROAR OF THE HOWLER MONKEY

Watch
this video to hear the loudest mammal above ground roar at it – these
howler monkeys are our spokesperson for a reason – you can hear them 3
nm through then densest of jungles. Howlers are stoutly built bearded
monkeys with a hunched appearance and thickly furred tails that are
naked on the underside of the tip to afford a better grip. The hair is
long and dense and, depending on species, is typically black, brown, or
red.

Habitat

Endemic
to the southern tip of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras,
Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia – the howler monkey is an
endangered species but shall not go quietly into the night !

WE DO NOT GO QUIETLY INTO THE NIGHT

4) THIS SUNDAY OCT 23
INDEPTH
OPENCPN SEMINAR

Please follow this link to access the seminar this Sunday at 10:30 AM PST *

opencpn

* For registered participants of the 22-23 Panama Posse

OpenCPN
is an incredibly useful, tried and true, aid to navigation for mariners
worldwide. Even those that don’t use it as a primary software for
navigation have it loaded on a computer for use in route planning,
research and exchanging information.

It’s free to install and use and can provide a safe passage for your vessel in poorly charted areas.

In
2010 Paul Higgins developed GE2KAP  with *.KAP files which
are a basic file format of nautical charts. This was a big
revelation as suddenly, you can see that charts were offset compared to
Google Earth Pro. Plus it openly displayed uncharted hazards, and rocks
or obstacles not contained on even the most detailed and often expensive
nautical charts.

The majority of near coastal areas are POORLY CHARTED

Once
the  *.mbtiles  format was supported as of OpenCPN (v 5.0+)
in  2019, it allowed for larger zoom-able charts with additional
color depths. This is the single most helpful aid to navigation onboard a
vessel as it integrates with your vessels GPS.

The program runs on PC / MAC and Android Phones / Raspberry Pi  and Android Tablets.

NOTE: It does not work on Ipads or IOS.

Watch this use case video below in avoiding bommies in French Polynesia and see OpenCPN in action

10) BEFORE YOU HEAD SOUTH
PAPERWORK CONSIDERATIONS

panama
  • INSURANCE Here are some  resources including agencies outside of the US who may insure your vessel – do not expect miracles>>
  • VESSEL DOCUMENTATION
    • In general named vessel owners on official documents matching is the easiest way to enter and exit countries
    • LLC or Corporate ownership of vessels – please be sure to have ample documentation to proof ownership / plus authority to operate
    • Vessel documented under a trust generally
are the most difficult to enter and exit countries – be prepared for
significant delays and difficulties with authorities – some countries
may not allow you in with vessels in a trust
  • PASSPORTS AND DRIVERS LICENSES
    – ensure that you have at least 9+ months before expiration of to avoid
delays and issues upon entry and exit with immigration. Always check
your passport on exit of countries to ensure you have a valid exit
stamp. Panama Immigration in particular has been known to use this as a
wedge issue and make re-entry difficult.
  • ATM / CREDIT CARDS
    – I bring a spare ATM with a dual account  linked so in case I
loose a card I can simply transfer funds to the secondary account
    and continue on
  • MOBILE PHONE PLANS –
sooner or later AT&T / T Mobile & Google Fi will cut me off – a
good workaround is to secure a permanent Google Voice number ( $ 25
onetime fee ) and have an unlocked dual sim android phone which allows
me to create hot spots and use local sim cards to access data and tether
    – the google voice # phone will still ring and deliver SMS as long as
you are connected via IP / WIFI
  • HEALTH INSURANCE –
outside the US healthcare is very affordable so I  can pay as you
go or contact this company for a reasonable overseas insurance
    plan

    https://www.tripinsuranceconsultants.com/panamaposse
  • MEDICATIONS – same
as above but I bring the script  for restricted substances – I do
not bring illegal drugs across any border  – for a list of
recommended drugs to have onboard and it’s uses  – which I can
purchase in Central America to build up our medical kit
    follow this link >>
  • PROOF OF VACCINATION – as the policies in countries continue to change I bring my vaccination cards with  to have proof of vaccination
  • PETS VACCINATION INTL CHIPS  PROOF OF VACCINATION
we keep them up to date and upon exit from one country we may need to
get an intl. health certificate from a local vet – we will create this
list but know that these requirements are different for each country and
update often – based on where you come from and which mode of travel (
    air / yacht / car / walking )
